Hard Luck Stories isn't a masterpiece. There are almost as many misses as hits. But it's a very strong piece of work, filled with good yarns and catchy tunes. What makes for a good E Street rip-off band? When the 21st century began, copping moves from the Boss suddenly became critically acceptable, as bands like the Hold Steady, Marah and the Gaslight Anthem garnered praise and some mainstream exposure. That never happened for Ike Reilly, and I'm not sure why. He might just be stealing the wrong stuff. The aforementioned groups mimic the adrenal, fist-pumping sounds of Born [...]
MP3 : New York Is A Christmas Kind of Town Many bands have recorded great Christmas songs, but only few have put together a full album of holiday music that actually works from beginning to end. Marah is one of those acts. A Christmas Kind of Town has a great, fun vibe throughout the whole record and is one of my favorite Christmas albums of all time. Download the MP3 we've attached and buy the whole MP3 album on Amazon .
Before it evolved into "1st Quarter 2010 New Releases", this list was going to be a lot of things, "Top 50 New Releases of 20103, "Top 100 New Releases of 20103, "Top 150 New Releases of 20103 etc., etc. After realizing that a complete list of 2010 upcoming was an impossibility (or a least a gargantuan task I didn't want to take on), I decided to stick with Q1 2010. I've got a lot more info for the rest of the year, (which I plan on eventually posting), but for now, bask in this selective, yet arbitrary list of upcoming [...]
Day 1 is complete. Here are the songs the popped up on the iPod on Day 1 of my cross country move (while I was tracking them). This is also why I love using shuffle. I wouldn't have picked out most of these if I were building a playlist from scratch. Wilco - Monday Stephen Malkmus - Gardenia Marah - Wild West Love Song Rolling Stones - Dead Flowers Gogol Bordello - Immigrant Punk Arctic Monkeys - Cornerstone The Beatles - Don't Ever Change Alela Diane - White As Diamonds [...]
We've spent all this time building up our digital music libraries, so why not tinker around with them a bit and have some fun? Last week I explored tunes that clocked in at 2:28 . This week, I take it to the streets. The exercise this week is to locate your street songs. I'm not talkin' lanes, avenues, roads, courts, and the like. Nuh-uh. I'm talkin' Streets . What's more, I'm looking for songs that are simply names of Streets. "Oak Street", "Main Street", "This Street", "That Street". So that leaves out a [...]
Misguided attempt to beat all those Postal Service comparisons via the power of merch (Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello didn't even have their own official infant-appropriate onesie !), or another sign that our once-great nation is retreating into a state where it's constantly in need of comfort, whether through soothing blips or pajamas that have feet attached? I have no idea, but I do know that dressing up FOOTIE FREAKIN' PAJAMAS with the "adult onesie" nomenclature is almost as crazy as calling a backwards robe "a blanket with sleeves." Lol, words! [...]

Last night, friend of Idolator Marah Eakin broke the news that there was a new restaurant opening near her home in Chicago-and it was called, oddly enough, the Pitchfork Saloon, even though it has no relation to the tastemaking music reviews-and-news site that's also based in the City Of Big Shoulders. From the looks of things, the place looks like your typical neighborhood joint-chili and chicken-finger apps, half-price bourbon on Tuesdays, something called the "Pitchfork Build-A-Burger." But the coincidental nomenclature just begged for a few one-liners to be tossed off, what with the combination of food-borne [...]

Pete's Favorite Albums of the 00's
10 . Prince - The Rainbow Children (2001) Jazzy, funky, and dipping deeply into P's then new-found life as a Jehovah's Witness, this album connected with me more than any Prince album of the 00's (and nope, no JW am I). As much as the 54 second "Wedding Feast" makes me cringe, the album makes up for it with great tracks like "Digital Garden", "The Work, Pt. 13, and "The Sensual Everafter". Favorite tune : " 1+1+1 is 3 " (mp3) - to [...]

PHW's SONGS of the DECADE
Two weeks ago my friend John and I got together for our annual "Year In Music Fest" (it's not really called that, I just don't know what else to name it right now). At the end of every year we do a "Favorite Songs" countdown along with a discussion of our top 10 albums. This year was epic, as we not only got that out of the way, but then played our 20 favorite songs of the decade and discussed our 100 favorite albums. All told, it was about 7 hours of excellent beer and better tunes. Most people wouldn't [...]

TK #87: Marah – If You Didn't Laugh, You'd Cry (2005)
This is the most consistently engaging album by Philly's rock and roll true believers for the obvious reason: It's their best batch of songs. From the Stonesy crackle of "The Closer" to the elegant imagery of "Walt Whitman Bridge," the band displays maturity and versatility without sacrificing their trademark calamity. And "The Demon of White Sadness" delivers precisely on its thorny title. If You Didn't Laugh, You'd Cry...

Ten Years!(?)(!?!) A Guide to the Best of the Decade: 2000
So there I was last weekend, dancing like a fool, partying like it was 1999, when the realisation that a decade has passed hit me like a truck. Actually, it didn't hit me at all. In fact, I didn't fucking care. Still, it's an excuse to launch a best of the decade series, because I know how much you, dear reader, care what some random asshole on the Internet thinks was important in the 21st century (so far). For the next few weeks, I will be detailing the best albums of each year of the noughties (God, I hate that [...]

Weekend Listomania (Special You'd Never Know It, But Buddy I'm a Kind of Poet Edition)
Well, it's Friday and you know what that means. Yes, my Oriental fille de shmeckel-bopping Fah Lo Suee and I will be heading to the Canadian border, where we plan to bar the suddenly unemployed Lou Dobbs from entering illegally. Sorry, Lou -- you will not pass!!! It'll be sort of like 300 , only not as screamingly gay and with health insurance. Sooo, as a result, posting by moi will be sporadic for a couple of days. But in the meantime, here's a fun [...]
