In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Lydia Millet is one of my favorite writers, and her first collection of short fiction, Love in Infant Monkeys marries celebrities with animals to great effect. These keenly written interactions of human and animal move these tales forward and offer rare insights into the human psyche as well as our celebrity-obsessed culture. The Los Angeles Times wrote of the book: "Lydia Millet's first [...]
San Francisco's the Fresh & Onlys make for great autumn listening. There's something gothy about their psychedelic rock 'n' roll swing, but the sort of vintage wind-blown vibe that's more internal than dyed hair or eyeliner. That atmosphere was definitely there on " Invisible Forces " and " Dude's Got A Tender Heart ." You know, a sort of refined Gun Club garage thing (they still do mention Buzzcocks, Mekons, and Country Joe and the Fish as favorites). As far as their employment info, bassist Shayde Sartin explained: I'm the only one currently with a full-time job. I [...]

The Associates released ' Club Country ' on April 26th 1982, which appeared on their third album, Sulk . The B side was a non-LP track. The 12 inch version added "Ulcragyceptemol" (added as a bonus to Sulk when it was re-released) and a remixed version of "Club Country". The single reached the #10 spot on the U.K. singles chart. AND I HADN'T HEARD OF THIS BAND UNTIL LIKE 2 MONTHS AGO. It's pretty shocking, actually, especially considering how much they resemble early Cure and Factory artists like A Certain Ratio or Happy Mondays. In fact, Michael Dempsey [...]

Filed under: Around the World Hard not to look at the choice of 'Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood' for the lone cover on 'rivermudtwilight,' the first album by the super-trio Les Triaboliques , as coming with some subtext. After all, "misunderstood" is almost a default setting for these guys, each with histories of doing music that sometimes might have confused and confounded people. Ben Mandelson very purposefully confounded -- and delighted -- many in the guise of Hijaz Mustapha with the high jinks (and high-standards in music) in the [...]

Despite the colorful palm trees on the cover, San Francisco lo-fi psych-garage crew the Fresh & Onlys' Grey-Eyed Girls is proving to be a great soundtrack for the shift from summer to fall. After seeing the quintet -- who reference the Buzzcocks, Mekons, and Country Joe & the Fish as influences -- at Todd P's Woodsist-curated SXSW '09 event I described them as "an autumnal Sticks & Stones." Now that it's actually colder out, it's good to see an off-the-cuff remark made in 90-something degree weather sticks. You definitely got a sense of the chill [...]
The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir are neither from Scotland nor do they play gospel. The Chicago band release their new album ...and the horse you rode in on on September 15th on Bloodshot Records. And by the way, don't confuse the album title with this one.Stop - The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir
