The following is a four part 8+ series based upon songs from the film 'Children of Men', the film itself, and the writing of Jorge Luis Borges. All of the songs featured here are originally from the 'Children of Men' soundtrack. This series was originally published sequentially over a four week period and has been collected here to allow you to read the entire story in one place, in order. Bright Giant "s/t" EP The Des Moines, Iowa based Josh Davis Band decided to evolve into a more refined and organic style this past January and have reformed as Bright Giant. The new band has a raw energy that mixes rock, country, alternative with a chewy melodic center. It sounds a little like The Mother Hips with less psychedelic influence and more Foo Fighters injected in the mix. Opening with the distortion driven "Women" it finds it's voice with a foot stomping rhythm and harmonic chorus."Songbird" is another gem that starts out [...]

Last year The Mother Hips quietly released Pacific Dust , a record that continues the band's knack for seamlessly blending country, '60s pop and pure rock 'n' roll. Goddamn right it made the TDoL Best Of Twenty-Oh-Nine list . The Hips are on tour and recently made a stop at Daytrotter to record some raw and rambunctious versions of a few tunes off Pacific Dust and Kiss the Crystal Flake as well as a cover of Gene Clark 's "Kansas [...]
The Heated (aka Cristina Espinosa) has focused her DIY spirit and embarked on the Twelve Songs Project , a project that involves recording and releasing one song at a time for every month of 2010. Her classic, bluesy Liz Phair style is well-represented in "Cars Roll Down," the first song of this project that will be available for free download until the end of February. Subsequently, February's song will be available for all of March, March's song for all of April, etc. Listen to and download the songs from the Twelve Songs Project [...]

Last week, I put together a list of my Ten Favorite Jam Cruise 8 Sets , but that was only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. There were so many stellar moments - both musical and otherwise - that didn't make that list. Each hour of every day, it seemed like I experienced something mind-blowing that just doesn't happen in the real world or at typical music festivals. So this week, I decided to put together a list of 75 Amazing Jam Cruise 8 Moments to show the breadth [...]

The Mother Hips ' trippy power-pop has aged awfully well. On the Bay-area quintet's seventh album, "Pacific Dust," singer-guitarist Tim Bluhm and crew avoid the pratfalls of many of their psych-pop brethren — they're heartfelt but not sappy, amiable but not goofy, expansive but not indulgent, with songs that exude a 1970s warmth without feeling microwaved. Now entering their third decade, they shouldn't be taken for granted. ||| Download: "Third Floor Story" and "White Falcon Fuzz" ||| Live: The Mother Hips perform Jan. 28 at [...]

Ray Wylie Hubbard offers answers rather than questions in the title of his new album, "A: Enlightenment B: Endarkenment (Hint: There Is No C)." Or maybe they're just choices. The music offers a lot of choices, too. (Hint: There are no wrong answers.) For starters, the album's filled with country, rock and blues; there's even some holy-roller style gospel. You can choose if you want, but I'm betting you'll have a hard time because Hubbard blends everything into one big gritty groove. You could try choosing between Hubbard's musical heroes, too, but Hubbard's not [...]
