Kill Rock Stars is doing just the opposite for the Pacific Northwest scene. Tell us about the founding of Kill Rock Stars. Is the label built around some sort of mission statement? Is there anything in particular you look for from an artist you're thinking about signing? Portia Sabin: Slim Moon founded Kill Rock Stars mainly to put out spoken-word artists and to document the scene in Olympia, WA, in the early 1990s. He thought there was a lot of excellent music being made by people he knew, and he wanted to [...]

In addition to my usual year end lists , I've also compiled Best of the Decade lists . Following are my favorite albums that were released between 2000-2009... Muruch's Best of the Decade: Albums 25. Muse: The Resistance This is one of those albums that has classic potential, and I expect to move its way up the list as the years go by. A quote from my review : [...]

Most Likely To: be the year's most overlooked EP. As an introduction to their swirled, haunting sound, Exquisite Corpse serves the L.A. area trio Warpaint well. Band members Emily Kokal and Theresa Wayman share guitar and vocal duties while Jenny Lee Lindberg plays bass on their debut EP. L.A.'s Manimal Record's released Exquisite Corpse , and while it is much too easy to be suspicious of a label whose founder worked in fashion and whose raison d'être had been to release Madonna tribute records, the EP's six songs prove that [...]
On Friday, I saw Viv Albertine of The Slits , Softpower (featuring Mary Timony ) and The Raincoats play at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn. How do I feel? Lucky. As I wrote about last week on this blog , The Raincoats influenced nearly every single musician that sprang forth from Olympia and from countless other similar towns and scenes across the US. Needless to say -- or perhaps I do need to say it -- so did The Slits. So, at the [...]

[image by Songbirdnest ] So its outdoor taping season, and our first expedition proved successful. However, there are always wind and rain issues that arise and we'll certainly not make all of these events. We're excited to be capturing several of the Jelly Pool Parties with potentially some exciting news to announce with regard to that concert series and nyctaper. If you want nyctaper to record your band, a band you represent, a show you're promoting, or even your favorite band in the world, get [...]

Nova Scotia band Bloodsport are poised to release their debut EP. Goodbye To The Holy Mountain will come out on July 7th. Take a listen to this track and you can see where the Dinosaur Jr comparisons come from:"Swallowing Werewolves (I Heard Mary Timony Used To Live There)"- MP3Not only do the band name drop the former Helium singer on the 4-song set, but they also take a tongue in cheek shot
Master shredder Marnie Stern was lounging poolside with her sweet little dog when she spoke to PopMatters about her love of Hella, her current collaboration with Mary Timony, and many other subjects....
