Songs- Songs 9/10 Max Doyle sings with a swagger in his voice that makes this a swinging record, full of rock 'n' roll hooks but free of the usual clichéd imitations. After releasing two split 73 with The Bats and Love Of Diagrams, Songs is the band's full-length debut. With heavy drones and spitting fuzz spiralling from the guitar of Jeff Burch (formally of NZ band This Night Creeps) and thick, wavy drum beats pouring from Steve Uren's (also a former member of This Night Creeps) plastery kit, Songs replenish the mid-era [...]

White Woods - Ballet Tea Minimalism is great and all, but if you're not feeling around for the corners of the box that totally admirable philosophy turns real boring, real quick. FORTUNATELY, this ominous anthem from Melbourne's White Woods is an amazing example of how good shit can sound when you apply interesting textures etc. to a song that actually counts for something. Elastic bass and beartrap drums wrap around the kind of glacially menacing melody Love Of Diagrams used to write; chiming, vaguely shoegazey guitars hover way up high, swooping in to wreak [...]

Welcome Big Day Out 2010 Tour and the endless supply of international bands of the summer months. Last night, I was lucky to have tickets to see Love of Diagrams and Passion Pit play to a sold out crowd at The Corner Hotel. Unfortunately for most who attended I feel that most of the performance of both bands went over the heads of those who attended. Love Of Diagrams ' songwriting and song structure, which, to be honest I had never paid too much attention too, was extremely impressive. They left me wanting [...]

A track from this concert on 4 April 2007, at Chelsea's (Baton Rouge, LA), was already posted a while ago: "TROUBLE," by openers Love of Diagrams . Here, finally, is a song from the main act that night, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists . This is one of my favorites by them, "Little Dawn," from 2004's "Shake the Streets." Both acts that night were recorded through the sound board, so the quality is fairly good, though the vocals are, as usual for a sound-board recording in a small club, too prominent. It's been long [...]

just as horrible as a fire usually is, just as beautiful is this rumour. if you haven't already heard the rumour, and my guess is you haven't, now's the time to sharpen your ears and spread the rumour wide. thanks to the rumour, the new decade starts off good what counts quality, danish rock with a twist and twirl of indieness. ohh yes, we're dealing with the kind of music you would want to be enjoying in the summer time. the kind of music you hope to be enjoying while standing with a sweet girl in your arms. [...]

Parts of this interview originally ran last Friday at Pop & Hiss . Words from the Genius. How did you end up collaborating with The Black Lips and King Khan? Originally, it came about through my manager Heathcliff [Berru]. The bands were fans of Wu-Tang and I and we decided to perform together. It worked out well; they're good musicians and we have a mutual admiration and love. The thing is, they were already connecting with me in some way first. I'd never heard their music [...]

There's nothing quite like the year-end list in music. December rolls around and everyone takes a couple minutes/hours/days/weeks thinking about the music we've consumed over the past year, finally pushing back from the table and digesting for a short moment. Different sites have different lists, of course, but that's part of the fun. It's interesting to see what music made an impact on what people in the preceding 12 months. Having three separate writers, we are faced with an interesting challenge – compiling a list of the year's best releases while simultaneously accounting for individual tastes. So [...]

So here's what you've all been waiting for - our top four albums of the year. Produced through complicated Venn diagrams and extended algorithms. 1- Fuck Buttons - Tarot Sport Sublime. What more can we say? Rough Steez Flight Of The Feathered Serpent 2 - Brakes - Touchdown Another of those bands we love to bits - we both saw them live this year and are still [...]

And now, the Top Ten. A few of these were probably pretty obvious to anyone that reads herohill or likes Canadian music, but hopefully some of the lesser known acts (The Wheat Pool or Julie Fader for example) are new treats for you to digest with your cranberry sauce and dindon. Posting might be a bit sporadic over the next few days, but after some of these gems we gave you, hopefully you'll remember your pals at herohill in the new year. 10 [...]

Well it appears that 2009 is about to come to a close and in preparation I've spent a portion of my time this weekend putting together that inevitable task of a year end list. After looking through it a couple times now, I feel like this was a pretty strong year for releases and it seems like a fitting list to cap off a decade or to kick off the fourth year of BOAWS. Either way, I hope everyone enjoys the list and possibly finds some more music to listen to along the way. However, to start [...]
A little while back, our pal Georgia at Microphone Memory Emotion asked me how we find the "crazy stuff" we post about on Rose Quartz. I guess it'd be tough blogging from Brooklyn, where everyone's no more than 30 seconds away from tweeting about the next massive thing, but here in Sydney it's a lot easier to find and post about a heap of cool shit that isn't already saturating the Hype Machine (totally selfish, I know!). Anyway, here are my top ten albums by Australian bands this year. Shout outs go to Love of Diagrams, Brain Children, [...]

Ok, time for the very first Waves mixtape in series I'd like to continue with a few of my favourite genres to give you a bit of an introduction; the rest of the hunting is up to you. Not all of these would be considered totally shoegaze, but delve a bit into Dream-pop and noise rock too. MP3: 1. Ride - Seagull First track of their first album, and is always a great starter for any mixtape. Full of pounding, feedback laden guitars along with the signature poppy, breathy shoegaze [...]

As the The Stabs ' bassist, Mark Nelson is making some serious lo-fi grunge music with Monika Fikerle (from Love of Diagrams and Baseball ) as Miniature Submarines . Photo: Source They're just about to release a 7" that contains the b-side "I Heard That You Turned Into a Loser, Baby" and they may just be our answer to Sonic Youth complete with heavy feedback, fuzzy distortion and Nelson's soft vocals. You might think that [...]
Following on in the trend of bands revitalizing the late 80's shoegaze sound in the tradition of My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver, Ride and The Jesus and Mary Chain come Los Angeles based Seaspin . Joining the ranks of other revivalist bands such as A Place to Bury Strangers and Love of Diagrams , Seaspin present there noise-laden distorto-pop songs with a more shiny, cleaner vibe. Their vocalist Jennifer Goodridge (previously from [...]
