Well we spent over a year as World Champions, not surrendering the title until the calendar turned to November, and I'd like to salute the team for its efforts to try to repeat, going much further than anyone could have expected, and that only the brave few had hoped. The mid-70s Reds were the only National League team to go back-to-back in like the last 80 years or something, so for those of us who are fans of one of the 29 teams that don't make a mockery of the sport by buying themselves meaningless championships over and over again, [...]

"The Sacred and the Vulgar is a somewhat loose collection of folk tunes, self indulgent ballads and sparsely recorded pop which runs the gauntlet of influence and emotion." Artist, musician, filmmaker, are just a few of the things you will discover when trying to learn more about Brad Fielder. This man of many talents seems to lend his hand at anything within the arts, and from that wide spectrum he seems to do a pretty great job on all fields. The musician persona is the one we will concentrate on here, and having played with the [...]
CMJ took a strange and unintentional turn for the emo last night – fitting, perhaps, for a rainy evening of canceled sets, sold-out shows, and soggy hoodies. Heading to Public Assembly for mega-hyped rap duo Das Racist , I instead wound up in the venue's back room watching the cacophonous Kiss Kiss , a New York-based indie band whose dark, angsty pop-punk was given a sense of dramatic urgency by a sole electric violin. The crowd – a group that made me nostalgic for afternoons in high school spent moshing at the Punk Temple – were excited and [...]

A wee departure from pasting up film posters on the blog. What seems like a lifetime ago, I posted the late Ian Walker's 1979 New Society article, 'Anarchy in the UK' , on the blog, and it was always my intention to post other pieces by Ian Walker that had originally appeared within the pages of the now defunct British magazine, The New Society . What happened then? Well, I moved to the States and my copy of Paul Barker's 'The Other Britain' - a collection of New [...]

Former Pedro the Lion frontman (and one of my favorite songwriters) David Bazan releases his first full-length solo album, Curse Your Branches , today, a magnificent disc that chronicles his struggles with faith and alcohol. The Drive-By Truckers' Fine Print: A Collection of Oddities and Rarities 2003-2008 collects 12 rare and unreleased tracks from the band. The release list is a bit skimpy, but I can definitely also recommend Apples In Stereo's #1 Hits Explosion and [...]
As ever, the art of presentation hasn't been lost on Jack White. The name of his latest side-project, the title of their debut album and the cover artwork tell you much of what to expect within. This is dark, primal bluesy rock music, wicked and nasty; dirty and thick; and brimming with just a hint of suppressed violence. White has become something of a poster boy for the preservation of the record as an art form - from the imagery its title and artwork provoke; through to its tracklisting and old-school 'play-out as an album' ethos. As [...]

I (as well as everyone else) knew well before this album came out that this album was going to be a benchmark for lyrical linguistics. Joell Ortiz, Joe Budden, Crooked I & Royce Da 5293 are all known for their raw radical and introspective lyrics, and when you put them together the results are going to be monumental. On this album Slaughterhouse sets out to prove that although you may have thought Hip-Hop was close to dead, they plan on showing you it isn't. I can almost assure you that there probably won't be another album to come out this [...]
The word "slaughterhouse" usually doesn't bring positive connotations, but in this case it does. That's because Slaughterhouse is the name of both hip-hop supergroup and its debut full-length. Formed in late 2008, the group features the talents of Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Royce da 5293, and Crooked I. If this doesn't mean much to you then, take our resident hip-hop expert Michael Denslow's word for it. He described this foursome as "the best collective of M.C.'s since the Wu-Tang Clan," a claim which has since been backed up thanks to a slew of leaked songs [...]

I'd hate to turn into the sort of parent who thinks their brain-dead, irritating, charmless little fuckwits of children are cleverer, lovelier and more delightful than the very Baby Jeebus himself, despite their evident lack of any sort of talent or even bare sliver of tolerability to the entire rest of the human race. In the words of Bill Hicks: "Your children aren't special. Oh, I know you think that they're special... I'm just telling you that you're wrong." Well, without wishing to imply that everything by bands from Edinburgh is better than anything by bands from anywhere [...]

Well, it's Monday and that means I am catching up on what little news was dropped over the weekend as well as posting the current stuff. I was over at 2DopeBoyz this weekend and noticed that there was a snippet download for the Slaughterhouse album. Jack White's musical output has always been raw and, in its best moments, even primal in power – but one thing he's never truly captured on tape is sex. Sure, it could be argued that some of the White Stripe's slower, bluesier moments had a sexy swing (see: " Ball and Biscuit ," the seven-minute guitar crawl with huge flare-ups from Elephant ), but White's long been preoccupied with song-craft and style to concern himself with the matters of the heart, or, as it were, the nether-regions. But with [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , R.I.P. The worst of the shock may have faded, but several acts at Glastonbury made sure Michael Jackson 's sudden passing was not forgotten on Saturday. Badly Drawn Boy -- a man usually recognised more for his love for Bruce Springsteen than Michael Jackson -- played 'Rock With You' in honour, while Dizzee Rascal , appearing on the Pyramid Stage, led the crowd through a rendition of 'Thriller,' a loose-limbed singalong salute to one [...]

Where do you start? Where do you start? How about this. If I hold up my hand and count my fingers, then one of them will show that Okkervil River are clearly one of the world's great bands. Great. Superb. Astounding. Living and breathing greatness. Friday night at the Annandale Hotel was proof yet again of this band's majesty. My fifth time seeing them felt just as fresh as the first time. Invigorating and life affirming. Will Sheff, I salute you. If I state that the first part of the show was wonderful and [...]

Ace Frehley. The name alone invokes the lore, the mystique and the overall "badassness" of one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time. As an original member and founder of "the hottest band in the land," Kiss, Paul "Ace" Frehley has done nothing short of influence and inspire millions of guitarists across the globe (including late Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell). Kiss is heavy metal's version of The Beatles (to which Gene Simmons has famously stated they are, "the Beatles on steroids"), and Ace takes full reign of George Harrison's role beyond a doubt. From the early days of their [...]
