Alec ( Expensive Looks ) has sent over a few high risers before but nothing as cosmic as his latest, "Living Scene". Coupled with star shooting phazers and explosive crashes, there's a serious back road night ride aesthetic. One where light pollution is non existent and the entire universe can be seen. Think I might have mentioned their upcoming release on Mirror Universe Tapes (if so, here it is again), so pop this thing in yr deck and roll down the sunroof. "LEGIT". Expensive Looks - Living Scene
Here's what's going on in Chicago this week. As always, my picks are in bold . The obvious highlight of the week is the Tomorrow Never Knows festival taking place at Schubas and Lincoln Hall, and, in turn, the highlight of the festival - for me, at least - is getting to see The Rural Alberta Advantage for the first time since last April. If you haven't seen them yet, or even if you have, you really need to go to this show. Aside from the RAA, I also [...]

Someone is counting down their 10 favorite underrated albums of the past decade and included Swimming by my darling French Kicks. Here's a short playlist from some of the other picks. (thank you to Satin in A Coffin for the inspiration.) I've looked a couple of different places and can't find what the Kicks are up to lately. They did a video starring Olivia Wilde ; girlfraynd is *everywhere* I look this [...]

We used to go to Mayo to visit granny four or five times in the year. That was some long journey from Kells, cooped up in the back of a Nissan Bluebird with my brother and sister, watching half-lit midlands towns streak past the window at forty miles per hour (this was the speed at which my Dad drove) while something maudlin warbled on the radio - "I wonder if it's raining back home in Donegal". We used to fight in the back of the car too. Terribly. I remember elbowing my sister's nose near Strokestown once and the blood [...]
After having Manicorn on repeat for a week, my pity party of an existence is all right, because I'm young, moody, and yearn for that new shit. Listening to Manicorn is like putting on a Cheetah Girl suit and some busted Chucks, then plopping onto a body rocket and aimlessly jetting through a big city beneath thousands of crisp constellations too powerful to be affected by light pollution.

We were turned on to Chicago's Light Pollution a few months back and have been keeping a close eye since. The band has sent us quite a few new songs recently, but here are two of my favorites. Welcome to the new, not-really-improved BabyStew This Week In Chicago listing. What's new about it, you ask? Absolutely nothing, except that it now covers the week from Monday through Sunday rather than Sunday through Saturday. It always seemed weird to me not to be listing Sunday shows until the morning of – when not many people are reading blogs – for the sole purpose of sticking with the conventional definition of "week" ( i.e. , Sun-Sat). But convention be damned. So here's what's going on in Chicago this "week". [...]
Relatively slow week coming up in Chicago, at least in terms of shows I'm interested in seeing. The two best shows (for me, at least) are both on Thursday - Future of The Left at Bottom Lounge and The Jet Age at Beat Kitchen.* That said, I personally only need a couple of good shows this week, as I'm headed down to Austin on Friday for this year's Fun Fun Fun Fest . More on that later in the week, but for now I leave you with one word... Danzig [...]
ok, just to fill people in. 'Shoplifting from American Apparel' is a novella written by Tao Lin and published by Melville House. Tao is giving shit away to people who write 1500+ word blog posts about him and/or his book ( relevant link here ). If you live in Australia you have to write 2000+ words to cover postage from North America. Peter has let me hijack his blog for this because I told him I wanted to "win shit on the internet where you need a blog and I don't have a blog". [...]

A brief note on the logistics of this tour: Thao/PCP and David Schultz are on tour from Oct 15 – Nov 21. Beyond playing with Cello Project Thao and her band the Get Down Stay Down have been asking me to join them as their multi-instrumentalist, so there are times when this blog will kind of relate (I guess my perspective when I'm writing) events relating to both bands (including the shows Cello Project doesn't play on). "This band is like Oceans 11," said Thao the first time I played a show with her. Everyone [...]

If you read the site with any regularity, you know I'm a big science fiction fan. Particularly, I'm a big Star Trek fan. Being a well known Star Trek fan, I've often been asked by non-fans where exactly they should start. Especially after this summer's JJ Abrams reboot, which it seems EVERYONE loved. The trick with Star Trek is, there's a lot of it. It's not like Star Wars, where you basically have 6 movies to choose from (and let's face it, it isn't hard to point at the good ones). Star Trek is a 45-year [...]

Don't underestimate the power of the sun, like the ocean it has the ability to create life and to take it. Tommie Sunshine is a life-giver type and his music never fails to impress me. He is also a kind guy who shares a lot of his work on his soundcloud; so many hot remixes I don't even know where to start..so instead I'll hook you up with his ' 9 remixes for 092 [Brooklyn Fire mixtape 002] .' As you'll see/hear from the tracks Tommie doesn't limit himself to one genre and when you're ready to browse [...]
