Part Four is a little deceitful - after The Divine Comedy gets things off to a rollicking start, things slow down considerably. That doesn't mean that the level of quality lessens, though, as the songs that follow all have their languid charms. Enjoy: 1) The Divine Comedy - Famous 2) Catherine A.D. - The Book Of Love 3) Shocking Pinks - Nothing Matters When We're Dancing 4) Mary Lou Lord - I Don't Want To Get Over You 5) [...]

I can't believe another 2 months have gone by since I last updated! Not that anyone cares but I've moved AGAIN, hopefully I don't have to move for a while. The end of the year is rapidly approaching, hopefully I can get in a few more posts before the year ends, who knows if any of them will have any substance, but they will have covers. Here are Five covers of "Thirteen" by Big Star for Friday the 13th. [...]

Mary Lou Lord: His N.D. World [ purchase ] After seeing Anne's post , I just had to post this one. No Depression was a magazine that charted the rise of alt-country music in the late '90s to such an extent that its name is one of the many alternate appellations for the genre. Mary Lou Lord cleverly reworked her song "His Indie World" into "His N.D. World", thus affording her the chance to name-drop a couple [...]

Mary Lou Lord: His Indie World [ Purchase ] I was reminded of this song after reading and listening to Susan's submission of the Todd Snider track. This is another song that consists almost entirely of lists of artists. In this one's case, it's a song about how she doesn't feel like she fits into a guy's life because his life is just one long reference to the indie rock bands he loves, and she'd rather sit around listening to "Joni, Nick, Neil and Bob". The references are used so [...]

It is time for Halloween! And I haven't done an A to Z post in like forever, so, two birds, one post. You get the idea. As always, a zip file is hidden, lurking creepily in the shadows below. A is for Arctic Monkeys-Perhaps Vampires Is a Bit Strong But… I loved this band's first album. Their stuff went progressively downhill, but none of of it sucks. B is for Ben Gibbard-Thriller (Michael Jackson cover). A classic. All [...]

The song "Outdoor Miner" taken from the Wire album Chairs Missing is a short, sharp pop artefact. It's also one of those touchstone songs that everyone seems to have a cover version of, wearing their post-punk hearts on their sleeves. The actual "serpentine miner" reference in the song is to a fly larva that is noted as the most cosmopolitan species of the leaf miner family, and creates burrows in the leaves they feed on/mine (see pic). The Grays: Outdoor Miner [...]

Yes. This is a freaking Pitchfork re-post again. Don't hate the player hate the game. A list such as this is invaluable to avid music buyers, hence why we are imparting iy onto you, our loyal readers. Keeping it short, but some upcoming releases of highlight include: Alela Diane: Alela and Alina EP ; Blitzen Trapper: Black River Killer 12" EP ; Jemina Pearl : Break It Up ; Kurt Vile: Childish Prodigy; Music Go Music: Expressions and TONS more after jump. We conceited music bloggers sometimes [...]

I have been to Tennessee at least three times in my life, and have never seen Graceland. However, my wife and I were married by Elvis at the Little White Chapel in Las Vegas. The Bible: Graceland The New Pornographers: Graceland Mary Lou Lord: From Galway To Graceland

Move over saucers! There's a new shape in town! The latest UFO reports from Paranormal News point out that a majority of the recent UFO sightings denote angular spaceships. Triangular flying objects have been spotted over Florida, Texas, and Washington-state. And, not to be outdone, rectangular objects have been spotted in Arizona and Vegas. It's only a matter of time before rhombus and dodecahedron shapes appear. Keep watching the skies! Mary Lou Lord: Martian Saints

The Lady Foursquare - Breakdown/Breakthrough: August 2009 Double Mix First we went to Detroit… and that's where all the trouble began. Detroit warped my fucking head this year. After 2009's DEMF I was listening to music in a new way for the first time in years. Everything was new and fresh. A month later, and after three years of constant elation, depression, hell and highwater in the trenches of the dance music industry, I decided to abandon Chicago. We played 2 going away shows, one [...]

