Citay are a San Francisco based band that I've recently come across and enjoy. Check two tunes, "Mirror Kisses" and "Careful With That Hat , " out below, as well as some upcoming tour dates. The new record, Dream Get Together , is out 1/26 via Dead Oceans . Tracklist [...]

Dream Get Together #1: Hildegard von Bingen , Lhasa , and Patsy Cline come down from heaven. They choose a glorious chapel with sunlight streaming in and we sing for hours, a cappella style. Meanwhile Charlie Chaplin does stunts with the Catholic paraphenalia (wafers, candlesticks, crosses.) Rokia Traore comes in to sing and play guitar, Barrington Levy calls from outside--he's brought the Barrett brothers as rhythm section. Fela brings his sax. We dance. -MERRILL GARBUS, tUnE-YarDs [...]

Vancouver band The Abramson Singers have signed to White Whale Records to release their upcoming self-titled album on February 2. The band was born when singer-songwriter-guitarist Leah Abramson got tendonitis in her wrist. Unable to write songs on guitar, Leah borrowed an 8-track and started recording a capella vocal pieces under the name "The Abramson Singers." Now healed and playing her guitar again, Leah formed a band under the same moniker, playing her indie-folk-noir with some of Vancouver's brightest young musicians and singers. The first Abramson Singers album will be released in [...]
The o.g.'s on White Whale (featuring members of Octoberman and The Mohawk Lodge) were voted #26 of the Top 50 Vancouver Bands of the Decade. Read the Discorder article HERE .

On November 20th I went to Cafe Dekcuf. Three acts were playing and its theme was mostly male solo singers. Well make that two and half since Mohawk Lodge did had a backing band. Also playing was Male Nurse and Chris Page. I was kind of under the weather that night. Overall it was a nice show. Male Nurse was interesting to see live as always. Chris Page who was nominated for Best New Artist by Ottawa Xpress's Best Of 2009 Poll. He put on [...]

As you probably know, former Be Your Own Pet frontwoman Jemina Pearl is making good use of her queen bee vocal sass appeal on a solo album, Break It Up , which dropped last Tuesday on Thurston Moore 's Ecstatic Peace label. Still haven't given it a shot? Perhaps this new single will convince you. Featuring razor-sharp and polished production from John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr.), Pearl has no problem letting her snarly defiance shine through in the throwdown "Looking For Trouble." Jemina Pearl - "Looking For [...]

Fuck! I just reported today how The For Carnation is playing their first show in, what, seven years or so at the Speed Museum's Art After Dark event, then I realized that's also the same night that Siltbreeze patriots Blues Control and locals Sapat bust brains across town. OMG MULTITASKING LOL. Ya know, it is possible that The For Carnation will play a lot earlier than the general 10 p.m. start times at Lisa's, so you may be able to do both. But then again, perhaps you might want to show up to the [...]
John Hancock and Brian Robertson of Awesome New Republic had a plan. They were going to release new material in a three part series titled, Rational Geographic . Volume I was released this past April for free via torrent sites. Honor Roll Music , who released the album , even went as far as setting up an advertising campaign on the torrent search engine site, ISOHunt . Volume II was released in July with Volume III planned for October. Then god got in the [...]
Phew boy! This week's new release calendar is overflowing with goodies. I'll have to admit to not having heard all of these in their entirety. And honestly, when you're hit with this many releases at the same time, it's impossible to really absorb them all, even if you do make the time to listen through each one. But this week is definitely chock full of albums I've been eagerly anticipating. The Raveonettes latest, In and Out of Control , has finally arrived. What can [...]

No, not that kind of hard drugs, jeez, what kind of site do you think we're running here? We're talking instead about Jeffrey Lee and his conceptual rock opera, Hard Drugs , a 13-song double album executed with help from some of Vancouver's best and brightest. Indeed, Hard Drugs (the album) boasts contributions from members of Blood Meridian, Black Mountain, Lightning Dust, Pink Mountaintops, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Limb Lifter, Bughouse 5, Bend Sinister, Fan Death, The Mohawk Lodge and Bison, among many others, and now the whole twisted indie rock opera/concept album/gala [...]

With the release of their second record on ANTI- next week, Islands are set to hit the road to spread love, valour, compassion and a busload of wanderlust across these United States and, ugh, Canada. Nick Diamonds, freshly reunited with former Islands and the Unicorns co-conspirator Jamie Thompson, better known as J'aime Tambeur, will bring Vapours to the people during a six week tour, which finds them headlining dates, as well as playing shows with Psychedelic Furs and the Happy Mondays. Yes, the Happy Mondays . While we can't confirm whether or not [...]

They'll be headlining most of the tour, but breaking from those dates briefly in the tour for 12 dates supporting the Psychedelic Furs and the reunited Happy Mondays. [...]

At first, I thought this might grate. But I had that same feeling about Be Your Own Pet, and they definitely grew on me (though they were still a little too Le Tigre meets Beth Ditto to listen to an entire album's worth). This has, however, grown on me much faster. Like, instantly. Just listen to the entire song once through, and I'm pretty sure you'll be addicted. She capitalizes on that old musical tradition of contradiction - singing something kind of awful in such a sweet way that no one notices. 'Oh I, I hate people/But I, I like [...]

Dead Oceans (the awesome label affiliated with the Secretly Canadian/Jagjaguwar family) is preparing a 2010 release for White Hinterland's new record. The band, which is now a duo comprised of Casey Dienel and Shawn Creeden, will be taking to the road for a good chunk of October of this year, so we hope to get a bit of a taste of the new album. Check out all dates below, including a performance at Bruar Falls in Brooklyn on October 15. White Hinterland tour dates: 10/01/09 - Seattle, WA - Sunset Tavern 10/02/09 [...]
Junkies, johns and love on a bare mattress don't seem like common themes for an alt-country rock opera, but Jeffrey Lee has combined them nonetheless in "Hard Drugs," which released today. For the project, Lee enlisted talent from bands such as Blood Meridian, Black Mountain, Lightning Dust, Pink Mountaintops, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Limb Lifter, Bughouse 5, Bend Sinister, Fan Death, The Mohawk Lodge and Bison. It will be performed at New York's Bowery Electric on Sept. 24. This video for the track "Bad Ideas (Don't Give Up)" [...]
