Urthboy is a none stop hip hop Machine. Part of several groups down there and collaborating with various aussie's in the hip hop community he consistently adds variety to the hip hop world. His beats are fast and hard but he also knows how to mix it up with various loops and breaks. His 3rd solo album is out now and if you like it you should check out his earlier stuff as well. Urthboy ft. Nat Dunn - Ready to Go Urthboy ft. Lior [...]
The 23rd Aria Award Nominations were announced today. It has a lot of usual suspects in there, but thankfully there's also some new talent getting the attention they deserve. Empire of the Sun don't necessarily count as new talent since both members have been around for a while, but they've basically re-colonised the globe and I'm especially happy about their nomination since they're likely to stop AC/DC from winning any of the big awards. Also, Ladyhawke curiously made the list - curiously since she's from New Zealand. Not that she doesn't deserve the plaudits, but surely that means [...]
Like a Version is a segment on the Australian radio station Triple J. It was created by Mel Bampton as part of the Mel in the Morning program. Currently the segment pops up whenever artists are available and willing to do it, though mainly on the Breakfast show. It involves Australian, and more recently, international artists playing live, acoustic versions of some of their favourite songs. This segment's popularity has led to, so far, the release of four compilation CDs. Samples of the 4 Vol Set: Vol 1 Damien Rice - "When Doves Cry"* (Prince) [...]

"Love is like a letter wrote, and life is like an envelope. Be careful who you give it to, they might not give it back to you." As I've said before , Australian Idol is one of my guilty pleasures. I particularly enjoyed the 2006 season that saw bright eyed Matt Corby finish in second place (Natalie Gauci was the winner for Pub trivia's sake) and thus successfully avoided the horrors of releasing a rushed pop manufactured album at the hands of [...]

Someone has been reading this blog... You know that always makes me a little bit happy inside And I know this because I got a cheeky little email from an Aussie which said, "I've just got a real easy going indie band I thought you'd possibly like...some of them are kind of pretty like Better Than Ezra too (but with aussie accents)." Now darlin's, wouldn't you just fall for that? Hook Line Sinker And so I clicked [...]

Wildflower season is here. I asked my husband, "Are they still wildflowers if I planted them?" "Sure," he said, "It says so right on the package." Actually, I collect most of my seeds myself from wild sources, including these tidy tips and goldfields. Agnes at It All Started With Carbon Monoxide breaks her own rule against posting videos with an old winner by Queen. Rock misses Freddie Mercury. She has also discovered Oddee, a website devoted to things that are...odd, and the 20 Most Amazing Coincidences. Just [...]
Another pretty piece of pop music (not sure what is happening to me), this time from down Sydney way. Lior has a large following in Australia and his clean cut vocals and political views should see him make it as big over here as well. On this song from his second album 'Corner Of An Endless Road' he is joined by Sia and their vocal union is faultless. The music for its part is unobtrusive,

The latest James Bond film, Quantum of Solace , is released tomorow, along with Blu-ray editions of Goldfinger , Moonraker , and The World Is Not Enough . Other feature films in stores tomorrow include the Criterion Collection edition of Francois Truffaut's The Last Metro and Ingrid Bergman's stunning portrayal of Golda Meir, A Woman Called Golda . Bertie Blackman - 'Heart' Bertie Blackman returns with a new record and new sound. First taste we get of her new material is the upbeat Heart , and it's great to hear her accompanied by a more modern production than what she previously had on her past releases. I've always thought she had a great voice with some endearing singing styles like a minor shake in some phrasings, although in the bridge of the song she goes into a talking-singing kind of mode which I'm still trying to get used to. Her [...]

Teliof from Tel Aviv are a progressive rock band who sound like they have been locked up in a room for the last 30 years or so, listening endlessly to Yes, Genesis, early Queen, and Focus. This Israeli quintet takes you back on a trip through early seventies symphonic rock, with a 24 minute plus suite in seven parts to boot. The band have a knack for coming up with infectious melodies, with a hint of gospel thrown in. Is It? is an album with expert guitar parts, big room vocals - thankfully no [...]