Bloggers love Big Star . So much so, in fact, that mere mention of their names to a certain sort of audiophile is like a secret handshake, a wink and a nod that marks the listener as a well-informed, well-cultured aesthete of a particular underground substream which defined the modern musical map. And deservedly so. Led by highly conflicted and conflicting personalities Alex Chilton & Chris Bell in the early seventies, the original incarnation of Big Star never had much mainstream success, perhaps because they were way [...]

oh my, talk about takin me back to my shitty little studio apartment on dearborn in chicago circa sometime in 1994/95. oh those your good times, the worries were few, the beer was cheap(er), the gut was flat, the lungs still in pretty good shape, my demeanor: shiny and i was listening to a lot of spinanes, lois, beat happening, mary lou lord and throwing muses. the record in question that's taking me back is canadian outfit the wind whistles and their newly released lp, animals are people too . its a folky record but with enough [...]
While the Riot Grrrl movement was taking root in North America, as is often the case there were similar stirrings going on across the pond. That branch of the subgenre was led foremost by UK boy/girl band Huggy Bear. The band had amassed quite the cult following prior to their breakup (even scoring a mention in Mary Lou Lord's "His Indie World"). But the players have been scarce since then.So

Rock photographer extraordinaire, Kelly Davidson is exhibiting her third installment of Rock 'n' Roll Parents at Zuzu on July 6th (10pm to 1am). The concept is both simple and awesome - take photos of rock people and their kids. A little peek into the home life of some awesome Boston musicians. The photos will be on display for all of July. Featuring photos of: Mary Lou Lord and Kevin Patey, Michael Hayes, Aaron Perrino, Shivika Asthana, Ted Corrigan, Mike Savage, Mark Robinson and Evelyn Hurley, Nate Greenslit, Rishava Green, Drew O'Doherty, Crazy Eddie, Dave Steele, Mike [...]
Photo gallery and review of Condo Fucks with The Bevis Frond and Sleepyhead at TT the Bear's in Cambridge MA (Sunday, June 21, 2009) How do three bands who barely ever play out (asterisk needed for the Condo Fucks) these days get together for a night of raw rock, insightful songs informed with a British sensibility, and the kind of clever indie guitar rock which was the standard bearer in the '90s? Oh, and theremin solos? The common link is Jon Bernhardt, who organized this wonderful evening in honor of his 25th anniversary of spinning records [...]

Reed KD:In Case the Comet Comes June 9th launches the career of Reed KD. The musician spent most of the last two years living out the back of a van, traveling across the country. When he finished his sojourn and found himself back home, he set out to put his music down to recordings using some microphones and his laptop. Family and friends assisted him by playing other instruments or just banging away on whatever was available. The album was completely done by Reed himself, and recorded just about anywhere but a studio. Its released through Dirty Laundry Records. Reed's [...]
Mary Lou Lord - Speedy Motorcycle (mp3)

As I mentioned in the Cymarshall Law & Mr. Joeker review , I always seem to be sleeping on shit from the previous year and more often than not it catches up with me. Enter Pacewon & Mr. Green 's The Only Color That Matters is Green . I remember hearing about this album more than once last year, and every time it was a positive note. This album is the definition of easy listening, because it takes little to no effort to enjoy. Mr. Green's production is more than exemplary and Pacewon compliments just [...]

A resurrected post today, while I write finals for my graduating seniors and wrestle with something of significance for the weekend. The following feature was originally posted Feb. 23, 2008; it was subsequently removed by blogger. As far as I can tell, the only major distinction between modern folk and a certain sort of indie music seems to be how the artists choose to produce and use instruments on their songs. And though you won't find this sort of fuzzed-out guitar on the [...]

Give the Drummer Some's 10 Favorite Downloads from the MP3 Blogosphere (see Comments, below, for helpful info about downloading) The Miner was saddened to learn this week of the April 27 death of painter Philip Stein . Longtime assistant to, and biographer of, Mexican social-realist muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros, Stein's most famous work has been viewed by patrons in the world's most famous jazz club for the past 40 years. At the request of his brother-in-law Max Gordon, Estaño (as his mentor dubbed him) painted a vibrant, enigmatic three-panel canvas [...]
