Lions live Being the "Live Music Capital" of the world, the perpetual buzz of bands taking to the stage only comes to a subdued hum for a couple of weeks each year as the holiday season sets on the city, only to roar out of its slumber on Jan 1st when the annual Free Week begins. For those not familiar with Free Week, it's like a mini SXSW, but for locals only. A giant celebration of Austin bands and music taking place in a handful of venues mostly around the Red River strip, for a little [...]

FRIDAY DJ Select (Murray Street Coffee): Special "King Yellowman" set from 5-9. Peter Murphy (Lakewood Theater) : The Bauhaus Singles Collection (Volume 1) is undeniable; a nasty, solid slab of extremely dark and desperate punk rock. The rest of their catalog is a murky, gothy swamp after that. I think I should give it another chance, and I'm partly saying [...]

Chicago's music scene is filled with aspiring rock bands, but the harsh reality is that most of them will probably toil in obscurity forever. To make it in the Windy City, a band must find a way to stand out from the competition. Traits like ingenuity, an arduous work ethnic, confidence, and luck are needed to propel the trajectory forward, and it looks like local rock-pop outfit Republic of Lights has everything it needs to get to the next level. The quintet is comprised of seasoned Chicago musicians who've been honing their skills for [...]

High Places is the Brooklyn duo of Robert Barber and Mary Pearson. Their self-titled debut, available via Thrill Jockey, is an oddly hypnotizing mixture of barely-there vocal melodies, sampled sounds, tribal percussion, and almost dance-worthy beats. These two young folks truly have a unique sound, and fans of Person Pitch should definitely take High Places for a spin. The use of headphones is highly recommended, as there is a lot of cool ambient stuff going on. In a few days they will embark on a lengthy European tour, but tonight they will be [...]

Here is some literature on musical happenings this week that will be worth your hard-earned dollar. Tonight, local indie icons Spoon are at The Parish . Tomorrow night Emo's hosts A Place to Bury Strangers, Sian Alice Group and Ringo Deathstarr , for a shoegaze-a-palooza . I caught Sian Alice Group at SXSW, and it was beautiful stuff. Also on Tuesday The Magnetic Fields will appear at The Paramount Theatre , with music ranging from "exuberant blasts of power-pop noise, to electro-country meditations, to euro-pop." If [...]

Pattern Is Movement / Mothfight / Florene (Swiss House): Pattern Is Movement are apparently not fans of critic-speak that mentions the alleged polyrhythms utilized in their complex prog-pop, though I imagine they hate the word "prog" being applied as well. Anyways, it's probably next to impossible to pull off polyrhythms when you're operating as a duo, however they still manage to make it sound as if there still an entire extended group of participants, thus adding to the [...]
Other Lives ' song "Black Tables" was featured last week on the season premiere of ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" . The song is available for download on iTunes .
