For ramblings on how I came to compile this list go here . And for commentary on previous selections: [ #50-46 ] [ #45-41 ] [ #40-36 ] [ #35-31 ] [ #30-26 ] 25. Kid A - Radiohead (2000) While I completely understand my own enthusiasm for this album, I can't say that I really get why everyone else loves it so much. I've noticed that it's already topped some other 'best of the decade' [...]

This, the second three-disc set in a series, features recordings from the Mother's Best radio programs. In the early 1950s, Hank Williams could be heard performing every weekday morning on radio stations all across the southern United States. These 15-minute "morning shows" were pre-recorded in Nashville, initially broadcast on WSM (also home to the Grand Ole Opry radio programs) and sponsored by Mother's Best Flour and Feed. 143 of the songs Williams recorded for these broadcasts survive, and last year, Time Life Entertainment released 54 of those songs in the first...

The Modern Skirts play three shows in our area this week. Please take this chance to catch these guys live if you can. ...at least according to NPR listeners . Check it out after the jump, then read and listen to the whole All Songs Considered piece HERE . I've really enjoyed reading all these "decade-end" lists so far, and in my opinion this list seems to come closest to accurately reflecting the decade in music. If you're interested, you can also find a running list of such lists at largehearted boy . Check 'em out and see what made the decade in music for everyone. Here's NPRs list of "The Decade's 50 Most Important Recordings": [...]

From their recent album Signal Morning , this is Athens, GA's Circulatory System with 'Round Again'. "After the split of the Olivia Tremor Control, songwriter W. Cullen Hart's first step was to create the Circulatory System. Featuring members of the former Olivias and other notable Elephant 6 luminaries, the Circulatory System's self titled first album is an exploration of the larger and the smaller, the here and the far away, and the now and the forever. Seven and a half years in the [...]

New music from Freddie Gibbs in the form of "The Wrong One," produced by Buckwild and a beat also used for Beanie's "The Ghetto." But you already know Gibbs' version is solely his, as he recounts an autobiographical tale. Based on reality, the events depicted in the track resulted in our Midwest Malcolm being left with a scar above his left eye. Download - Freddie Gibbs - "The Wrong One" (Prod. by Buckwild) But that's only part of why we're here [...]

Nippy In The Shade mp3 Maxwell Panther (demo for Sound is a Place EP) hop over to his bandcamp.com page and pay-what-you-will for this cool little EP Lo-fi, lo-fi, lo-fi, lo-fi, lo-fi, lo-fi, lo-fi.... That's what greets you when you hit Maxwell Panther's MySpace page . And unlike many (if not most) of the new music that gets labeled as lo-fi, his stuff really is lo-fi. It's just his guitar and him. Sometimes he turns the reverb up a bit, sometimes the distortion [...]

The United States has the largest prison population in the world—yes, even larger than China, a country whose population is much larger than the population of the United States. Why? Why should the richest country in the world have the largest number of convicts in the world? Is crime endemic to capitalism? Are prison an inevitable byproduct of democracy? I know this is an unorthodox discussion of music but my point is that all music is rooted in a social context and in the case of prison work songs the context is much deeper than simply some songs [...]

Regular readers may recall that I first fell in love with the powerful, confessional Americana folk of Signature Sounds artist Caroline Herring after last year's Lantana , a tour de force concept album of sorts which evoked a broad set of southern women's voices struggling with their own claims to power and the lack thereof. As we wrote last month on the cusp of its release , Herring's newest album, Golden Apples of the Sun , is a stunner, too, and I'm happy to report that it's garnering the attention it deserves, [...]

This track can be found on their 2004 release, "Morning Star". The band began as a project between Ulf and Jo in Oslo, Norway in the winter of 2000-01. I'm surprised that I've only made it out to the Bridge School Benefit once in 2002. But at least it was a good one. Ryan Adams did a set, Tenacious D performed, Foo Fighters played a set, James Taylor was there, and the highlight for me was that Thom Yorke did a solo set as well. Although, I'm disappointed I never discovered a bootleg of Ryan Adams performance from that night, but I am delighted that there are a great recordings of both of Thom Yorke's sets. He played Everything In Its Right Place on a [...]

Armed with a prodigious vocabulary, synchronism with nature and magically potent songwriting skill, Laura Veirs has the cutest little untarnished, no-nonsense voice that grabs the ears and tugs the heart for entrance, like an irresistible, wide-eyed child gently begging entry to your lap, book and blanket in tow. That first tug instantly unveils the opening of a thirsty vessel inside the fortunate listener. Once seated, Veirs' pure and innocent voice, in concert with sonorous arrangements, melts to a delightful stream of flowing mead, equal parts comfort and enchantment - a stream you'll find yourself wishing would never end. [...]
Whether you want to admit it or not New Jersey bands tend to fit a particular sound for the most part, luckily The Black Hollies give the Garden State some diversity when it comes to rock n' roll. The Jersey City quaret have just released their 3rd LP Softly Towards the Light , out on Ernest Jenning Recordings and is already picking up steam. Justin Angelo Morey, singer and bassist of The Black Hollies was nice enough to answer some questions for us regarding their new record, touring and the history of the group. [...]

With the economy in a crunch, American Idol creator and 19 Recordings bigwig Simon Fuller has dusted off his thinking cap and is sending Kris Allen, Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta on the stage together once more. Records don't just sell themselves these days, after all. Ryan Seacrest announced the Ryan, Rock My Town contest this morning, wherein fans of the Season 8 Idol finalists basically have to go to Seacrest's site and demand that the threesome come play a gig on their turf. The city with the most [...]

In a huge shocker this morning, "RadarOnline" released some more recordings of Dina Lohan talking about Lindsay. She mentions that she and Heath Ledger "were very, very close" and that she didn't want to see Lindsay going down the same path. Earlier today, Michael confirmed the news on his Twitter page. He said, "Yes, my daughter was dating Heath Ledger at the time of his death" and "it all went downhill from there…" [...]

Toronto An interesting, exciting double-billing of electro bands, Toronto's Woodhands and Junior Boys , originally from Hamilton, stopped in at Toronto's Lee's Palace Friday night. Woodhands' energetic, in-your-face electro-pop is a guaranteed party starter; Junior Boys are much more about sexy grooviness. To Woodhands, you jump and scream. Junior Boys call for more restrained behaviour (at least in public spaces). I arrived just shy of 10:30pm. A DJ was on stage amid smoke and the place was already buzzing. And then [...]
Classical violinist Joshua Bell is, much like his treasured instrument, one of a kind. Not only is he an esteemed performer in all classical circles, but something of a pop culture phenomenon. In his new record, Bell recreates the magic of performing with a room full of talented friends by producing a string of duets as diverse but uniform as the colors of the evening sky. In At Home With Friends , Bell gathers an impressive group of comrades made over a period of 20 years – beginning with an orchestral [...]
