![The Great Northwest: The Widespread Reign Of… [Album Review]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/1837657_lg.jpg)
I'm becoming quite fond of The Kora Records . With only about a dozen releases under their belt, they've already established themselves as a powerfully unique label with an eye for great talent. They've released phenomenal records by The LK (bringing the Swedish duo over to the US release of their debut LP), a few by Meredith Bragg , and the amazing Gregor Samsa . Like the Meredith Bragg and Gregor Samsa acts, The Widespread Reign Of... by The Great Northwest sides [...]

Excellent week of music coming up. My picks in bold . Not sure how many of these shows I'm gonna make it to, though, considering (a) the amount of work I have this week, (b) the remaining Stanley Cup finals game(s), and (c) the fact that I have jury duty this week (ugh). Also, I think I'm seeing The Figgs in Philly on Friday, and The Posies in New York on Saturday. I think. Don't let my excuses keep you from going to the shows, though. [...]

Tonight in Baltimore don't miss a crazy good hip hop event at Sonar presented by Busy Bee. The teacher Krs-One is there with Marley Marl, Mizery Loves Company, DJ P-Funk, and DJ Ice. Another hip hop event is going on at The Zodiac as well with Labtekwon, Jones, Alexis Gideon, and Shelley Short. Down in DC the Rock and Roll Hotel has Meredith Bragg, David Stein, Rana Mansour, and Laura Tsaggaris playing while Imperial China is roughing up the Black Cat along with Sean McArdle. Also Lady Sovereign plays the 9:30 Club [...]
One of the main reasons for album leaks is the nature of the traditional press cycle. Press outlets-in particular, print outlets-have what's called a "lead time," a reasonable (but sometimes unreasonable) amount of time necessary for them to have the record in order to cover it around its release date. The industry standard is three months, but it can vary based on frequency of publication. And as print media tries to compete with online media for timeliness, some outlets have demanded even longer lead times-which, of course, means more time for a record to be out there, and more [...]

Last Thursday I swore of basketball for the night (I more than made up for it over the weekend) and headed down to the Black Cat to check out Pree and Meredith Bragg . As I've mentioned a few times in the last week or so, Pree is the new group formed by May Tabol, formerly of Le Loup . Her new group put on a great gig showcasing her quirky folk-pop. Definitely worth checking out if you are curious about them. I was surprised at how polished they were. [...]

May Tabol, formerly of Le Loup, is now fronting Pree . Very reminiscent of Modest Mouse and also likened to Regina Spektor and Joanna Newsom, they are having a little throw down at the Black Cat for the upcoming release of their new EP, A Chopping Block , set for official release the 24th on The Kora Records. Many musicians from some of your favorite area bands also made a contribution to the record, such as John Thayer and Susan Hsu of Exit Clov, Tom Hnatow of These United States, Vanessa Degrassi of Ash Lovely, and Randy [...]
I found this pretty funny. My twitter feed wasn't too bad yesterday, hopefully it stays that way. Truth be told I considered going to SXSW this year, but by the time I checked for flights they were $600. Plus, I would probably go insane not watching the first weekend of the NCAA Tourney. I think I'll do all of my networking in Chicago in July . Luckily, there are plenty of great shows around town this weekend and beyond that will keep my busy. [...]

Tonight in Baltimore don't miss out on a beautiful music event over at the Talking Head with Nicole Atkins, Abby Mott, and Kadman. If you crave some louder music the Ottobar has your fix with The Matrimonials, The Demon Beat, Snowmen, and The Young Jaguars (members of Thee Lexington Arrows). If you are down in DC don't miss Pree's CD Release with Meredith Bragg and Birdlips at the Black Cat . Also in DC are The.Black.Out.District, The Console War, and Sean McArdle who play the Rock and Roll Hotel . Finally up north in [...]

If you're the D.C. area and won't be traveling to Austin next week, don't wallow in your recession blues. Washington, D.C.'s Pree are having a CD release show next Thursday at the Black Cat, with Meredith Bragg. Bring enough money for the CD, which is all wit, charm, candor, and depth, with lyrical and musical twists throughout, and beautifully unexpected. You've never cast a shadow in your life We fell asleep for longer than we like We seem to pass the same moon every night It's only bright enough to show a [...]

The debut release by Pree, A Chopping Block , is a five song EP out on March 24th, available digitally on March 17th, with pre-orders at the Kora Records store. After some great weather and a holiday you either love or hate (damn you, St. Valentine!), winter is somehow still here. And since I got a new cable line wired into the apartment, so am I. Spring is just around the corner and bands are gearing up for the festival of festival in Austin. Yes, SXSW is only a month away. So prepare yourself for a veritable onslaught of bands fine tuning their shows before heading down Texas way. Papertrigger A few bands are [...]

You probably know Thomas Lennon best as Lieutenant Jim Dangle on Reno 911. What you may or may not know is that he's also part of the all-star improv group The State, he's been in tons of movies you've seen, written tons of movies you've seen, loves Morrissey and has his own band. He recently spoke to Buzzgrinder, and I'm still kind of in shock that he recently spoke to Buzzgrinder. To begin, I am very nervous about interviewing you. You are pretty much a huge star. Can you tell [...]

The Kora Records recently celebrated the 4th anniversary of their first release by culling some notable performers from its impressive roster for an intimate show at DC9. Pree, who we interviewed pretty recently when they played an Obama benefit set the mood for the night, followed by the traveling songs of Meredith Bragg. But of course, [...]
