"Yes, I need four double whiskeys and four PBRs." It was Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson's record release show at Williamsburg's Union Pool, and while he was among a roomful of friends, he was not at ease. Robinson's former fiancé obliged the request, assuming it was on behalf of the entire band. This was not the case. Robinson wasn't a household name in indie rock at the time. But he had a lot of the pieces in place [...]
Original members of The Velvet Underground - frontman Lou Reed , bassist Doug Yule and drummer Maureen Tucker - will be reuniting, but for a discussion at the New York Public Library on December 8th to talk with journalist David Fricke about the band's legacy and impact on rock music's evolution. While no performances are planned, the conference follows the publication of the band's book, The Velvet Underground: New York Art which features Reed's handwritten music and lyrics, rare photographs, poster and cover designs by manager Andy Warhol, as [...]
One of the surprise debuts of last year had to be Spectacle: Elvis Costello with... , a talk show featuring Costello pulling off the rare triple threat: host, performer and bandleader. Equal parts interview and jam session, the Sundance series relies upon Costello putting the artists at ease, getting even the prickliest of artists to open up and speak warmly about their influences. But, as Martin Mull once famously quipped, "talking about music is like dancing about architecture," and so it's the tremendous musical performances sprinkled throughout [...]
By: David SchultzGiven the bad blood that runs through the veins of the surviving members of the Velvet Underground when it comes to playing together, the December 8 gathering of Lou Reed, Doug Yule and Maureen Tucker at the New York Public Library will likely be the closest we ever get to a VU reunion. The three will participate in a round table of sorts with Rolling Stone's David Fricke to

This week, we feature an artist who's a staunch supporter of your local adopt-a-cat program. In fact, he recently set up a cat themed fund raising show for the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home ( which was also one of my favorite Animal Planet shows next to Vets in Practice ). Rescue Cat , as he is fondly called, brings to us kitty friendly, electropop music, with snazzy synths that'll be sure to warm your hearts up to make room for welcoming a rescue cat - if not in your home, then maybe somewhere in your mp3 [...]

The Velvet Underground may be reuniting...but not for a performance unfortunately. Former frontman Lou Reed, bassist Doug Yule and drummer Maureen Tucker will be gathering for a public appearance at the New York Public Library on December 8th to chat with journalist David Fricke about their legacy and impact on the world of music. The event is one of many in the "Live from the NYPL" that is currently going on and with any library of course comes books...which the band currently is promoting. The Velvet Underground: New York Art is the latest book on [...]
I'm gearing up to see Devo on Friday and have been revisiting the classic era of synth-punk, a genre the band had very much to do with pioneering during their earlier years. The genre combines the intense, guitar-driven fury of punk rock with often sloppy and simplistic synth mashing. Though the instrumentation may be the same, synth-punk has little in common with new wave, the fluffier, more pop-driven counterpart. Synth-punk was often gritty, poorly recorded, nasty, and powerful as sin. With that in mind, let's touch upon a few genre classics, both new and old. [...]
Members of the seminal Velvet Underground are scheduled to appear on December 8 as part of the New York Public Library's live series. Lou Reed, Maureen Tucker and Doug Yule will chat about the band in a discussion led by David Fricke of Rolling Stone . Founding member John Cale won't be in attendance. The panel also celebrates the recently released book of art chronicling the band's formative years. Dazed and Confused calls the book filled "with more full-color images than a strong acid trip." Tickets are sold out, [...]

i listened with some curiosity and much interest the strut retrospective of ZE records , one of the most influential underground new york labels of the 70s and 80s. formed by michel esteban and michael zilkha, who were introduced to each other by john cale, the label was known for bringing together new wave, post-punk, disco and punk in a movement they termed "no wave". one of the gems in this compilation is alan vega 's first hit single "jukebox baby", a minimalist rockabilly number that oozes the understated new york cool. his rambling vocal style, [...]

Put this down in your calendars as the most epic event to ever occur in December: former Velvet Underground members Lou Reed, Maureen Tucker and Doug Yule will appear together at the New York Public Library on December 8, along with journalist David Fricke, as part of the "LIVE from the NYPL" series. The reunion partly celebrates the release of The Velvet Underground: New York Art , a book of unreleased photographs, band-related artwork by Andy Warhol, press clippings, and Reed's handwritten lyrics and music, amongst other amazing VU memorabilia. The event will be held [...]
In what may very well be the most curious and unexpected reunion, three original members of the Velvet Underground will gather for an extremely rare public appearance. On December 8th, former VU members Lou Reed, Doug Yule , and Maureen Tucker will appear at the New York Public Library's Celeste Bartos Forum, located at Fifth Ave. and 42nd street. Unfortunately, the trio will not be performing a live set (despite reuniting for scattered shows throughout the 1990s with fourth surviving member John Cale), but will instead discuss the band's legacy and music with rock journalist [...]
It's not often that the three remaining members of the Velvet Underground get together, especially as the relationship between John Cale and Lou Reed regularly goes through rough patches. But they will reunite for an appearance at the New York Public Library on Dec. 8, where they will discuss their careers with journalist David Fricke. The discussion will be part of the Live from the NYPL series, and tickets are available priced $25. Library donors, students, and seniors can get $10 off that price by buying tickets through the NYPL website. [...]

The closest we might ever get to see a reunion of The Velvet Underground will take place on December 8th at the New York Public Library. There's no performance planned (or at least one we know of) and a few key members will be missing (namely John Cale) but on that day, Lou Reed, Maureen Tucker, and Doug Yule will unite for an extremely rare joint public appearance to discuss their band's music and legacy with rock journalist David Fricke as part of the "LIVE from the NYPL" series. The event will take place in New [...]

In what is probably one of the most surprising event announcements of the season, it looks like the NYPL Live has recruited Lou Reed, Mo Tucker, and Doug Yule (3 of the 4 surviving members of The Velvet Underground) to sit down with Rolling Stone editor David Fricke for a discussion of their old band on December 8th . For anyone who is a fan of the band, this is an extremely exciting event. While some might hem and haw over the fact that it's not [...]

The well composed Words of the Knife from San Francisco's Mark Matos & Os Beaches is out today. The record leans heavily on songcraft secured by the partly withdrawn delivery of Matos. "Imaginary, Winnipeg," has a piano and steel laced country rock vibe that can be seen in part at other stops on Words of the Knife . I'm not sure if "Pelavavras De Faca" makes [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Hos, Hookers, Call Girls & Rent Boys collects stories, poems, and essays by sex workers. Compiled by David Henry Sterry and RJ Martin, Jr., the book organizes this collection of refreshingly genuine and brutally honest writings by category (love, life, money, etc.). The New York Times wrote of the book: "From the unappealing title, you might think this is a truly trashy [...]
