Magda will be the next artist to compile a mix for the Fabric series. The Polish-born, Detroit-raised artist is the third woman to join the Fabric ranks, following on from previous installments by DJ Heather and Ellen Allien, and will see the DJ showcase her micro-mixing approach that fans have previously been able to sample on her She's A Dancing Machine compilation. The city of Detroit has been key to Magda's musical progression, as that was where she first met and befriended Richie Hawtin and Run Stop Restore partner Marc Houle during the late '90s. [...]
The Jaguar Club is a trio residing in Brooklyn NY who formed shortly before New Years Eve 2006. The band has released 2 EP's of danceable pop tunes and played shows up and down the Eastern seaboard from Maine to Florida. At home they have been thrilled to play with some very fine bands including: The Duke Spirit, The Cinematics, Scissors For Lefty, Mobius Band, Pela, Bear Hands, The Shaky Hands, Love Of Diagrams and many more. 2008 primarily found the band in a barn in upstate New York writing and recording their first full-length album at [...]

My buddy bro Jason Forrest developed this iPhone application called Star 6 , it's totally fun and even more. You can mess around with samples with it, which looks way more fun than twisting some nobs, and you can also use it on a professional level. JF aka DJ Donna Summer is creating tracks with it like a madman lately. Check out the video and drop by at the Star 6 showcase this Friday at Jacki Terasse. It's free, it's a nice location, it's going to be chill, it's FUN!, there's a bunch of performances, I'll be playing [...]

An indie band who got into dance in a big way, and who featured Denise Johnson on vocals. Although not prolific, The Joy left some amazing remixes but are especially noteworthy for their epic single "Shine". Their website says: Over the past few years I received many emails asking about the history and fate of the band The Joy. After returning many emails I thought it would be a great idea to document what was an amazing experience for us all, from the formative Siren Records demos to [...]

photos by Ryan Muir At what can only be described as one of the worst live shows I've ever seen, Das Racist took the stage of Public Assembly Sunday night (8/30) (around 11:30pm) (four hours after the Grizzly Bear show had ended right down the street) and proceeded to play 3 or 4 or was it 5 songs with an extended Wesleyan-related lineup. The jokey trio that is Das Racist already permanently feature [...]

(pick up this disgustingly sexy, limited edition flyer by ISO50 ) Well, whoever wrote this email made my life a lot easier: As Ghostly International hits the 10-year mark, they're throwing a series of parties in select location across the globe. Having torn the roofs off Los Angeles, San Francisco, Detroit, Miami¹s Winter Music Conference, and Detroit's Movement festival, they now aim their music cannons at Chicago. The evening's bill includes music/design phenomenon Tycho, melodic electro legend Solvent, local industrial legends Kill Memory Crash, and Eliot Lipp's Dark Party. A DJ set from [...]
Here are a few shows that I missed posting before. Laziness? Probably. It's not all the shows from July because one was terrible and one had technical problems, but it's a little bit of what you've missed. Enjoy!((Excuse the ugly formatting. I can never make things show up the way they should in wordpress.)) July 1: 60 minutes, starting with the Michael Jackson tribute! July 15: This is a full show- not bad either tracklist after the jump July 22: [...]

With the possible exception of ferreting through Dad's closet in search of his mythical porno stash, nothing is as overtly masculine as Heavy Metal. It's music by men for men, the natural outgrowth of the "Get Rid Of Slimy GirlS" club, the place where fancypants musings on love and loss are usurped by heady ballads about pillaging, nuclear war, and how kickass dragons are. Critics call metal "subliterary" and "banal." Fans found those critics and got biz-zay with some truncheons. Now, admittedly, this is the narrow view. Bands [...]

I gotta tell you, and trust me, the irony of this is not lost on me, but I hate it when people complain about how awful they have it when they don't have any idea how good they DO have it. I mean, until the day comes that you utter the words "I'm sorry, I have to cancel my appointment tomorrow because I'm having a brain scan done," then you don't get to complain. I work at a cancer rehab clinic and lately we've been treating some really sick people. People who [...]

Despite having immersed ourselves deeply in the epileptic recesses of experimental, do-what-you-like seizure rock as of late (see Teeth!!!, The Mae Shi, Danan. . . ), this unassuming gig probably takes the catnip-laced cake for most freakish show we have ever attended. The basement of Club 229 is not large by any means, but the dozen-odd people in the crowd don't even make an effort to populate the space.
Aside from three great shows tonight, there's only a couple of standout shows to me this week. Which is kinda fine... being the first official week of summer and all, maybe we should all be outside drinking somewhere instead of stuck in a club. My picks in bold . Monday 5/25 9:30 Club: The National [sold out] Black Cat (back): Mobius Strip, The Jet Age, The Wax Standard Iota: The Beanstalk Library, In Technicolor, Typefighter [...]

In music, much like many things in life, appreciation comes with time. Last spring, when Editors and Mobius Band toured together, a line existed between them. Fortunately, they had music in common, so Editors swam through the collection of Mobius Band and vice versa. By the end of touring the groups had built a strong friendship, and with many listens of MB's latest album Heaven still ringing in their ears, the superbly-influential Editors decided to endorse the New England group in the motherland. [...]
