After a lot of careful thinking, I have decided to leave the band. Having played with Hookah for almost 19 years, it was an extremely difficult decision, made even more difficult by my love for my band mates and our music. Naturally I'll be coming back to sit in periodically, but after New Year's Eve you'll be enjoying a new bass player. It has been an amazing privilege to spend so many years playing with this band, and I'll always be grateful for the experiences I've had along the way. I've gotten to travel all over the world to [...]

Justin will be heading out on the road to Festival 8 this morning, so I'll be taking over full blogging duties for the weekend (weee!). Hopefully, we'll get some updates from him along the way, but knowing the chaotic nature of the festival environment, I don't think we'll set our expectations too high. For now, here are few Phish-related links and updates to get the day started right... Did this actually happen on Conan last night? Slightly surreal, and just plain silly: [...]

It's been an interesting and travel-laden week for me, and I won't bore you with all the details, but since Wednesday, I've driven to Baltimore, flown to Kansas City through Detroit and then back to Baltimore through Chicago, arriving from beautiful weather in the midwest to miserable, near-winter wet weather conditions on the east coast, all to see Sunset Rubdown live. Well, not entirely, but due to a work conference that I couldn't miss (but did cut out early from, and got in trouble for), I missed SR in Manhattan Friday night, so I re-arranged my schedule to [...]

Hold on, as we are about to get all meta-analytical up on this piece. Here are the top 10 best songs about writing. These are the musical musings on the act of making something out of nothing. The tunes about the process of taming the ethereal and tapping into that great big atmosphere of inspiration. Whether it's an attack on grammar Nazis, the beast of burden that is writer's block, or word play and verb flexing put into melody, these are the songs that give us insight into the sometimes self-indulgent struggle that is putting pen to paper. Write on. [...]

When you read this, I will be in Mississippi with my college roommate Jon. We will be preparing ourselves mentally and physically for the clash of two collegiate football titans, Ole Miss and Alabama. Should Mississippi emerge victorious, look for me on ESPN; I'll be the drunk riding the goalpost to the ground. Jon and I graduated from Bowling Green State University (in Ohio, for those of you farther afield) and only had tentative brushes with serious collegiate athletics. Bowling Green won the NCAA hockey title in 1984 (long before we attended) and the hockey program was a big draw [...]

I kind of lucked into this interview. I had seen the name Stephen Kellogg come up in my email a time or two, but I didn't really know too much about the guy and his band Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers, so I didn't pay too much attention. It took a friend at a concert in Iowa sending me text upon text of: "This is the greatest band ever," "OMG. Best live show ever," and then "I will kick you if you do not interview this band or do something for them. So amazing." [...]
Consign your weekend to the care of Donnybrook Writing Academy, as we direct your attention to Jewish hip-hop artists from Southwestern Ohio and a left coast foursome with enough indie cred to buy a round for the entire Larimer Lounge. Fri, Oct 9: Why? with Dark, Dark, Dark When Why? front man Yoni Wolf and his band released Alopecia just last year, the Cincinnati-based trio earned heaps of well-deserved praise for the album's cross-pollination of lo-fi and dead pan hip-hop. When Why? swings through Denver on Friday night, it will [...]

When I listen to 'One Foot In The Ether', the second album from Austin's Band Of Heathens it makes me want whiskey in the worst way. And I mean that in the best way possible. Not sure if this is Americana, country, alt-country, or whatever, I just know that I love it. Sweet slide guitar and songs about not getting the girl and about having trouble paying the bills. Plus, besides all of their great original tuness on this record, they cover one of my all time favorites - Gillian Welch's "Look At Miss Ohio" - which as an [...]

Miss MPMF weekend? Feeling like getting out and seeing live music this weekend? Well you have an opportunity as this weekend just up the road in Dayton, Ohio another big night of live music is planned. The Dayton Music Festival kicks off this Saturday October 3rd and in addition to some great Dayton bands we love like Lab Partners and Smug Brothers taking the stage, Cincinnati is very well represented as well. If you head up the fest, you can catch Cincinnati acts like Eat Sugar, The Lions Rampant, The Seedy Seeds, [...]

I've been spending a lot of time recently combing through Pitchfork's list of the top 500 songs of the decade, but one thing that has annoyed me is that I can't find a site that actually lists all 500 songs on one page. I'm tired of having to scroll through page after page. So, I'm doing it myself. Here's the complete list, republished merely as a reference. Go to www.pitchfork.com to see the full presentation with song reviews, artwork, and audio clips. 500. The Big Pink - "Velvet" 499. N.E.R.D. - "Run to the [...]

The Band of Heathens is a quintet that came together when three of its members shared a residency as solo acts at an Austin venue. The cadre of country-tinged songwriters garnered big buzz on the Americana music scene after releasing a few raucous live albums and then, last year, a self-titled debut full-length. Proving as prolific as they are talented, The Band of Heathens is back with a second studio album, One Foot in the Ether . It opens strong, with "L.A. County Blues," a tribute to Hunter S. Thompson that offers the very appropriate lyric, "We're burning down [...]

Austin-style country, rock, folk, gospel, blues and soul The Band of Heathens' second studio album (their fourth overall, having started their recording career with two live releases) is a big step forward. The artistic palette of last year's eponymous release is carried forward here, but the result sounds less like a collage of influences and more like a band that's discovered its own groove. The twin inspirations of Little Feat and the Band remain particularly strong, but as channeled spirits rather than imitated sounds. With three singer-songwriters contributing a dozen originals to this self-produced [...]
Beirut i miss you, la faute à Calvin Harris et Metronomy. Mais me voilà de retour. Bad Veins is [...]

I get a lot of music sent to me every week. I mean a lot of music. I get submissions through e-mail, regular mail, Reviewshine... I even get packages left for me at the radio station. It's a lot of music to wade through. The problem is that I also have two jobs, a wife, a dog, and a new house to take care of. I don't often have time to listen to everything I receive or write extensively about everything that I like. That's why I'm taking some time today to clear out my inbox and share [...]
This community's been quite lately. I have a slight excuse - my laptop power cord severed, so that computer is dead and all my music lost until I replace the defective part. I got a new MacBook Pro in June *pets*, but have just now found the time to update my new computer and, with some help from a friend, to rebuild my iTunes library. Behold the results! All of these come from my 5+ hour work-in-progress Driving Mix. Grad school 9 hours from home = bad idea, but a great need for catchy music. Let [...]
Like a Version is a segment on the Australian radio station Triple J. It was created by Mel Bampton as part of the Mel in the Morning program. Currently the segment pops up whenever artists are available and willing to do it, though mainly on the Breakfast show. It involves Australian, and more recently, international artists playing live, acoustic versions of some of their favourite songs. This segment's popularity has led to, so far, the release of four compilation CDs. Samples of the 4 Vol Set: Vol 1 Damien Rice - "When Doves Cry"* (Prince) [...]
