As I said, Matthew Lindley & Troubadour Deluxe were the openers. If it falls on the opening act to truly warm up a crowd, in a bar, on a Friday night, ML&TD did the trick just fine. Not too flashy, just a five-piece with a few pretty harmonies, glib songwriting and a lead guitarist (Dean Kattari) that deftly noodled through each song like it was the first one he ever learned. Lindley's songs tend toward the stories of Americana; sappy love songs, soul baring confessionals with a sense of fun and a country edge. Highlight was [...]

Real Estate 's self titled debut album came out today, 11/17 on Woodsist Records. The album is available in both CD and LP formats and can be picked up here . The New Jersey quartet is currently on the road with Pill Wonder and just finished up dates with San Francisco's Girls , which I must add put out an amazing record as well this year. If you missed it, we actually covered their Maxwell's show . You can that out here . More on the band below. "Real Estate [...]

Filed under: Exclusive , Guest Blogger Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs have teamed up again for another collection of cover songs on 'Under the Covers, Vol. 2,' and are currently on the road together for a small acoustic tour in support of their latest record. Sweet will be checking in with personal photos and anecdotes for his fans as the intimate club run continues this month. In his second entry, Sweet explains why [...]

The Jayhawks are one of the most respected acts to come out of the early days of the alt-country movement. Led by Gary Louris and Mark Olson, The Jayhwaks won a legion of fans with their Byrds inspired jangle pop/country sound and their extremely tight vocal harmonies. The formula worked to perfection on three wonderful albums... 1989's Blue Earth , 1992's Hollywood Town Hall , and 1995's Tomorrow the Green Grass . Despite the band's success, founding member Olson left the group following the Tomorrow the Green Grass [...]
This was a nice chance discovery. This dude seems to have a collection of performances filmed at Toronto's El Mocambo club, and he's put some up on YouTube, including the above footage of John Metcalfe and Vini Reilly. It's new to me, and, I suspect, most of you too. He's said he may put more Durutti Column clips up, so subscribe if you get the chance. Even more exciting (to me at least), he has five or six vids of The Golden Palominos (of whom more shortly). The one below features the aforementioned Syd Straw [...]

So many great choices for Thursday. You could start at Toad for the early part of the night and see uke master Melvern Taylor. Afterwards there are many venues that have great line-ups. Gordon Gano, yup the guy from the Violent Femmes, and his his new band is at the Middle East with Sidewalk Driver and Mascara. Also on Thursday there's the Lovewhip cd release at Church or go to TTs for John Powhida International Airport, Logan 5 and the Runners, Weisstronauts and Mercy James (great local line-up!). On Friday, I'll Be at Precinct to see My Own Worst Enemy, [...]
For every band, there's always a disenfranchised member who wants to do more. Maybe get a little more exposure, come out from behind the drums, or even hear some of his lyrics actually being sung back at him (or her). Maybe that's the problem. Maybe it's a female tired of hanging out with these smelly guys all the time. Well, how come there's no Meg White solo record? Sideprojects are predominantly a man thing. Men seem to lose it when trapped in one groove and want to move on (note, this is no way a reflection on me or my [...]
"In Perfect Time" - the Sun A fuzzy blast of melodic noise, "In Perfect Time" seems to want to be played really loud. As a matter of fact, it has a kind of sneaky effect going--the louder I turn it, the louder still I feel I need to hear it. This clearly has to do with how singer Chris Burney's voice is mixed down, but it's more than just that. Any number of other bands have done the mixed-down-vocals thing and it doesn't always have my hand reaching for the volume dial (okay, [...]

Zowie, another great weekend of music with lots of choices. On Thursday, unfortunately the UK band, Heavy scheduled to play at Great Scotts has cancelled their tour so if you were planning on checking them out, sorry. But don't fret, there's an awesome show at the Lizard with Jenny Dee & the Deelinquints, the Rudds and Brett Rosenberg. Friday starts a big weekend for the Plough and Stars which is celebrating its 40th Anniversary with a plethora of bands playing and it's free! Friday night has Andrea Gillis , The Family Jewels and others at the Plough. If that's not [...]

Rich album of melodic pop The Internet has given public voice to thousands of musicians whose work would otherwise be heard only in live performance or on spottily self-distributed CDs. The downside is that the lowered barrier leaves consumers and reviewers besieged by a multitude of voices that often drown one another out. The artist's problem has shifted from breaking through the record labels' distribution monopoly to standing out in a very large crowd. The upside is that some of this DIY music is as good or better than that being pushed by commercial [...]

Apparently Halloween Weekend means every band in the area is appearing as another band, could be entertaining or just confusing I guess we'll have to check them out to find the answer. On Thursday you can go to TTs and see the Talking Heads, Robert Palmer x 2, The Replacements and The Who. Or you could go to the Plough for the surf band The Trabants and the Middle East has King Khan & the BBQ Show and Downbeat 5. On Friday the Armory in Somerville has a spooky event with the screening of Phantom of the Opera and music [...]
Well friends, HPX 09 came to an end, and due to our downright busy-ness, we could do the kind of day-by-day recaps we might have liked, but we did capture some of our classic grainy pics (now with 30% more grain, thanks iPhone!) and poorly recorded bootlegs, and so we wanted to share them. The Ack called it prefectly this AM, as my brain is also "happily existing as musical oatmeal right now", and so there shant be a ton of verbiage here, just some sweet bullets and then the pics and songs. So, some brief [...]

Though they started in 2002, it would be nearly six years before the world would learn of the beautiful harmonies made this family of musicians. Joshua caught up with The Bridges to see how their debut album Limits of the Sky came about and what's next in their future. Joshua, PopWreckoning: You all started with just Brittany , Natalie and Stacey . Why and how did you decide to get Jeremy and [...]
Wednesday night was Secret Society's actual CMJ showcase night, a co-production between our label, New Amsterdam Records , and Cantaloupe Music , which is of course part of the Bang on a Can empire. The evening began with a lovely piece of solo piano music by last year's Pulitzer Prize winner, David Lang, performed by Ning Yu . Our New Amsterdam compatriots NOW Ensemble followed, with a mix of NOW staples and some new works, including a pretty sweet piece by John Altieri . The group was coming off a mini-tour, having [...]

Halloween is coming! Zombieland is in theaters! IFC just ran a 1 hour doc on movie zombies! It's that most wonderful time of the year . . . There's a zip file, walking among the undead below. Oh, and before you start bitching: I know I didn't do every single letter. Deal with it. A is for Asher Roth. Yes, that's right, the mediocre Jewish rapper who was paired, by DJ Cinema on his recent "Stimulus" mixtape, with Jadakiss, Kanye West & Big Boi on " Is He Rich Like Me? " [...]
