WE COME IN PIECE, d3NdRON Happy-Fi, Mexico Rating: 74 By Carlos Reyes Hailing out of the Happy-Fi wing comes this relatively known band, d3NdRON's electronic rock is making a lot of noise lately. Some of our friends have listed We Come in Piece as one of the year's albums, too many and too abroad [...]

T oday, I was rudely awakened. The alarm for my wake-up call was set the week before last when, on a whim, I entered a contest on the gay online-dating website Manhunt. It was a search for 12 models -- three from Argentina, three from Colombia, three from Mexico, three from Spain -- for the 2010 Manhunt calendar. I don't know why I entered. I was bored, or looking for something. Validation, maybe. I never expected anything to come of it. I entered and forgot about it. On Sunday or Monday of last week, they sent [...]
The Mexican musical duo who specialise in fast, rhythmic classical guitar return. Formerly Ireland's own flamenco combo (famous residents, as well as chart toppers here), they have since relocated to their homeland. A bonus DVD interview sees Rodrigo and Gabriela talk about their success and return to Mexico, along with a tour of their understated studio. It's amusing to note that they haven't lost their Dublin lingo ("we were fookin' stressed" as Gabriela observes). For budding guitarists, the DVD also has a detailed 20-minute tutorial. Regardless of these details in their personal situations, R&G's flamenco power chords and intricate soloing [...]
Today is News Folder Day which means I'll be listening to all that stuff that has piled up and been labeled "News" over the last few weeks. As so often, I sometimes don't even remember who recommended that stuff, or even where I got the songs from. So I just go along, tell you what I hear, and if something's worth a closer look, I'll see what information I can get. Let's go: Lastbandalive - The Mexico Of Europe I know that this was [...]

Time for yet another episode of the 'What Have I been reading'-lists I've been keeping. I use a little booklet for this, and I'm already dreading the day that the book is full. Most of it is written in pencil, so that I could erase it, but maybe I'll just make a 900 pages long notebook myself, in which I meticulously keep listed what I've read in my life. My children, or my parents, my friends will find this list one day, thinking that I spent too much time reading and too little time living. But They don't know that [...]

025. En Ventura. "Avant" Los Gandharvas It's the start of an amazing band and I'm not sure they even know it. Well, they probably did when they recorded this, 'cause it's about as thrilling and self-conscious as it can get. Listening to "Avant" just makes one angry they're playing around with other projects instead of focusing on the truly outstanding stuff. Note the vocals; they drive this piece with razing heights, brimming only as it is necessary, rock advancement. JSB [...]
Last month Quiet Color upped the bar for our Guest Bloggers by selecting Sleigh Bells as Your New Obsession . Sleigh Bells went on to be one of the most buzzed about bands at CMJ and on the blogosphere! This month we tapped Michael from the fantastic New York and Chicago-based blog Consequence of Sound . Michael selected the Florida rock band Look Mexico as your new obsession for the month of November, what do you guys think? If you like what you hear make sure you check out Look [...]

Because of their jaunt over to Doha, but more because of a perfectly timed email from Fredorrarci I have decided that this week is going to be Brazil week. (Actually with my rate of posting better make that a week & half) Everything this week (and a bit) will all have a South American connection. But first before I begin with all that... Another international run out this coming Saturday and the tradition is to post [...]

Kristen Stewart is bringing back those ugly rolled up jeans...oh my, what a trendsetter she is. Hello? It's 1989 calling and they want their look back. She appeared at a photo call for "New Moon" in New Mexico, alongside jailbait hottie Taylor Lautner . I'm not sure what type of look she's trying to pull off here, but it borders on punk rock scary mental patient. Maybe that's what she was going for? [...]

Hesitation Wounds is out on Sleep's new home Strange Famous . A big step for Sleep and a huge win for a great label with a tight roster.(2MEX,Buck 65,Cecil Otter, Sage Francis!) To be honest I didn't have any doubt Sleep would release another solid album. Continuing where Christopher left off Hesitation Wounds shows an advancing Sleep getting faster without losing any meaning. All substance and no filler. You're not going to hear the same repeating line "You're a jerk" a million times. With Live instrumentation [...]

I'm kind of jealous of Zach Mexico . He writes books and poetry, plays in bands and speaks Chinese. He's well set for whatever THE FUTURE throws him at with MAD SKILLZ like those. His new-ish book is China Underground out earlier this year from Soft Skull Press/Pop Matters (Review on Deckfight here ). Zach even has TV talents such as displayed here in a piece about China's Tsingtao Beer on Current TV: Zach took a few minutes to answer a [...]

GOODBYE VICTORIAN HOUSES, ANTOINE REVERB Happy Garlic, Mexico **** Rating: 88 By Juan Manuel Torreblanca When I was in college, studying language and literature, I often hated teachers who turned courses that were supposed to be about an author and his work into endless anecdotes about their own encounters with the author. Nevertheless, I am [...]

We picked things right back up on Thursday afternoon, teaming up with our friends at Punknews.org to put together a showcase of some of the best rock around. Our Thursday afternoon showcase was once again at The Studio At Webster Hall where we cracked open the doors at noon for patrons to come in and take advantage of the early drink specials (and they did). People caught sets by Let Me Run , who were just a few shows into their run with a new vocalist, Defeater [...]

We spent a large portion of the Wednesday hanging out with our buddies over at The Studio at Webster Hall . We had some great bands on hand to keep us company. We teamed up with Rachael Rays' Feedback and the folks over at Amnesty International to put on two showcases, one during the day and one in the afternoon. The daytime showcase consisted of performances by Orenda Fink , Good Old War , Look Mexico , The Uglysuit , and Shayna Zaid [...]
First thing's first: If you've not yet heard, there's a brand new concert venue in Chicago. It's called Lincoln Hall and it's a 500 capacity place put together by the owners of Schubas. Lincoln Hall opened a little over a week and a half ago, and in that brief period of time they've had such notable acts as Mike Doughty, Ted Leo and Ben Gibbard with Jay Farrar all play there. On Tuesday night it was time for Chicago's own The Smith Westerns along with Neon Indian to help break the venue in further. I'll get to their individual sets [...]

Tom Russell's new album, Blood and Candle Smoke (September 15, Shout! Factory ) further solidified Russell's reputation as one of the most gifted and poetic songwriters working in music today. As Russell weaves and wanders his way through a dusty sonic landscape created by a cast of musicians including Winston Watson, Barry Walsh and members of Calexico, the songs wind into one another, unrepentant veins all leading back to the proud, stubborn, poetic heart tucked away in Russell's chest. In a blog post introducing Blood and Candle Smoke, Russell asserted that "there are few [...]
Have you always wanted to surf? Not exactly... but I have always been surrounded by surfers. It is unavoidable when you live in California, such good surf everywhere... surfers, and skiers. Any friends of yours surfed? Oh of course, there were boys in school who surfed. No girls though, wrong decade. There are girls now doing it, thank god. But at that time, you stood on the beach and watched, mostly. And I did a lot of that... particularly, I remember living in San Francisco and riding my bike once a week down [...]
