Wire formed in London, England in 1976, the group consisted of Watford Art College students. Collin Newman was on vocals/guitar, Bruce Gilbert on guitar, Graham Lewis on bass/vocals and Robert Gotobed on drums. Influenced by the emerging UK Punk scene at the time, Wire began playing live shows and gained the interest of Mike Thorne, who was a producer that had connections with EMI Records. Thorne, who was recording local Punk acts at The Roxy for a live compilation album, recorded Wire and included two of their songs on the compilation (titled Live At The Roxy ). Shortly after [...]

On December 23rd, the Washington D.C. area received 16 inches of snow, making it the sixth largest snow storm the area had seen in recorded history. Shortly thereafter, I escaped to my home country of South Africa, where summer reigned supreme. I thought, perhaps, that D.C. had seen the worst of the bad weather, but upon my return I was greeted with quite the opposite. Since the New Year, we have been hammered. Last weekend, we toppled Christmas's record, with nearby areas reporting up to 3 feet of the cold, fluffy stuff. With another 10-20 inches predicted for [...]
No one can fault Dave Mustaine for putting together a tour in lieu of the stillborn American Carnage trek. But as always the Megadeth frontman aims for maximum annoyance and as such his new tour is a brazen approximation of Carnage minus Slayer. As a member of Slayer, Kerry King must be distressed to find [...]

Michael Jackson's family—as well as his fans all over the world—are one step closer to getting closure after the pop star's death. Dr. Conrad Murray has been officially charged with involuntarily manslaughter for overmedicating the singer with the powerful drug Propfol. The charge carries a four year maximum prison sentence, and Murray is expected to surrender in court during his arraignment this afternoon. The Jackson family (minus Michael's children) is expected to attend . We'll keep you updated as the news breaks. [Via E! Online ]

MGMT mentioned that their new album, "Congratulations" may end up being released in April at the Grammy's. It seems like the band are confirming this with a April 13th release date. There is no official announcement, but the band has a countdown on their website , and it leads to April 13th, which is a Tuesday. Coincidence? Probably not! A moving image of the ocean heads the band's page. Possible album cover as well? They sure do love their beach/water imagery! On a seperate note, the band is playing at Coachella, as well as [...]

For this week Sunday Video i ask Ababil Ashari (a lo-fi-emo enthusiast/med school student) to curate this week video, and here we go, he shares some knowledge and his favorite videos for you. Enjoy this week theme "Emo" 01. Jimmy Eat World - "Rockstar" 2nd generation Jimmy Eat World is my absolute favorite emo band. For me, Jimmy Eat World's take on emo, especially during the Capitol years, is the most honest and unpretentious version out there. You really know what it feels like [...]

There have been loads of local benefit shows for Haiti, because a) Portland musicians have kind and giving hearts and b) We are the world; we are the children. There's another one tonight at the (World Famous) Kenton Club, one of my favorite spots to take in an adult beverage. Post-rockers the Wax Fingers will provide the some of the night's dexterous soundtrack-all you have to do is buy drinks and listen. The more drunk you get, the more money goes to those who need it. Also on the bill is singer-songwriter Gavin [...]

Another day, another list, and before you know it, it's already February. The obligatory chocolate giving holiday is just a couple of days away and everyone is seeing hearts. For our Friday's list, what better way to welcome Valentine's than to showcase some songs by people who've taken the term 'let's make beautiful music together' - literally and figuratively. Here now, is my list of songs from indie music duos who share a partnership that's more than musical - 1. Viva Voce - Mixtape=Love [...]

Sad news indeed. Definitive Jux , the premiere indie-rap record label of the noughts, is going "on hiatus," the standard euphemism for "shutting down." If you are a person of taste and distinction, you've got a couple of records from this label in your collection. In my opinion, El-P is the white Dr. Dre: a triple-genius producer (and a B-plus rapper) and incredible tastemaker who defines the boundaries of his corner of the music scene. It's a bit of an exaggeration to say that everything good in underground hip-hop over the last ten years has gone through [...]

Sometimes you're lucky enough to come across a band that borrows a bit from a bunch of other groups you love. That seems to be the case with me and Helen Earth Band . The only reason I gave these guys a listen was because I read that the former drummer for Finch, a band that I was never really crazy about to begin with (except for "Letters For You", I'll love that song forever), was at the helm of this project. I was pleasantly surprised right at the onset of "(We All) Talk With Knives", the first single [...]
David Byrne is basically the coolest man on the planet. His work with Talking Heads and Brian Eno alone mean he has honorary entry into the Musick Hall of Fame (due to open sometime in 2012, dates pending), alongside such luminaries as Michael Jackson, Prince and Fine Young Cannibals. He's teamed up with, er, Fatboy Slim (minus points for that perhaps?) to create some kind of elaborate music project based around former Philippines First Lady Imelda Marcos. Nephew say what!? [...]
