It's award season! Can you feel it in the air? The Golden Globe nominations are already creating Oscar predictions, Ryan Seacrest is polishing his lifts and red carpets are being shampooed into a glory befitting of Angelina Jolies pumps. The Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominees were announced today and basically the SAG awards are actors patting each other on the back. Regardless, it's a chance to flaunt fashionable creations and I hate to equate it to the prom, but that is pretty much what it is. I am pulling for Meryl Streep for her performance in "Julie [...]

It's a tough weekend to avoid the BlueSix: two solid and almost entirely native back-to-back lineups. Administering massive psych jams is 3 Leafs , who has many times been undeniably named a supergroup including members of Horn of Dagoth , Black Fiction , Tussle and Citay . They're joined on Saturday (9pm) by Birds & Batteries , Sean Smith and Spencer Owen (Smith plays guitar for Citay), and Tony Dryer . [...]

Recommended Show: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2009 CARPARK TENTH ANNIVERSARY PARTY @ CAMEO GALLERY 93 North 6th Street Brooklyn, NY 11211 $8, 8PM In just a few more hours CMJ will be over, and we can (mostly) forget about it for the 360 days or so. However, it appears that the wild and craziest day is still in front of us. I grabbed what I think is a good list of most day and night shows below--I will scour for my daily "day party" post just to make sure. Not only are there a shit load of [...]

So, I don't know if I've already mentioned this enough already, but I'm going to NEW YORK on Sunday for a week of tomfoolery and Big Apple based fun. We've also chosen this week in particular to head across the sea as it's CMJ Music Marathon and there are some pretty fucking cool bands playing. A fair few that we've featured on this here blog in fact. Hooray for us and coolness! But, my problem is I just can't process this list of bands who are playing. There are too many for my [...]
Photo coverage of Matt Bauer & Jolie Holland at Minneapolis' Varsity Theater.
Here are the Wisconsin and Chicago shows we recommend you take in this week. Check them out below and let us know which ones you'll be attending or ones you think should really make our list . This week's recommended new releases includes new offerings from The Flaming Lips , Fanfarlo , and Thao With the Get Down Stay Down . All come with our stamp of approval! Upcoming Wisconsin Shows: [...]
Sorry for the relative silence around these parts the last few days. I'm still settling into my new Chicago digs, though thankfully I'm just about done unpacking. That means you can expect all kinds of low-quality blogging coming your way later this week. Until then, here's what is going on around Chicago this week. My picks are in bold . If I've missed anything, feel free to add it in the comments! Oh, and I beg you... someone out there has to go see Cattle Decapitation at Bottom Lounge [...]
Another upcoming show at Stuart's Opera House that's worth mentioning: Jolie Holland (above) will play the historic theater on Saturday, 10/17. You're probably familiar with Holland's jazzy folk, but opener Matt Bauer is a folkie who's not as well-known but would be worth the drive to Nelsonville on his own. The Black Swans labelmate came to Columbus last October in support of The Island Moved in the Storm , a haunting, stirring album of gently plucked guitar and banjo. Yes, the dude has a big beard and sings in a whisper, [...]
CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]

*Photos by Brandon Hirsch, 2009 NYC and Philly band The Walkmen played a great set at the TLA on Wednesday night, further cementing them as a staple of the rock community. Unfortunately, due to traffic and dead camera batteries, we missed local openers The War On Drugs (since when do shows actually start on time?). The second opening band, Here We Go Magic , played a fun set full of expansive guy and girl vocals. As a casual listener [...]
A few months back I was drinking with a friend and fellow music geek, when conversation turned to musical "guilty pleasures." Thanks to one isolated incident that made me the laughingstock of the MOKB mothership, that topic makes me a little gun-shy, so I deflected the question over the course of several rounds until, finally, I admitted that I was a huge fan of the Pet Shop Boys . Surprisingly, my friend did not react poorly, adding that, he too enjoyed their music. In fact, he was so understanding [...]

Welcome back to Video Round-Up, where the SD crew picks through the flurry of videos circulating this particular week and posts the highlights. We took a little break after the insanity of Outside Lands , but now we're back for another Friday Video Round-Up. This week, we've got video stimulation from Brendan Benson , Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros , Born Ruffians , Passion Pit , Kurt Vile , [...]
In conjunction with his upcoming tour with Jolie Holland (including a previously announced Madison show), Matt Bauer has released the staggering video for " As She Came Out of the Water " above. If we haven't already convinced you of Bauer's songwriting brilliance, I can't think of a better introduction than this video and of course, seeing him live. Buy: Matt Bauer - The Island Moved in the Storm ++ Myspace: Matt Bauer [...]
Here's some background info from Declan's bio: "In 2008 I recorded "A fire to scare the sun" in the same abandoned room I recorded my first album. I would love to say it was an easy process but it was like pulling teeth with rusty pliers and then shoving them back in again after dipping them in salt. Paralysis by analysis. Sometimes you have to say "Fuck it, it is what it is...shut the fuck up and play". So after months of agonizing over this word and that note I just went in and played. I let [...]
