One of my favorite music blogs Wears The Trousers recently started their own record label, and their first release will be a tribute to legendary folk singer Odetta . As a great fan of Odetta's (I had the privilege of seeing her perform live at Mountain Stage ), I'm so glad that Wears The Trousers showed her due respect by selecting a talented group of contemporary female singers to carry on her grand legacy. The tribute will be released on November 30th and all profits from its sales will be split between two charities [...]

Upcoming is a concert I am making sure I am at - the Vic Chesnutt / Liz Durrett performance at the Marquee Room on November 23rd (locals, please note change in venue with Timbre Productions ). Any Calgarians looking to go, please consider confirming, it will be a great show! I have not seen either artist live and I am very excited to see them both together. They are not strangers to each other as you can see from one of the tracks below, but it should be quite an intimate show at points - this I am excited [...]
This past Tuesday, 27 October, Clare & The Reasons played the Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, a week after releasing their second album, Arrow. The gig was sandwiched between two acts from Athens, Georgia: first Liz Durrett, then Vic Chesnutt, with a band featuring members of Fugazi, godspeed you! black emperor, and Silver Mount Zion. It was pouring rain but a respectable audience turned up

After hinting at the project for months, our favorite anglocentric femme-celebrating mag/blog Wears the Trousers has finally finished mixing their upcoming tribute album Beautiful Star: The Songs of Odetta ; I'm honored to have been among the first to hear it, and after settling into it for a few go-rounds I'm also pleased to announce that it's a strong album well worth celebrating on several levels - among them its respectful approach to the Odetta songbook, its musical range and depth and beauty, and the fact that all profits will go to benefit UK women's charities. [...]

Recommended Show: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2009 THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS @ MUSIC HALL OF WILLIAMSBURG 66th North 6th Street Brooklyn, NY 11211 $25, 8PM Looking at the listing for this show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg 's website, I'm not sure exactly what time TMBG will take to the stage...or even what order the order of the bands will be. It is pretty clear that the other acts on the bill include Charles Bissell (of The Wrens) and Nada Surf. It's also pretty clear that the show is a benefit for The Northside Town [...]

Sometimes the scariest part of a movie is when it is dark and quiet. The same is true of music, and that is what these selections for my huge Halloween mix have in common. Liz Durrett's Outside Our Gates was my 3rd favorite album of 2008, and sometimes I think it should have been first. It has turned out to be the one I go back to the most. I also like her older albums, Husk and The Mezzanine . The title song from Husk starts out with: [...]

This is the second time I'm doing this kind of shorties post, and it may show that I'm better than I thought on consistency... During a week, I post a lot of news and finds on my twitter @eardrums and I get a lot of email that never gets published on the blog. I'll try to post some of it here + give you some recommendations to new releases you should buy. Let's start with some "VERY SHORTIES" and below this, you will find a lot of free goodies and music recommendations: [...]

Okay, this list is by DL, NM, and FP. The writeup on John Maus almost reminds me of something out of the old Rollerderby zine. Anyways, I'm sure I forgot something and I'm sure you'll remind me. Thanks to everyone who made my week easier, specifically, Shep and Josh at Rubber Gloves , Time Bandits , Vulgar Fashion , Kashioboy , and everyone that came out on Wednesday night. Sometimes I almost don't hate local music. (DL) PS- Time Bandits [...]
A few months back, in June, Aquarium Drunkard teamed up with Team Clermont to throw a joint champagne jam in Athens, GA during this year's Athfest. It went down at Nuci's - we booked Liz Durrett, Modern Skirts and the newly reformed Circulatory System with all donations benefiting the space. The lineup was (note inherent [...]

For the past few years, my father and I have taken a week or so at the end of the summer to travel together, just the two of us. This year, we've gone to Germany to visit my brother and his wife, artists who recently moved here to take a stab at the European art scene; I'm writing this, in fact, from outside a Frankfurt Starbucks in the midst of morning rush hour, the only place I could find a decent Internet connection, though the price is pretty dear. It's precious time lost, for a [...]

Happy Friday everyone...I have made a conscious effort this week to spend as little time on the internet as possible in order to catch up with some real life stuff. It's been nice actually. It's gonna be a long, slow work day here though...which could result in a blogging spree as I attempt to pass the time while keeping my sanity. First up is one of my favorite female songwriters, Liz Durrett. She is based out of Athens,GA and is the niece of the amazing Vic Chestnutt. Here is my favorite tune of hers off of her 2008 [...]
