I only met Mark Mulcahy once. It was on the night that Mark and Ken played the North Star with The Mountain Goats who were on tour with Bowerbirds. This is the first night that I was lucky enough to have met my friend Ken Maiuri (an amazing musician and person, bar none , as they say). This was also the night that I received the most amazing hug in the World from John Darnielle, who come to think of it: should go down in history as a man with a Gift of Hug. It was a magical night. [...]

Haven't done a real time review in a while, and hey, Fall Be Kind just leaked. Let's see what's up. Here's a live blogging of my thoughts, revisited only for editorial clarity or to fix grammatical errors... Graze (5:22) - Dang, kinda sounds like a Disney film. Like, this fits in well in Aladdin specifically. A ballad sung by Jafar. Dreamy piano drops in at the 2-minute mark. Kinda John Tesh-y. The synth swells and whispy vocals a minute later is similar to Mercury Rev, but like, kinda bad [...]

It's been over a decade since Mercury Rev's Deserter's Songs and Neutral Milk Hotel's In The Aeroplane Over The Sea , two albums that pushed the boundaries of chamber-pop and psychedelic rock in an era of indie innovation that has few rivals. Without shouldering them with the burden of exaggerated expectations, blossoming Los Angeles act Pepper Rabbit picks up where those records left off - stylistically, if not yet quite qualitatively. But on two self-released EPs, the band's music aches with potential. Throughout, Pepper Rabbit goes dark and deep, letting [...]

It's been a little while since we've heard from Internet video sensations/alternative prankster OK Go. The band is back today with the release of their new single and video "WTF?". The full album comes out on January 12th. Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky (I love it when American band's spell "colour" properly) was produced by David Fridmann (Mercury Rev, Flaming Lips, MGMT) which should bring

At the start of the 1990s, a number of psychadelic bands like the Shamen changed to become dance acts. At the end of the 1990s, psychadelic bands brought more rock psychadelia into dance but remained content to straddle the borders. Regular Fries were one. Bit muddy sounding though, as if too many drugs were muddying the music. England's Regular Fries are anything but. The seven members of the Regular Fries collective hail from different walks of life and their multi-faceted approach to music reflects this fact. While they have [...]

Recommended Show: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2009 JASON ANDERSON @ CAKE SHOP 152 Ludlow Street Manhattan, NY $6, 8PM 10002 We've recommended Jason Anderson 's live show before, so we won't bore you with the details about how awesome it can be. And, despite the other shows going on tonight, which include some heavyweights, you won't find a better way to spent this Monday night. The Answering Machine @ Pianos Rev Vince Anderson @ Union Pool Ray LaMontagne @ Beacon Theatre Old Ceremony & Modern Skirts @ Mercury Lounge Peter Bjorn and [...]

Recommended Show: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2009 FUCK BUTTONS, GROWING, & THESE ARE POWERS @ BOWERY BALLROOM 6 Delancey Street New York, NY 10002 $15, 7:30PM With a few residencies starting out tonight (Jason Anderson plays a few consecutive Mondays at Cake Shop, Noah and the Whale starts their first of three days at the Mercury Lounge), I sort of felt like I had to give the nod to a one off show, Fuck Buttons at the Bowery Ballroom. What actually makes this show stand out is the strength of the two openers, Growing and These Are [...]
Android Angel "Glow Worm" Paul Colto (aka Android Angel) set forth to create this album and right away his musical equipment was stolen. Continuing undaunted, the album has contributions from musicians along Paul's journey. This is not a standard indie pop album, as the opening track "Music of Android Angel" combines synth, guitar, drums, and radio sound bytes overlapping into a harmonious pattern. But this odd electronica styled opener is just an appetizer. The wonderful "In Communique" has a very Dylanesque quality that utilizes an orchestral sweep and a female backup chorus. This continues [...]

S ome medicines carry the warning: do not drive or operate heavy machinery after taking. This needs a similar caveat. On this Kramer-produced second album from the Minneapolis band, there are washes of psychedelic colour and a trance-inducing metronymic Krautrock beat. And while you can clearly hear the influence of the Silver Apples and the driving rhythms of Can, you can also detect the narcotic 80s/90s indie feel of bands like Spacemen 3 and the Telescopes, while there may even be some of the dreamier elements of Mercury Rev in the mix too. [...]

Paris photo by Stuck In Customs We know 2001 as a demode Michael Bay movie come to life. Literally, a few hours when we thought civilization was ending, or at least that is what it seemed like here in Washington. I don't like documentaries about that day because they always begin with how pretty the weather was and how la dee da... and then you know what is coming and you can't do anything about it. [...]
I believe that, technically, Atlas Sound is the headliner, but I'm treating this show as if Broadcast was. I love both artists, obviously. However, Bradford Cox, to quote The Spirit of Truth , makes his "ass very available," whereas Broadcast hasn't been around in a minute. So for me finally seeing Broadcast, after being a huge fan for six or seven years, is quite huge. They were also the primary motivation for making the three hour trek up I-71. I'm pleased to report that the goods were thoroughly delivered. Opening was The [...]

Recommended Show: MONDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2009 HAR MAR SUPERSTAR @ MUSIC HALL OF WILLIAMSBURG 66 North 6th Street Brooklyn, NY 11211 $12, 8PM Monday nights are often dull for shows in New York City, but tonight has some good ones (call it a post-CMJ effect). Parts and Labor will take to the stage at Death by Audio and Har Mat Superstar gets it on at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. It was a tough call between these two shows, but Har Mat edged out. Bang Bang Eche and My Jerusalem (both of whom could be recommended [...]

Mercury Rev were, for quite a long time throughout the 90s, one of those bands who got a fair bit of critical acclaim in the music papers and magazines but who were often quite difficult to track down on radio. They were, to all intent and purposes, a perfect definition of a cult band. Between 1991 and 1997, they churned out 3 LPs and 9 EPs /singles, none of which sold all that well in the UK. Back home in the USofA , they were even more unheralded, with the [...]
