Upon listening, you will hear a full band on about half the tracks, as he enlisted the help of a few buddies as his live backing band who ended up sticking around filling out the sound. It makes sense that Mist and Mast's lead contributor describes his album as piecemeal when his reviews garner comparisons to bands from REM to ELO. Mist And Mast Action At A Distance Oakland Petting Zoo [2009] Fire Drill Review: Mist And Mast sophomore album Action At A Distance is an expansion of their self-titled debut as it represents more of a "bands" work, then just founder Jason Lakis. On their debut, Lakis recorded and played all the instruments himself before assembling a touring band, while Action At A Distance still includes solo recordings but for [...]

Courage! What makes a king out of a slave? Courage! What makes the flag on the mast to wave? Courage! What makes the elephant charge his tusk in the misty mist, or the dusky dusk? What makes the muskrat guard his musk? Courage! What makes the sphinx the seventh wonder? Courage! What makes the dawn come up like thunder? Courage! What makes the Hottentot so hot? This is something of a spectral take on the Gothic folk mini-genre, crammed full of the sort of Brothers Grimm meets the darkest of American folk tales kind of imagery which we've come to expect from this sort of thing. I've pigeonholed it fairly mercilessly there, but I don't mean to imply that you can nail this EP to the mast with a single glib sentence, because there is more to it than that. It's only four songs long and each song has its own character. The first track, Hand of Doom, perhaps fits the above description the [...]
India Habitat Centre has been welcoming more rock bands into its diverse calendar of events. The YP (Youth Parliament) Foundation is an NGO that provides, among other things, a creative outlet in the forms of art and music, for slum children in Delhi. This inaugural Blending Spectrum Festival was an evening to celebrate the good work done by the organization. In addition to the documentaries, paintings and photography on display, the audience was treated to a small but healthy dose of Delhi rock. Music Basti's five band-members are also volunteers with the YP's program for children of the [...]
Don't ya just hate it when you stumble across a band and find out that they broke up like years ago? Yeah, I know! First off you feel out of touch because you didn't hear of them prior, then you feel bad as you are now living in someone else's past. Listening to what once was you could say. One such band is Oakland, California's "The Red Thread" who disbanded in 2007. The band was formerly made up of Jason Lakis (guitars, vocals), Mike Schmiedt (bass), and Dan Martin (drums). They had 3 albums through out their 5 [...]

This month's mixtape is Part Two of our "Best of the Bay Area" mix that we started last month (find Part One here). We had set out to make a single mix that encapsulated the local scene, but there's just too much depth of talent in San Francisco to reduce down to an 80-minute primer. While last month's mix featured the best of the local indie-rock and indie-pop scene, this month's installment focuses mostly on slower, more folk-influenced choices. This batch features several mainstays of the San Francisco scene — including Mark Kozelek [...]
