We've been covering a lot of folk here on TBW recently, and for good reason. There are just so many good folkish bands appearing on the radar. One blog that if it had any theme might be a good folk leaning is that of Song, by Toad and lo and behold, Matthew's little spin off record label put out another gem in a split 123 of two delightfully different folk bands in Loch Lomond and The Builders & the Butchers ( MySpace ). I can't give him all the credit for this [...]

Raúl Pastor Medall didn't grow up in Oregon. In fact, until recently, the Spanish singer—who records under the name Rauelsson—lived full-time in his native homeland. But the sounds of the Pacific Northwest, and Hush Records in particular, are all over Rauelsson's latest, the gorgeous and very winter-y "Debutantes." Rauelsson recorded the core of his new record—everything but the vocals, really—at Type Foundry studios in the fall/winter last year with the help of friends and producers Adam Selzer and Dave Depper (Norfolk & Western), and you can hear the seasonal touch. La Siembra, la Espera y la Cosecha [...]

This edition of the Graboid is all about the unknown, as I wouldn't be surprised if you haven't heard about many of these releases (I haven't, at least). Though, there are a few notable names scattered throughout including MF Doom and Ola Podrida . There is one album that I highly recommend checking out, which is Received Pronunciation , the fourth release from Pants Yell! which also marks their debut with Slumberland Records. As always, feel free to recommend anything I may have left off! [...]

If you're shut out out of the sold-out Them Crooked Vultures show at the Wiltern tonight, there's still plenty of rock music to be consumed: There's a power-packed local bill at the Roxy, with the Outline , Voxhaul Broadcast , Eastern Conference Champions [pictured], Links and Nova Nueva ... It's a big Haden-fest at Disney Hall , where patriarch Charlie will be joined by family and friends (and special guest Jack Black) for a night of country and bluegrass music. ... Lots of pretty folk music on tap at [...]
Here's the latest of our sporadic round-ups of new and recent discoveries. We posted about the new EP from Loch Lomond recently, and they have also made a track from their new split 12" with Builders & Butchers available. It is called Field Report and is another top notch track that has been on heavy rotation here at MM. They can always be relied upon for a great lyric and they don't disappoint

Drums Play Spaceland Monday Night (and It's Free) Ray Davies put on a fantastic show on Saturday night at the Orpheum. If you get a chance to see him on this tour do not hesitate. More on that later. Another great week this week. If you're into buzz bands you might want to check out Drums tonight, The Big Pink on Wednesday, Tape Deck Mountain on Thursday, Neon Indian on Friday and The XX on Saturday. Some of those will be good, but I'm recommending a variety of [...]

Today Lee and I learned a lot about ourselves during the radio show, like how Lee's related to the late singer of Morphine, and how I'm just awesome in general. Even though we all knew that already. But anyway, this week will mark the one year birthday of Knox Road, so we made sure to put on a crazy, sexy party during the show. Or did we? I don't know, man, I guess you'll just have to listen and find out. Knox Road Radio 11.13.09 [MP3] (Available until next Sunday's show) 01| WHY? [...]

Wake up, ceiling stare, hurriedly dress and walk with the wind to work. Hear something. Stop. Gate off to the right. Press your ear to the door. Echoes, bouncing sounds. Eyes to the hole. Kids running around, innocence abound. Flowers in full bloom. Weeping trees. Afraid someone will see you watching. Realize you're late to work. Stop, breathe, ready yourself for the day. Think about joining the crowd of kids and what could have been. Wait. Gate opens. Little redhead asks if you want to play their game. You're hesitant, say no thanks, I'm all grown up. She asks why. [...]
