Hello faithful readers and passer bys. I am heading off to Hawaii to see one of the most inspirational personal figures in my life, my Grandmother. I haven't seen her in over 3 years and at 92, you never know when the next time you will get to see someone. Also, I have not taken a legitimate vacation in just about as long so I am doing that and will not be posting anything to this blog, or editing any new material for the show till next week when I get back to New York. I hope you miss me [...]

The older I get the more begin to realize that success is a moving target. For each success you achieve there is an insecurity waiting around the corner. Furthermore, the more successful you are the harder you have to work to remain at that level of success. Throughout his career Jim Fairchild has found a humble and "modest" way to move from one success into another, and he shows no sign of stopping. Fairchild has played with Grandaddy , Giant Sand , and most recently Modest Mouse , but in my opinion his biggest success [...]

The Persuasions The annual 5th Avenue Street Fair in Park Slope is not a cookie cutter street fair, and with lots of entertainment along the route, it's always a worthwhile day for music lovers. 5th Avenue also happens to be home to both Union Hall and Southpaw , not to mention lots of good restaurants (like V Spot ) and bars (like The Gate ). This year the fair takes place on Sunday, May 17th , and runs on 5th Ave. from Sterling [...]

In what shaped up to be a Middle East funk-fest, Miss Fairchild , Lovewhip , and Alice Russell each put a distinct spin on the genre. Miss Fairchild, a group compiled in Nantucket, delivered not limericks but similarly playful pop grooves led by front man and Prince-enthusiast Daddy Wrall. Utilizing backing tracks of beats and brass sections, the band delivered what one might call "Sunday Morning Funk," or the manner of tunes you'd listen to if you wanted to get down without getting dirty. The essentials were there: sparse electric guitar riffs, a fellas/ladies [...]

Vice-addled psych rock declares nuclear guerre on Cambridge. Rumors that they're a slouchy live won't keep us away. BLACK LIPS: Interview: Black Lips frontman Cole Alexander | Review: 200... Support indie media! Read the rest at thephoenix.com . . .
A few years back, I met Miss Fairchild from Nantucket (that sounds like the opening to a great limerick) with this outrageous track off their Ooh La La Sha Sha EP. It sounds like it just shuffled from another decade, with half-steps and then a little side lunge: Number One - Miss Fairchild I wore that song out on long runs that summer. In fact, hearing it now makes my pulse race. Lead singer Daddy Wrall [...]

Although the purported influences that converged to give rise to this saucy, bar-chord-loving, all-girl pop-punk juggernaut are all over the place (King Crimson, David Bowie, Primus?), Apple Betty remain a band of singular focus. Whether writing about the things that men don't do ("No Toilet Paper on the Roll"), involuntarily do ("Sweatpant Boner"), or do do ("I Saw a Crime"), these girls stay on message: men suck, but we kind of need them. Of the aforelisted tracks, that last one is our favorite: its harrowing tale of guys unwilling to settle down (imagine!) could be the average rock [...]
by bmac So the mixtape is late by two days. I'd like to tell you it's because we were consumed by the G-20 summit on the global economic crisis or that we spent today planting trees and giving kit kat bars to strangers. But that'd by lying. And eventhough the mixtape is late because one of us got too wasted to function for 36 hours, the mix is here now. And QC don't lie. Grab all the tracks at once with the zip - mixtape [...]
by kevin diamond Anyone else feeling funky in this oddly warm Autumn? I don't mean funky like skunked beer, but funky like Pants Off Dance Off. If your November surprise seems to be the need to dance, I've got just the band. Miss Fairchild hail from my home town of Nantucket, and they're essentialy the former-whaling-capital-of- the-world's house band. They just self-released a new EP, Won't Be Your Kept Woman , and it's more of the same Earth-shattering, house-quaking, James Brown [...]

I've mentioned the New England pop act Miss Fairchild in these pages before , but somehow my particular influence hasn't rocketed them into the fame stratosphere quite yet. In an effort to promote their just-out (and quite good) Won't Be Your Kept Woman EP, the band has released a mixtape by occasional member Sammy Bananas. It mixes the band's own music with a ton of thoroughly enjoyable tracks by other artists (Prince, George Michael, Janet Jackson), and it's so far been successful at pushing back the invading forces of winter gloom. Plus, the mix features a snippet [...]

Wednesday at Cafe du Nord, The Aimless Never Miss will celebrate the release of their new album Eponomous . They will be joined by the fantastic Harbours and new kids All Smiles , a project based in Portland with some familiar names to indie fans. Most notably, Jim Fairchild of Grandaddy fronts the project, which is also comprised of Solon Bixler of Great Northern, Nik Freitas of Mystic Valley Band, Joe Plummer of Modest Mouse and Black Heart Procession and Mike Cresswell. The sound [...]

I will be attending Monolith Festival next weekend, and I am excited about the festival's recent addition of Portland, Oregon's Hockey. I love The Rapture, and Hockey's sound is eerily similar at times. I know that this Portland group must have heard The Rapture's 2006 album "Pieces of the People We Love" the opening track "Too Fake" on Hockey's "Mind Chaos" patterns itself directly after "Whoo! Alright, Yeah... Uh Huh" on The Rapture's album. Fortunately, for both Hockey and our ears the album diverges from this point on. If you like Ghostland Observatory, The Rapture, Miss Fairchild or !!! I [...]

Soweit [...]
