In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Blake Butler is the rare young writer who consistently and effectively challenges his readers. Scorch Atlas is a haunting collection of interconnected stories and vignettes, a dystopian work of genius. The book itself is a work of art. The internal pages are individually distressed, and the page edges and cover appear burnt and scarred, and the design complements the book's theme perfectly. Matt [...]

Album of the Quarter : A Sunny Day in Glasgow - Ashes Grammar Runners up: Memory Tapes - Seek Magic , Mount Eerie - Wind's Poem I am well aware that this podcast is a good month and a half removed from the end of 2009's third quarter, and that we are balls deep in the year's capping three-month span. But, perhaps the extra reflection has further winnowed the included tracks down from the fickle week to week whims of the blogosphere? Let's just pretend that that's [...]
Photo coverage of Mount Eerie and Lucy Michelle at Minneapolis' Bedlam Theatre.

I know this pic has nothing to do with fall; I just liked it. First and foremost the songs on this mix tape really have nothing to do with fall. They are just a compilation of songs I've been enjoying since the leaves started turning. I feel compelled to make this statement because someone will inevitably leave a comment calling bullshit on "Walkabout" being a fall song and demanding that it should be heard under the summer sun. I'm aware of this, but it turns out I also enjoy "Walkabout" in the fall. [...]

Mount Eerie: 8 November 2009 - Lakeshore Theatre, Chicago / Words and Pictures by Kirstie Shanley It was like driving through a dark night with David Lynch at the wheel. Mount Eerie, the moniker of Phil Everum who also has released albums as The Microphones, has always been more on the human side than most musicians dare venture, exploring the outer regions of cerebral metaphor. Elverum has also proved himself to be adept in his collaborations with others, most recently with Julie Doiron for 2008's Lost Wisdom.

Upon learning of the new Bakers At Dawn album and covering the band's new video, another discovery was made. That of Cory Landels , the director of said video and mastermind behind this video for Mount Eerie 's "Between Two Mysteries", one of my favorite tracks of 2009. Comparing the two, both have the same look and feel. But where "Mesmophone" was pleasant and, in a way, calm; "Between Two Mysteries" has an obvious eerie nature to it. Yet there's something romantic about the video; as if it was one of James and Laura's [...]

Has anybody else been listening to Wind's Poem ? It's the new album from Mount Eerie , or native Anacortan Phil Elverum. Taken by its elegiac, methodical march, the beautiful behemoth has me cradled in its giant palm. I'm compelled to kneel before some sort of Dark Lord and succumb to his intoxicating assurance of malevolent glory. Elverum the auteur might argue that there is no Dark Lord other than the blustery gusts of wind he's chosen to exult in this ode to the atmospheric force. The record, predicated on [...]
"Is anyone trying to sell an amp?" Phil Elverum asks. He is sincere, and when a few people from the audience yell responses, he says, "No, really. It has to be loud...at least a hundred watts." The man behind Mount Eerie had apparently blown his amp right before the show at Art Damage Lodge on Wednesday night. The incident is actually a pretty accurate indicator of what to anticipate during the set, an abridged version of Mount Eerie's latest album, Wind's Poem . As soon as the band gathers onstage, it's obvious this [...]

Former The Microphones frontman Phil Elverum, is coming to Louisville as Mount Eerie alongside the brilliant Tara Jane O'Neil and No Kids . We'd already mentioned that Mount Eerie was coming to Lexington's Red Mile on Oct. 22, the one year anniversary of their Louisville show at Skull Alley . Well, if an hour was to far for you to drive to see this show, you have another show Thursday, November 5th at [...]

Daniel Romano, Julie, Doiron, and Fred Squire: beautiful music Julie Doiron is someone I've never paid enough attention to in these here pages, but it's not for a lack of interest in her work. She is perhaps one of the great unsung heroes of the Canadian music scene: an indie pioneer as part of Eric's Trip, and a consummate collaborator with Mount Eerie and Wooden Stars (to name a few), and a respected and loved solo musician in her own right. Doiron has hit another one out of the park, this time by teaming up with [...]

Entre force et retenue, la musique de Gregory Beson me rappelle parfois le voyage intérieur que me procure celle de Mount Eerie. The wheel turns, and also MANNERS turns on my turntable, offering to us Loo for a listen and download on Sun of Bees . A sweet and lively spinning top of emotions... Between [...]

I really like going to concerts, but it's actually very rare that I continue to reflect on a show months after it's passed. Mount Eerie's 2008 performance at the Art Damage Lodge in Northside was one of those shows. Phil Elvrum, the creative force behind Mount Eerie , performed along with two of his friends, Julie Dorion and Fred Squire, with whom he had collaborated on last year's lauded Lost Wisdom album. The tone of the show was hushed, intimate, and even reverent. The lonesome and organic sound of the trio's performance, as well as the set [...]

Alexis Pike - A Teton, St. Anthony, Idaho (2005) Daniel, Fred, & Julie - Runner (mp3): A tape machine on the floor of a garage in Sackville, New Brunswick in the summer of 2009. A semi-circle of folding chairs. On one sits Fred Squire, under a mess of black hair and thick-rimmed glasses, staring down at his feet as he tunes his acoustic guitar. Julie Doiron sits just below him on her knees, [...]

On Halloween we stopped by Bushwick's Market Hotel and took in what's probably the most holiday-appropriate show we've ever seen: Mount Eerie headlined a night of music that served to emphasize the band's progressively darker direction. Not only that, but they also brought along a couple of bands that were far darker, Liturgy and Malkuth, and presented them to a crowd that was unquestionably enthusiastic. We don't know whether it was the Halloween vibe or simply a crowd shift of Mount Eerie's fan base, but one thing was for sure: Phil Elverum [...]

by Andrew Frisicano Mount Eerie's Phil Elverum @ Market Hotel... The haunting, cryptic grind of Malkuth and the high-intensity shriek of Liturgy (in full corpsepaint) were quite the introduction for Mount Eerie 's headlining set at Market Hotel on Halloween. The latest opus from Mt. Eerie (aka Phil Elverum ), Wind's Poem , is a metal-inspired noise odyssey [...]
