This weekend managed to prove once again that I am getting too old to party like a rock star two nights in a row. The whole thing began Friday night where I set out to, and I quote myself here, "get Lucero drunk", and I am happy to announce that the mission was a complete success. The trade off of that is that recollection of the show is slightly hazy. A lot of the reviews I read leading up to Lucero's show here were about the crowd. That frat boy concentration levels were reportedly getting dangerously high, but [...]

Are they twee? Precious? Cute? Yes. Talented as well? Definitely yes. Star & Micey's self titled debut album is chok full of: - Touching, funny, touchy-feely lyrics. On "Salvation Army Clothes," a jilted lover says, "You're a fool for letting all the good people go/Like Salvation Army clothes." - Great guitar work. See the break on "Salvation Army clothes." - Neat guest stars like Luther "The Black Crowes" Dickinson; Jody "Big Star" Stephens; and Rick "Lucero" Steff. - Terrific vocals, with range and emotion. You can practically hear the tears on "So [...]

I don't cover technology too often on here but when that the folks over at Daytrotter went and made themselves an iPhone app I knew I needed to mention it. So there. It's mentioned. If you have an iPhone get the app now. Between it , Pandora Radio and iHeartNewMusic you should have all the music you could ever need. Are there any other iPhone music apps I should have? If so, let me know in the comments. Here are two tracks from Lucero's recent Daytrotter session: [...]

Do you like Jim White, Tom Waits, Howe Gelb and Chuck Prophet? Yeah...me too. What is it about their collective sound that is so cool? Probably has a bit to do with the level of musical sloppiness they all share, the amount of reverb added to both the vocals and guitars, and mostly their unique view on life. Add German singer songwriter Digger Barnes to that list above. When you heard "German" do you immediately think Hasselhoff, Lederhosen, and beer gardens? Sure Germany hasn't had the greatest rock track record of late, but [...]

It's been just over one week since Fun Fun Fun Fest 09 closed down, and left us with one of the most memorable festival experiences this year. These are the last images we left with on that wet and sloppy Sunday. I wasn't that familiar with Mission of Burma before, but the band's set felt pleasantly familiar, and took me back to a time that I wish still existed. As much of a fan I have been of Lucero's for the past few years, I had all but given up hope that the band was capable [...]

Day 1 is complete. Here are the songs the popped up on the iPod on Day 1 of my cross country move (while I was tracking them). This is also why I love using shuffle. I wouldn't have picked out most of these if I were building a playlist from scratch. Wilco - Monday Stephen Malkmus - Gardenia Marah - Wild West Love Song Rolling Stones - Dead Flowers Gogol Bordello - Immigrant Punk Arctic Monkeys - Cornerstone The Beatles - Don't Ever Change Alela Diane - White As Diamonds [...]
Lucero on daytrotter Check out Lucero 's daytrotter sessions here.
Really, I love Fun Fun Fun Festival. I will readily stand up to the masses and argue about how much better FFF is in comparison to Austin City Limits. But, as with all festivals, there will inevitably be some sort of let down that leaves you frustrated. While I think some of these may be a bit obvious, there are others that definitely need to be brought into the forefront. 5. King Khan and the BBQ Show This is mostly [...]

Daytrotter recently posted a new session featuring Lucero. The performance includes three tracks off of their new album 1372 Overton Park and one from That Much Further West . Click here for the session. MP3: Lucero - That Much Further West Bookmark It [...]
Clearly not learning from the mistakes of Weezy (allegedly), The King Khan & BBQ Show has fallen victim to the law of the land, having been arrested in Hopkinsville, Kentucky yesterday (Nov. 12th). According to Riverfront Times (via BV ), the band was arrested on drug possession charges, though this has yet to be officially confirmed. Though the band is out on bail, the duo has been forced to cancel its tonight's scheduled show Lawrence, Kansas. They also canceled last night's show in St. Louis. Fortunately, Those [...]

One of the prides of Tampa, Have Gun Will Travel, will spend this weekend playing shows around the state to celebrate the release of their new cd, Postcards From The Friendly City . The cd title is a play on the band's hometown of Bradenton, and it acts as a foreshadowing of the regionalism the band chose to take with the songwriting this time around. Musically, Postcards is a further continuation of their last album, Casting Shadows Tall As Giants . It would be easy to drop an "alt.country" or "americana" descriptor here and [...]
We hope all of you stayed dry on Sunday at the Fun Fun Fun Festival and we also hope you soaked in the great weather of Saturday. All in all we had a great time over the weekend and saw tons of great bands. Just as we did with ACL, we'd like to give you a brief recap with our top 10 favorite bands from the weekend festivities. We're putting these in no real order and just listing them with some brief reasons why we liked them so much. Follow the jump for our top 10 Fun Fest bands. [...]

Last night's Lucero show taught me a couple of things. The first thing is that I am apparently an old bastard now and the front row at a show might be a little too much for me. Be kind to me on that one as my ego (read: belief that I am Peter Pan) is a little sore along various other parts of me. The second, and more important. thing is that sometimes changing a thing that you love can make it better... This tour has been reviewed all over the place and it seems our [...]

Its Remembrance Day in Canada, Veteran's Day in the US. Having lived in both countries, Canadians take Remembrance Day very, very seriously, much more so than in the US. Perhaps it is because Canada doesn't have a formal Memorial Day like the US does. November 11 is recognized internationally as Armistice Day commemorating the formal end of World War I in 1918. Most people in Canada don bright red poppies on their left jacket lapel, above the heart. Many will read the poem In Flanders Fields [...]
