Bobby Birdman - My introduction to Bobby Birdman came just recently with the release of his new album, New Moods, but he's been around off and on for eight or so years now, continually under the radar. The recently released record, which promises to be his "most complete musical effort to date," is an intriguing combination of bedroom electronica and freak-folk with traces of R&B throw into the mix. His laid-back vocal vibe often contrasts the fact that there's quite a bit going on with these [...]
Sunday, September 13, 2009 Those of you who know me probably know I write whole album reviews over at Austin Sound. Well, two albums I took home to review in the past couple weeks have stood out as particularly impressive (if a little underwhelming at times, in the case of Loose Leaves). Let's discuss: Listenlisten - Hymns From Rhodesia I love you Austin, but recently some of the most exciting new "Austin music" has been outsourced to Houston, namely to Listenlisten's new album Hymns [...]

As usual, the Texas concert listings for the month of August....delivered to you a solid week into the month! Here at Merry Swankster we like to think of ourselves as very European, mostly in honoring the siesta and taking multiple weeks off in the summer, as scant evidence from our home page can attest. Anyhoo, the Texas listings for this month after the jump. Arlington 08 Kirk Franklin at Six Flags Music Hall Austin 08 Junior Brown at Antone's 09 Method Man, Redman & Ghostface Killah [...]
Monday, July 6, 2009 Today's Quick Mention: I'm pretty much a highlights-only fan of tennis, but watching Andy Roddick and Roger Federer battle it out at Wimbledon yesterday was great fun. Makes me think I need to at least check out the Grand Slams. It seems as if everyone owns a label these days, so unless an effort carries a name that's been around for awhile I don't really take much notice of where an artist may currently be calling home. With [...]
Sunday, June 7, 2009 This week we have the second offerings from two excellent Austin bands, one an up-and-coming master of pop and jazz, the other a group of diligent songwriters who make the meaninglessness of the moniker "indie rock" all the more apparent. Check it out! Kat Edmonson - Take To The Sky Kat Edmonson made waves last year with her socially-rousing single Be The Change, which overnight grew into a YouTube sensation (I'll never get used to that word) and a local best seller. [...]
Wednesday, May 13, 2009 Today's Quick Mention: First of all, I hate that the Lucksmiths have decided to call it quits. They were a great pop act. Secondly, Rent was a good experience last night, and you should seriously consider going while it's in town this week, especially if you're like the me of yesterday and haven't seen it before. For as long as they've been around Dead Oceans has been one of my favorite labels, so of course I'm going to [...]
![The <span style="color: #384E60; background-color:#84CCF2">Lovely</span> <span style="color: #384E60; background-color:#84CCF2">Sparrows</span>: Pulling Up Floors, Pouring On (New) Paint [Album Review]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/1701367_lg.jpg)
Once again Austin delivers, this time with the recent release of The Lovely Sparrows ' Pulling Up Floors, Pouring On (New) Paint on Abandoned Love Records . And with this five-song debut EP, the Texas town continues to pump out quality artists. The Lovely Sparrows take folk music in a new direction, adding a unique abundance of percussion and a few non-traditional instruments, like the flute. I raved about "Chemicals Change" when I wrote the feature article on The Lovely Sparrows, and the rest of the EP continues with more cymbal heavy, orchestrated folk-pop. [...]

If you are fan of one or maybe more of these bands (as I guess), have a stop at the daytrotter and get the 4 song sessions of them! Incredible concept, incredible acceptance, incredible songs... Congretulations! ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead (Mar 3, 2008) The 1900s (Feb 11, 2008) 31 Knots (May 9, 2007) A Faulty Chromosome (Apr 12, 2009) A Place to Bury Strangers (Mar 25, 2008) The A-Sides (Jan 9, 2008) A.A. Bondy (May 21, 2008) About (Mar 5, 2007) The Acorn (Feb 22, 2009) Adam Green [...]
Wednesday, April 29, 2009 Today's Quick Mention: Holy Crap! It's finals time tonight at Pluckers Trivia. In the past 12 weeks Team Dine And Dash has done well (top three finishes all but four, maybe five times), so keep your fingers crossed that we emerge victorious when it matters most. Here's an EP. Enjoy. : Future Of The Left - Arming Eritrea : On the short list of bands that I'd give at least an arm and/or a leg to see [...]
![[SXSW One Helluva Recap: Day Three]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/1652419_lg.jpg)
One Helluva Recap: Day Three in Photos March is definitely one month I always look forward to, and I contribute that entirely to SXSWeek - Austin's favorite time to show some love to film, music, and technology. Buried into that schedule are four days dedicated to music, and it is in those four days that I truly live. Given here is my perspective of South By Southwest. SXSW One Helluva Recap: Day Three (artist name leads to site & all songs are right click - save as): [...]
Wednesday, April 1, 2009 Today's Quick Mention: The next big project at SOTO is going to be a full on site redesign. I need ideas and someone who is a genius in Wordpress. Please email me if you think you can help. Here's your second EP of the week. Never say I don't love you. Enjoy. : Royksopp - Miss It So Much (Featuring Lykke Li) : Yikes. I know it only says "featuring" Lykke Li, but she is [...]

Sure, you know names like PJ Harvey and The Decemberists-- and probably still Echo & the Bunnymen, too-- all of whom are playing SXSW in Austin this year. But what happens when we dig a little deeper? Pouring through the hundreds of mp3s SXSW offers from showcasing bands every year is almost as much an annual tradition as the festival itself-- if nothing else, it's always allowed those of us unable to make the trek south to live vicariously and in the process discover a song or band we didn't previously have the pleasure of knowing. It's in [...]

Austin Sound & KOOP's Now Playing SXSW Day Party Friday, March 20th (Noon - 6PM) Creekside Lounge ( 606 E. 7th St. ) | Austin, TX [ RSVP HERE ] [...]
Every city deserves a locals only website that serves the music community with such breadth and depth as AustinSound does. For the past three years right around SXSW AustinSound has released a free compilation of the best of Austin's Independent bands. This year they've upped the ante with a 2 stage free day party. AustinSound's compilations are usually pretty inclusive, so while they may focus on "indie rock" they also include all the music that is fermenting around the edges of that term. On Sound Advice Vol III: Starry Eyes [...]

Austin's 'The Lovely Sparrows' blend lush, complex arrangements with sing-along choruses that bring to mind glorious folk-inflected pop and well-written novellas. They self-released a 7inch single in 2005 then followed with an EP, Pulling Up Floors, Pouring on New (Paint) in 2006, released on Abandoned Love Records. A full length, Bury the Cynics, was recently released on Abandoned Love Records in September of 2008. Download this and other tracks for free consumption at their website below!
