BEST ALBUMS OF THE NOUGHTIES The daunting task of putting together something that you know lots of readers won't agree with is never easy, but then we thought you could always go make your own lists. At least we had the balls... So the 50s had rock n roll, the 60s had it's pop and folk, the 70s it's punk, disco and glam, the 80s it's pop, hip hop and hair rock, the 90s it's grunge, brit pop and dance music. It begs the question - what standout genre defines the [...]
It was Nashville's biggest night of the year, as the 43rd Annual Country Music Association Awards were telecast last night on ABC from Nashville's Sommet Center, and it was a big night for some of country's new blood, particularly a 19 year old who set quite a few historic marks last night. The big winner of the night was that teenager, Taylor Swift . The Big Machine phenom walked away with Video Of The Year for "Love Story," Album Of The Year for her Fearless disc, Female Vocalist Of The Year, and the night's big [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. The Simpsons is one of my favorite television comedies of all time, and John Ortved has written an invaluable oral history about the show. Covering the show's inception of The Tracey Ullman Show to its unlikely and unpredicted success in its first season and on through its later years, The Simpsons: An Uncensored, Unauthorized History not only reminds us of the greatness of the show but [...]

Hallowe'en. 'Tis the season to be dark, ghoulish and scary. It would be easy for me to post a list of top five goth songs or death metal songs, or to be relevant and cater to the taste of the masses, maybe even have run down of favorite songs from the Twilight soundtrack. But I won't. It actually would be easier for me to just produce a list of my favorite noisy songs that have a nice mix of guy and girl vocals (good songs like these are quite the find!). But, [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive , Movies The cover of Sean Lennon 's new record 'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Undead,' depicts him sitting at a piano, dressed up as a vampire. A skull and a woman adorning blood red lipstick are lying across the piano's top, giving off the image that this might be something quite appropriate for the Halloween season. The music is Lennon's official film score to the full-length feature of the same title , which was conceived and directed by his long [...]
so here I am contributing to the Albums of the Decade Blog Tour ... Brought to you by: DECKFIGHT ! This was kind of a difficult list for me put together. Usually I am pretty opinionated about my taste and what albums I love, but it's a little difficult to put a list together of ONLY 10 albums that I have loved over the last 10 years. Just to give you an idea, I went through my Itunes, picking and choosing, and I originally came up with 23 albums. Damn I [...]

Rarely does one think of Ballet and in the next thought think twisted, perverse and sadistic. These rare combinations of thoughts were combined for me last week at the Hermosa Beach Playhouse's one-night production of the Lost Angels Ballet "Burn" & "Bathing for Beauty". Wishing I had become a ballerina, I've spent the past decade of my life going to ballets, admiring the grace, agility and beauty of the men and women who glided across the stage. Most of what I've seen has been classical performances. You know, Swan Lake or the Nutcracker, where [...]

After a summer of hard work, the payoff is here: Flawless Hustle proudly presents Money Isn't Real , our first compilation. If there's one topic that's a constant in Hip-Hop is money. Whether heads are making it, spending it or stealing it, the scene (and our world) is obsessed with money. Hell, one of the reasons people hustle is to get loot, so we ourselves know the power of a dollar, which got us thinking: what the fuck is money, really? It's an interesting concept, and was a great jumping off point for this debut project, so [...]

I feel like I've been waiting forever for London-based artist, frYars (real name: Ben Garrett) to release a full proper album. His two EPs, The Ides and The Perfidy (the latter of which I reviewed here ), were fantastically dark and odd, and so I waited patiently for the debut album, Dark Young Hearts , which just released a few weeks ago, and like Patrick Wolf's latest, was financially supported through Bandstocks. Half of the tracks on the record are actually ones I've heard before whether as part of EPs, or in the case [...]

His MySpace page reads like that of a scrappy Brooklyn any-kid who makes music for his friends from the unassuming far corner of his childhood bedroom, next to a pinup of Tom Petty and a wide-eyed girl he might be in love with. The self-tweeted "Rambling Man" doesn't have that many "friends," a mere 3,968, is still grateful for small NYC club gigs, and cites both Biggie and Pavement as influences, but his music begs a much bigger bio than his profile suggests. One listen to "Buriedfed," from his eponymous 2008 debut will destroy you. It's the best [...]
It's been a year since Jason from The Pop Cop started Music Alliance Pact, a loose group of country specific blogs such as the one you're reading to showcase to each other's readership. Each month I choose a song that I think reflect the best of Australian music has to offer to the blogs. They are not necessarily the biggest hits or the most popular songs, but more what I think has the best chance of being listened to in the international blog readership. I hope you've enjoyed them because we will continue to do this as long [...]

OK rockers. Want to know the two very best kept secrets in rock today (only in my humble opinion of course)? Is that a yes? OK, I'll tell you; Built To Spill and The Black Keys. One band is from Idaho (Built To Spill) so you understand why they might not be a household name and the other is from that rock bastion Ohio (The Black Keys). Are you aware that Cleveland Rocks? Even the legendary Ian Hunter and Drew Carey know this...get on the stick! Seriously, I can't say enough about these two bands. I just love them to [...]
CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]
This is an ever changing and (hopefully) expanding list of some of the songs I have mentioned before in this blog or simply stuff I have found somewhere on the web that I find interesting, but have no time to write about. All files have been found somewhere in cyberspace (and NONE of them have uploaded by me, so I cannot help you with any requests you might have - just keep returning and something new might pop up), so they will be available until the artists, record labels, fans, whatever decide to remove them. Thanks to a few readers, [...]

L.A.'s The Colour Elect is a band made up of friends that got together last year and started writing and performing music for the sheer love of it. That's the whole story, no fluff or pretense. Their alt-rock is energetic , doesn't run over itself with misplaced vocals or instrumentals and just plain sounds damn fine. They've recently released their first EP , Back To The Sky, and it contains six songs that would sound good on a CD or in your local club. Actually, there's so much musical diversity in the songs it's a testament to just [...]

I've been spending a lot of time recently combing through Pitchfork's list of the top 500 songs of the decade, but one thing that has annoyed me is that I can't find a site that actually lists all 500 songs on one page. I'm tired of having to scroll through page after page. So, I'm doing it myself. Here's the complete list, republished merely as a reference. Go to www.pitchfork.com to see the full presentation with song reviews, artwork, and audio clips. 500. The Big Pink - "Velvet" 499. N.E.R.D. - "Run to the [...]
