Andrew Stockdale (the singer) from Wolfmother looks like Carrot Top. There I said it. And while I'm at it Dhani Harrison from thenewno2 looks a lot like his dad George....Harrison....from the Beatles. [...]
Seeing Thee Oh Sees did nothing to diminish their unique mystique. Yes, they are regular folks and not the underwater dwelling subhumans I may have made them out to be in my review for Help . Even so, the combination of John Dwyer's spastic antics (think Crispin Glover having an epileptic seizure) and Brigid Dawson's cool, ladylike demeanor creates its own, different strangeness than what you get from their records. Their set at Schubas on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009, was [...]
Revolver is a pretty appropriate title for the Beatles seventh album. For all intents and purposes, it's a shot in the dark from the world's greatest pop band. Chronologically, it's the next album after Rubber Soul and the one just before Sgt. Pepper's , arguably representing the band at its most experimental and psychedelic. But contextually, this album offers the band new opportunities. It also is a move from the American-inspired soul, rock, and R&B pop bonanzas that dominated much of the band's sound until this point in 1966. This is a band [...]
After a little more than a week in New York City, I am finally set up with my own Internet connection. I don't know what I was thinking by not setting this up before I arrived, but it certainly made blogging this past week more of an adventure. Thanks goes out to "default," owned by whatever neighbor of mine has no idea how to password-protect his or her wireless router. No thanks to "The Wacko From Chicago" (whose connection was tenuous at best) and to "Can't Touch This, Nah Nah Nah Nah," just for being an ass. [...]
Time again for a few quick notes and a few new tunes... *** First of all, I'd like to mention a new live concert series that is starting up in Knoxville in July. "Old City Live" kicks off Thursday night July 2nd in an area of downtown Knoxville called The Old City and is completely free to attend. The first show will feature J.C. and the Dirty Smokers along with Mic Harrison and the High Score and takes place one week after the final 2009 installment [...]
NPR's Mountain Stage had a rare mid-week concert Wednesday night, and temporarily switched venues for the occasion. Scheduled to perform were Neko Case, Crooked Fingers, Vic Chesnutt, Greg Brown, and Sonos. The radio concert series is usually taped live in front of an audience at the Cultural Center auditorium in Charleston's Capital Complex. But for this night, the show was held at the Civic Center's Little Theater - the same venue where the Irish boys played last May. I prefer the comfy atmosphere of the Cultural Center, but I'll take Mountain Stage wherever [...]

Subquestion: HOW MUCH DOES THE COVER ART OWN?!??!??!? Lindstrom, "Grand Ideas" (Radio Edit by Prins Thomas) - Once or twice upon a time many moons ago, I hit upon the ( completely original ) idea to write a running diary for albums as I listened to them for the first time. It worked out pretty well for a while; I really thought the buzz was about to hit critical mass when the Foo Fighters booked me to open for their [...]

Before packing our bags and heading back to the day-to-day grind that is real life, we were able to take in a couple more days of fun in the sun/overwhelming amounts of music/drunken record executives. Without further ado, the conclusion of our South by Southwest 2009 coverage: Friday, March 20th: It's hard to cover Friday without sounding self-aggrandizing, so bear with us. Truth be told, CoS had too much going on to really reach out to anything else. With our Brodown Hoedown party taking up the majority of [...]

By now, most people who've heard (of) Les Savy Fav know their live show is more spectacle than concert. This is due in large part to front-man Tim Harrington, whose no-holds-barred antics could probably attract the same crowd sizes on their own. This isn't to knock Les Savy Fav's music, or their ability to play it in a live setting - there'd be nothing wrong with watching them stand or dance around like any other band. But with songs as sexually charged and defiant as theirs, the baccanalian atmosphere just drives the point home. Their Noise Pop closing [...]

Just a few quick-hitters to get you through to the weekend... *Knoxville's local free weekly newspaper, The Metro Pulse , printed something really cool last week. Late last year, they conducted a poll of stalwarts of the local music scene from the last twenty years (club owners, musicians, writers, etc...) in an attempt to determine the "Best Knoxville Band Ever." It turns out that Knoxville has produced some tremendous music in its time (Artists who fell outside of the Top 10 include The Everly Brothers and Roy Acuff). Checking in at [...]

Mary Hamilton In a city filled with writer's there has to be plenty of stages. This is where a writer can try out new pieces, and get instant reactions and feedback. Who better to set that stage but a fellow writer. They know how to let the reader to get the full experience. One of the more original series in town is called Quickies, and it is co-hosted by Mary Hamilton and Lindsay Hunter. What makes the series unique is its rapid pace brought on by time restraints and size of the pieces. It [...]

John Davis and the boys in Superdrag are planning to hit the road. Not literally, though. That might hurt their hands. Har har. Anyway, the March and April dates are in support of the upcoming record — the band's triumphant return to the top of the heap — Industry Giants , out March 17. Here's the album's first single, Slow to Anger . Superdrag - Slow to Anger MARCH 13 | KNOXVILLE, TN | BARLEY'S TAPROOM W/ [...]

Here at WDVX, we have a tagline that we add to most of our station ID's and promo announcements. That tagline is "East Tennessee's Own," as in... "This is East Tennessee's Own, WDVX." We use it a lot. It's on our website . It's on our t-shirts. It's on our posters. It's said roughly 2,147 times a day on the air. It's a sort of branding that we use to distinguish ourselves from other stations and tell our listeners who we are and what we care about in three words or less. It's also a [...]
