The Note Books series features musicians discussing their literary side. Previous contributors have included John Darnielle , John Vanderslice , and others. Japanther's lo-fi aesthetic, eclectic samples and legendary high energy live shows combine to make these Brooklynites one of my favorite bands. The band's new album, Rock 'n' Roll Ice Cream , is out March 2nd. Japanther has also published a book, Don't Trust Anyone Over 30 . [...]

Best Coast's Bobb Bruno & Bethany Cosentino Hello everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Far too many exceptional shows last week including last night's NO CANCER! Benefit show with No Age , Vivian Girls , Best Coast , Graham Forest , Darker My Love and more. I do believe Bethany from Best Coast 's performance as one of their most entertaining yet. [...]

Songwriter Ferraby Lionheart departed L.A. for Nashville to work on his sophomore album, "The Jack of Hearts," which is due this spring. A handful of L.A. shows late last year revealed his new batch of vintage Americana to be downright gorgeous, and those songs will get a workout when he kicks off a Tuesday residency at the Bootleg Theater. The Living Sisters , Willoughby and Paige Stark support. ... Jack's Mannequin appears at the Viper Room in a warm-up gig for its upcoming tour. ... Also: Tenacious D , [...]

On the 23rd of April 2007 the server that hosted Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin's website dramatically crashed. It returned later that week but despite a thorough investigation and sincere soul-searching the cause of the blackout remains a mystery for the Missouri 4-piece. SSLYBY are an example of the archetypal indie act who are forever within a whisker of widespread success. Of course album number three, which is soon to be released (with Death Cab For Cutie fingers on production duties), could change all that and most probably will if they can conjure memorable numbers in the vein of [...]

[In between all the Grammy prepping and posturing, there is a massive amount of live music to enjoy. Don't know where to start, really, except to wish Justin Timberlake a happy birthday on Sunday — maybe he can take home one of those cute gramophone trophies from the big awards show ...] Tonight: The big stuff has LL Cool J at the Key Club, Herb Alpert at Disney Hall, Chris Cornell at the sold-out Troubadour, the Fray at the [...]

![Locrian – "Rain of Ashes" CD – Basses Frequences [Album Review]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2286988_lg.jpg)
Locrian - "Ghost Repeater" Terence Hannum & André Foisy comprise Locrian , and Rain of Ashes comprises what, to me, is the perfect drone-disguised-as-metal document. Think: Pretty much any Nadja / Aidan Baker collab release that leans toward the noise/drone end; Tim Hecker , Dead Texan [...]

Citay Play the Echoplex on Thursday (with the Fruit Bats!) Monday 1/25/10 [Pick of the Night] The French Semester / Team Abraham / Le Switch / Wonderground @ The Echo (Free) – The French Semester are doing the free Monday night residency in January. Get there by 10 PM to see Le Switch (one of my favorite local bands). They're now a bit more rockin' as a quartet. [Recommended] Girls @ Detroit Bar ($12) – Great chance to [...]
The first time I heard "Hornets! Hornets!" (the first song on this monster) was the first time I heard The Hold Steady. I had read a favorable and intriguing review of an unknown band and ordered the disc sound-unheard. When it came in the mail, I ripped off the plastic and tossed it in the player, and my first reaction was to laugh. They came on like an aging metal bar band, with the pick scraping up the neck (zoom!) and the double-voiced Thin Lizzy guitars. Is this a joke? No, I think they're serious. [...]
photography by Travis Moore Manhattan Murder Mystery kicked off the evening in their true legit style, with their blow your brains out anthems. The helmet hit the ground with a bang and as the last song came to an end, Matthew Teardrops guitar hit the ground and he was out the door. Good set. The Cigarette Bums [...]

I Am Not Sidney Poitier by Percival Everett Graywolf Press , 2009 I feel kind of stupid for not knowing who Percival Everett was before this book. Not that I KNOW him now, but now I'm a bit more familiar, and I want to explore his back catalog, maybe take on Glyph or Suder or that beastly-sounding Strom Thurmond one. But here we are with I Am Not Sidney Poitier , [...]
photography by Travis Moore This was a great show for a larger sized venue. Usually I'm used to seeing names like The Happy Hollows or Useless Keys on the Spaceland marque, however on this particular Sunday, the venue lent it's stage to a couple of my favorite bands: Manhattan Murder Mystery and Dirt Dress. Matthew Teardrop, singer/guitarist for Manhattan Murder Mystery, always has this, "I'm going to kill myself," type of energy and often thrusts his army helmet to the ground with great force during the majority of his performances. Katya Arce holds down the bass line along with [...]

"If history were past... history wouldn't matter ... But history is present ... You and I are history. We carry our history. We act our history." - James Baldwin "It's stunning how Jay Leno outfoxed you again ... Your agent [said], 'There's good news and bad news. You are doing The Tonight Show ... Uh, but remember that discussion we had where you said I'll never have to fuckin' follow Leno again?" - Norm Macdonald appearing on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, February 10th, 2009 1 It's a maxim and [...]
1. First thing is first. What do Dragging an Ox through Water godhead Brian Mumford's windblown hair, creepy smiles, drawing boards, concrete structures and humping (fighting?) salamanders have in common? They all show up in this Dragging an Ox through Water video, directed by M Blash. The scenery might creep you out a bit, but the song...well, it could creep you out a little, too, but it'll also get stuck in your head. The tune, along with a handful of other great ones, appears on 2008 effort The Tropics of Phenomenon . It sounds like we'll [...]
