We were thumbing through the Buzzgrinder microfiche archives, and we found this article from Matt DeBenedictis that never made it up, extolling the virtues of Shellac 's Terraform on its 10th anniversary. Even though that was a while back, we can't deprive the loyal Buzzgrinderers from this bit of nostalgia. So have at it. It's been 10 years since Shellac released their second LP, Terraform , but nothing changes about Shellac over the years. They are still juggernauts that exist between the lines of noise rock [...]

Boston post-punks Mission of Burma headlined Bowery Ballroom on Friday night and delivered an epic performance. The set included songs from 1981's Signals, Calls and Marches EP, 1982's Vs. , 2009's The Sound The Speed The Light , and more. There may have been people in the audience who would argue that Burma is one of the most influential bands of the last 30 years, and although they appeared apathetic, my guess is that they left pretty satisfied. More excitingl, Freshkills were the openning band, and they debuted [...]

Wednesday, February 3, 2010 If you live in Austin you've probably heard of Matador Records new compilation album, Casual Victim Pile - Austin 2010. You're probably also aware there's a three day release party at Beerland starting tomorrow night. But, mostly importantly, have you actually listened to the album yet? Well, if you haven't, trust me when I say that you're missing out! Before we delve into my favorite tracks though, let's explore the back story a bit, shall we? The man behind the album meant [...]

[photo by nyctaper] The second of Mission of Burma's two nights at Bowery was covered for nyctaper by Acidjack. Our recording of the first night is [ here ]. Acidjack reports: "I have to admit that this was my first time seeing Mission of Burma , which is one of those concert-going omissions that I should be embarrassed about. My first experience, with them playing a second night to a packed Bowery Ballroom , was a great one. It is truly an honor to see [...]

[ photo by nyctaper ] Its hard for me to believe that its been exactly two years since I last saw Mission of Burma . On that night in Brooklyn, the band performed their standard high intensity volume show which we caught from the floor - my ears were ringing for days. Last night at Bowery , from our safe perch at the balcony rail, the sonic blast was less intense and our vantage point permitted a close examination of the work of the fourth member of the band, sound tech/tape wizard [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Since reforming in 2002 after nearly two decades off, Mission of Burma has released three albums, many songs from which were played Friday night at New York City's Bowery Ballroom. "You guys have been patient, listening to a bunch of old farts' new songs," drummer Peter Prescott said during the encore, just before the legendary Boston post-punk trio -- or quartet, if you count tape manipulator Bob Weston, who works behind the scenes -- bashed out its best-known tune, the [...]

Recommended Show: SATURDAY, JANUARY 30, 2010 DINOWALRUS & JAVELIN @ HOUSE OF YES 342 Maujer St Brooklyn, NY 11206 $10, 8PM I've never heard of the venue before, but if the lineup includes Javelin and Dinowalrus , tonight's show at House of Yes should make it notable. The venue seems to be an " art space " off the Grand Street L train stop in Brooklyn. Also on the bill for the evening include Shark? , Aval Luna , and The Shivers . Evan Dando [...]

What was once an inconceivable notion - that Mission of Burma , one of Boston's most influential if short-lived punk bands, would someday return to the stage for a celebrated second act - has, amazingly, become a regular, if not exactly routine, occurrence. Since reuniting in 2002 (with Bob Weston replacing sound effects/tape loop guru Martin Swope), Burma has been back longer than its original '79-'83 slash-and-burn across the sky lasted. The band has released three albums during this span - two more than the old Burma managed before flaming out after guitarist Roger Miller developed [...]

------------------------------ ------------------------------ ------------------------------ --- So finally here is my official best of music list for 2009 and it's the oldsters who have kicked ass across the board. Even though we kick-off the set with The XX there were two other newish groups that made it on the radar; first being a band from Mass called The Young Leaves and another Fungi Girls which features a bunch of 16-18 olds from Texas. Comeback/reunion shows in our top list events of 2009 are The Jesus Lizard. The other was Prosolar Mechanics who played their first show in almost 8 [...]
