How it goes on, a conversation with Claudia Smith by Ben Tanzer I once knew this guy who fell in love with this beautiful woman from Texas. He knew he wanted to marry her the moment he met her and was very nervous when he had to meet her dad for the first time. Afterwards, I asked him how it went and he said that her father was a man of few words and that he said more in one sentence than the rest of us did in five minutes. I thought about this as I [...]
DETROIT SOCIAL CLUB If you like Kasabian , you are going to love this six piece. They may describe themselves as " big beat junkie folk ", but they're wrong, they are the new Kasabian. It's that simple. There's a little bit of bluesy Primal Scream in there perhaps, possibly even a little bit of Oasis , but mainly Kasabian. We won't be ending the critique there however, because they also happen to write fucking awesome tunes. Very much like Kasabian do actually. You know the sort of songs; absolutely [...]
Oh Word threw down the gauntlet, and GMS picked up the baton. The baton, if you will, of blogging about gigs. Yes, patient reader, between now and the end of the year, GMS aims to write about every gig we have seen this decade. Around 600 bands and counting. Why? This decade is nearing an end, and lists loom. The worry is that condensing these experiences into a list of ten - or even fifteen - of the 'best' would [...]

photos by Chris La Putt The Love Language / Local Natives One of the best times I've had a show in a long time was at the BV loft during CMJ on Friday night, October 23rd . I hope to do it again. The mix of great bands on the bill, the crowd and the location all made for a super memorable night. Both Local Natives (from California) and The Love Language [...]

○○○●● IT'S clear to see who's on Beat The Radar 's radar on To The City From The Sea . Because the Cumbrian quartet play jangly indie pop that sounds so familiar you could stick a bunch of flowers down the back of its trousers and call it a long lost Jarman brother. The Smiths and The Cribs loom large throughout, and there's a running game of spot the derivative - with hints of Buzzcocks on Telephone Conversation and early Blur on Stars among many others. Not that it's a bad thing [...]
31st of October - in da basement somewhere in Bristol ...I'm completely in awe of this place, the basement is like a extension of Joey's sketchbooks... every inch of it covered with starry spiders and inky shapes squirting out of the lumpy brickwork, shots of pumpkin light illuminating grins... up in the kitchen it was tea and Futurama, I'm wearing my Halloween face inside out, it [...]

I spend closing night at CMJ in the cozy confines of Union Hall's basement. I can't really see shows there without thinking of time (over three years ago , now) when we somehow managed to squash Secret Society into that space. Good times. Anyway, Saturday was kind of an unofficial roots/folk-rock night there, which suited me fine. La Strada were in mid-set when I arrived. As you can see, they've got kind of a postmodern Williamsburg troubadour vibe going [...]

Down to the Tiger in Long Eaton to see Len Graham ... what struck me overall on this excellent gig was the infinite flexibility of the human voice. Tonight I encountered a battery of solo singers, one story teller and one duo, stripped of accompaniment, delivering an eclectic variety of material from the traditions of the British Isles/Ireland and beyond. Which might, to a casual observer, seem somewhat arid – but believe me it was not. The diversity of songs was matched by the wide tonal ranges of the voices, tonight predominantly male but [...]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =dHGRaVkmz8w Robot Koch . The name sounds like a concept album Lupe Fiasco would conceive were he ever dropped from Atlantic and sent down to Triple A to rap for the label of choice for late-period Mobb Deep side-projects (I refuse to call it E1-it's not a vegetable juice blend, it's a record label). Straight out of Berlin, the android born Robert Koch, is slated to drop his first solo full-length, Death Star Droid , following his work in "critically acclaimed band Jahcoozi and post [...]

Recommended Show: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2009 CARPARK TENTH ANNIVERSARY PARTY @ CAMEO GALLERY 93 North 6th Street Brooklyn, NY 11211 $8, 8PM In just a few more hours CMJ will be over, and we can (mostly) forget about it for the 360 days or so. However, it appears that the wild and craziest day is still in front of us. I grabbed what I think is a good list of most day and night shows below--I will scour for my daily "day party" post just to make sure. Not only are there a shit load of [...]

For tomorrow's day party, it's time to move on into Brooklyn. NYC Taper is throwing a wonderful showcase at Bruar Falls. I like this group of bands a lot because none of them are really very flashy or buzzy or play Todd P venues or are necessarily very hip, that sort of thing. But they're all really, really solid bands and worthy of hype. A very well put-together show, if you ask me. Highlights include Kittens Ablaze, Motel Motel, Peasant, and The Loom, all of whom I've posted mp3s from here before. In honor of the really amazing rendition of [...]
