Photo by Joe Mangat . Well, after a trip up to Portland, Oregon and a bout with a still-lingering illness, I'm finally back up in this. Perfect timing too, because there's a lot goin' on right now. Most notably, you can now stream a song from the most exciting effort still waiting to see an official release this year - Animal Collective 's Fall Be Kind . "Graze" opens this stunning EP with a languid interplay of sounds and soaring vocal trade-off between Avey Tare and Panda Bear before transforming into [...]

Festival goers were greeted by by warm temperatures Saturday, the first day of the 4th annual Fun Fun Fun Fest. Something notable and worth mentioning was the layout of the Orange and Black Stages. A huge platform, divided equally into halves expedited setup time between acts. The first act we caught was the Royal Bangs , a poppy indie orchestration permeated by electro beats. The quintet who hails from Knoxville, Tennessee recorded their full-length debut "We Breed Champions," independently and released on Audio Eagle records May of last year. Their fun songs had hipsters bobbing [...]

Hearing Captain Love made me want to HUP-two-three-four, stand at attention and snap a million salutes because it's so rare for me to take such pleasure from a rock album with pop persuasions. Mock Orange present a rare batch of influences before the listener and DARE him/her to deal with it, up to and including: A resemblance, in both the lead and back-up vocals, to How it Feels / Rising [...]

Never let it be said that A Free Man doesn't welcome opposing points of view. As the Georgia Bulldogs head north to Knoxville for a date with the Tennessee Volunteers this Saturday, I've brought the enemy to my bosom and given them a chance to speak. For the three years I was at the University of Georgia, Tennessee beat our football team every year. They were the only school to accomplish that feat. Even the vile Florida Gators fell to the Dawgs once during my time at the University. After having my heart [...]

by Dave "Scout" Tafoya Welcome to the cabaret of Joel Gibb. The Berlin-based frontman of the Toronto-based musical collective, The Hidden Cameras , has found what he likes best and made a highly efficient machine out of it. What does he like? Hooks. Hooks so theatrical they border on kitsch. Switching between showmanship mixed with operatic presentation of otherwise ordinary (if splendid) tunes, soft inward-looking balladeering, and Pleasure Principle-inspired new wave, Origin:Orphan , The Cameras' fifth album, finds them delivering non-stop niceties, whether you want them or not. The songs [...]

Having a vampire series without a cult following is like finding salvation in a strip club: it's not likely to occur. But HBO's Golden-Globe*-winning megadrama True Blood has proved in just 1¾'s of a season that it's worth the fanfare. Their next spill at becoming a nationwide sensation? Creating a Tru-Blood drink of course. For a measly $96 (and $10 for shipping,) you can order a twenty-four pack of this delicious mock plasma n' hemoglobin. Indulge as you and your significant other feel the effects of the V rushing through [...]

Catching up here with some purchase highlights from May and June and I know I'm late posting this! There's been so many records coming out that it's tough keeping up (and I'm on a budget now). After Michael Jackson Died by Sean Michaels who writes Said The Gramophone I After Michael Jackson died the first thing he learned was quiet. His spirit slipped lightly from his body It was as light as he had dreamed of being for years like diamonds, grass pollen, the dust that sits on mirrored surfaces. His spirit slipped like steam from a kettle's spout. Briefly he thought of his grandmother, and he wondered if he would see her soon, now that he was dead, now that his spirit was being lifted [...]

Michael Jackson - "Billie Jean (demo)" . I After Michael Jackson died the first thing he learned was quiet. His spirit slipped lightly from his body It was as light as he had dreamed of being for years like diamonds, grass pollen, the dust that sits on mirrored surfaces. His spirit slipped like steam from a kettle's spout. Briefly he thought of his grandmother, and he wondered if he would see her soon, now that he was dead, now that his spirit was being lifted lightly; and as he saw the doctor from [...]
A couple weeks ago I talked about the concept of the album in this space, and somebody by the handle of "Knatterjak" shared the tidbit that "The EP is the future". That got me thinking – is the EP the new album? Is orange really the new pink? EPs, loosely defined, are short albums. Strictly defined, Extended Play records are records made up of 4 songs (plus alternative versions) or 25 minutes of music. This strict definition, however, is often subverted – specifically through artists adding the letters "EP" to [...]

Mock Orange is a band I've been sitting on for months now, so it's high time I've posted them. The album these songs are from, Captain Love , did not manage to capture my attention as a whole, but songs like World Of Machines certainly did. Undeniably catchy and slightly odd at the same time, you'd find yourself singing along if the lyrics made more sense. Song In D isn't nearly as catchy, but one song of musical herpes (in a good way, I swear) is enough for any album. From [...]

It was just a few days ago that we were getting excited about Leo Zero 's refix of the late great Freddy Mercury and here we are back again, this time with a brand new track from the man. Joining the dots between punk funk and acid house, 'Let's Go' serves as the perfect intro for the forthcoming A Mountain of One man's solo album 'Acid Life'. If the rest of the album matches up to this then we're looking at a stone cold classic. Leo Zero - Let's [...]

Syracuse fans got potentially devastating news yesterday when the school announced that three starters off this year's Sweet 16 team -- sophomore Jonny Flynn and juniors Eric Devendorf and Paul Harris -- will declare early for the NBA draft. The news reports emphasized that Flynn has not hired an agent and plans to explore his draft position before deciding whether or not to come back. Devendorf and Harris have also reportedly not hired agents, but their chances of coming back seem less likely (even as Eric supposedly told a group of 12-year-olds at a banquet Wednesday night that he was [...]
