My friend (yes, I have one or two of them) James Zambon has been dubbed the official ninebullets.net photographer. This is for a number of reasons; (a) he goes to a lot of shows with me (b) he's a damned fine photographer (c) he's willing to be paid with booze, tshirts and links. Back in December I asked him to put together a set of his favorite photos from the shows in 2009. This was supposed to be posted last week but you know how those artists can be. Anyhow, here are his selections (pictures link to full-size [...]

The December podcast will ring out 2009 here on ninebullets. This month there were no themes and no sponsors, just me, a bottle of sweet tea vodka and a huge list of some of my favorite songs of this year. Some made this podcast but most didn't...not because they were inferior songs, mind you, they just didn't fit the show. Believe it or not, I do try to maintain even flows throughout these things and avoid too many whiplash tempo changes. Had I made the podcast the day before or the day after I did, it probably would have turned [...]
Man, 2009 was the year of the show for me. I saw about 35 shows in 3 different states, catching everything from Bob Log III with 8 people to Katy Perry with 3000 12 year olds . To be honest, by the end of the year I was suffering from live show burnout and I am currently on a concert hiatus through the remainder of the year. I thought I'd take a day to talk about some of the awesomeness I saw this year.... I managed to catch Malcolm Holcombe here in town [...]

Well, I guess it's my turn. Kasey and RSV have already dropped their faves of the year ( here and here ) on y'all, so there's just no avoiding it for me now. This year was particularly difficult due to the sheer amount of great music that came out, and had I made this list tomorrow it would certainly change. That said, you can edit forever but eventually you have to settle on something and call it your list. So, with out further ado I am gonna steal RSV's formatting and get this show on the road: [...]
My best friend fell in love when I played her Slaid Cleaves' "Cry" from his latest album, "Everything You Love Will Be Taken Away." It's flat-out gorgeous. My friend and I both love Cleaves' lyrics, too; they're clever, wry and often poignant. The Krayolas' new album, "Long Leaf Pine (No Smack Gum)," also got a ton of play in my house this year. When I wrote about the album in June, I said "Corrido Twelve Heads in a Bag," a song about 12 people murdered and beheaded by gangsters who were retaliating against the [...]
This mix contains a lot of songs about the radio, the ultimate medium for music... Turn your radio on - Grandpa Jones 2. My ol' radio - Malcolm Holcombe 3. Broken radio - Green On Red 4. AM radio [...]
Last year, I had the opportunity to talk with singer/songwriter/guitarist Malcolm Holcombe--and his rags to rags story was one of the most interesting things I've heard in some time. And, tonigh... Continue reading " Gig Alert: Malcolm Holcombe and Andrew Hardin at AllGood Café" >
Malcolm Holcombe knows a lot about perseverance. He's battled addictions, coped with professional disappointments, but he's channeled life's challenges into his music. And though many of the topics on his latest album, "For the Mission Baby," are dark indeed, it's hard to hide his joy in the growl of his vocals. Holcombe sounds like he's flipping off the devil as he performs the tunes, which feature old school blues mixed with country, folk and a hint of rock 'n' roll. They're the sound of redemption. Check out these videos and then visit his myspace page.

Last December I posted a compilation of cover songs perfomed by the Drive-By Trucker's . The original compiler was (and is) of unknown origin but the compilation has just been begging for a follow-up. Enter Smitty from the DBT mailing list. He's taken the liberty of assembling a new collection of covers songs culled from the numerous live DBT shows freely available on the internet. He is supposed to have a Vol. 3 already near completion as well as a collection of unreleased DBT originals. I dunno about you, but I'm looking forward to [...]
It's called "For The Mission Baby" and it is FINALLY making into serious rotation over here. I am not reviewing the album in this post as I am still only ankle deep in it. But like a recent tweet I made (yeah, I said tweet): @Slowcoustic - I feel like I'm down on my luck and there is whiskey on my breath after the first track from the new Malcolm Holcombe album I also have to admit I have only [...]
In a minor key, Malcolm Holcombe's grey, gravelly voice can sound like an extended death rattle.

Noting else needs to be said. Malcolm Holcombe stopped by Daytrotter and played songs from Gamblin House . Yeah, that album that I gushed over last year and one that was followed up by the even stronger For the Mission Baby . Last week Kasey wrote a piece about Tom Russell and I wanted to put this up the very next day. It failed to happen because I am exceptionally lazy and terribly behind. I wanted to put those posts back to back because I think there are a lot of parallels between their careers. Both have been around, seemingly, forever and despite that longevity neither have ever managed to really break into the mainstreams conscience. Hell, it could be argued that they've barely even cracked the conscience of the folks that follow this genre(s) of music. At [...]
