Continua a leggere My Brightest Diamond: unica data italiana l'8 dicembre a Roma... Commenta »
Clare Manchon's spritely vocals and chamber pop offer the right amount of effervescence. Arrow shoots into the heart with spritely voiced Clare Manchon at the bow. Her husband, Olivier, collaborates with her as well as a cast of characters that includes members of the National, Beirut, and My Brightest Diamond. The various instrumentation (cellos, violins, kazoos, saws, recorders, etc.) does not sound cluttered; instead, it combines a set of precise arrangements and enveloping lyrics. Manchon's sweet and lofty vocals charm the listener with a blend of chamber pop...

By Jon Stone Before the show Thursday night, I spent some quality time with Thao Nguyen's catalog. I'd never seen her play before and I felt obliged to do my homework and gather some things to look forward to. I'm a fan, to be sure—though, I'll admit to a small, preexisting hang-up related to Thao's vocal style. My favorite female artists are those with huge voices— Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond and Annie Clark of St. Vincent come to mind (apparently, former Sufjan Stevens back-up singers need only [...]

Got a watermarked listening copy of IRM, Charlotte Gainsbourg's (and Beck's, for mr Hansen produced) new album. It's out in December. Here are my first impressions. Master's Hand Starts off a little oriental, then changes into a Tom Waits-ish (steel percussion, repetitive acoustic guitar, distorted bassdrum) song. Charlotte's voice is barely more than a whisper, melody is like a nursery rhyme. Lyric: 'Breathe out, come to life, give me a reason to feel.' Strings come in, Charlotte wails. Promising intro. IRM You know this, you can download it [...]
Nada Surf @ Music Hall of Williamsburg ( Jack Groetzinger ) There weren't a ton of shows going on in NYC last night (10/28), relatively speaking, but members/collaborators of most indie rock bands in existence were part of them. Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service, husband of She of She & Him) played with Jay Farrar (Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo) at Webster Hall with John Roderick (The Long Winters) opening. "Along with all 12 songs from the album, Farrar and Gibbard [...]

photos by Julieta Cervantes , words by Andrew Frisicano DOWNLOAD: The Long Count - Bull Run (feat. Kelley Deal) (MP3) The Long Count premiered last night (10/28) at the Brooklyn Academy of Music while the Yankees were losing to the Phillies up in the Bronx. It's a risky piece - and not just because the pre-show epigraph was a radio broadcast of the last time the Yankees were swept in a [...]

If you came out to the Beachland Ballroom Saturday night hoping to hear the blues, you'd have left the venue damn well p*ssed. In spite of the American roots rock pedigree of Drummer's bassist, Pat Carney, aka, the drummer for the Akron blues, duo, The Black Keys, the assembled super-group of drummers who comprise the band, Drummer, stayed comfortably clear of anything resembling the blues, instead treating the crowd to a set of modern indie rock in the vein of Wolf Parade, complete with nerdy, prog-rock flourishes. Jon Finley (Beaten Awake, Party of Helicopters) was [...]

After a summer of hard work, the payoff is here: Flawless Hustle proudly presents Money Isn't Real , our first compilation. If there's one topic that's a constant in Hip-Hop is money. Whether heads are making it, spending it or stealing it, the scene (and our world) is obsessed with money. Hell, one of the reasons people hustle is to get loot, so we ourselves know the power of a dollar, which got us thinking: what the fuck is money, really? It's an interesting concept, and was a great jumping off point for this debut project, so [...]
By Jon Stone ( @jwstone ) Late into Blitzen Trapper's set on Friday night in Urbana, a member of the packed Canopy Club audience began to crowd surf. His ride lasted only a few seconds, but from the grins on the faces of the band, it was clear something special had just happened. After the song, guitarist Erik Menteer advised us that we had just witnessed the very first crowd surf ever at a Blitzen Trapper show. He felt it was significant, also, that the surf occurred during "Furr," [...]
Today we're joining thousands of other thoughtful blogs to shed light on the serious issue of climate change, the focus of this year's Blog Action Day . The aim of the day, held each year on October 15, is to draw attention and incite discussion on one global issue. The climate-and how we're altering it-needs some serious attention. Oxfam America talked to Thao Nguyen of Thao with the Get Down Stay Down on the issue, and we've also interviewed hundreds of musicians about the political and social issues surrounding climate change and the green [...]

The National's lead singer, Matt Berninger, and My Brightest Diamond 's Shara Worden are also involved. The performance piece, entitled 'The Long Count,' is the result of more than a year of work by the Dessners' and [...]

I've never been a fan of karaoke; I've always thought it was just for drunks who wanted to see how bad they could butcher "You Shook Me All Night Long" and "Sweet Home Alabama." Talking to Roberto Carlos Lange changed my perception of it. The South Florida native learned how to make music by experimenting with his parents' karaoke machine. Lange grew up listening to Latin American pop songs with his Ecuadorian parents and their friends during festive parties in the late 80s and early 90s. He left Florida for Savannah, Georgia – a "completely different [...]
Portland's The Decemberists brought their brand of whimsical folk rock to the Riviera Theatre on Thursday night. While their two-hour set of towering climaxes and bittersweet reflections was played in high spirits and to near perfection, the show seemed to suffer an odd case of split personality syndrome. At times, The Decemberists seemed a bit sleepy during the second half of their performance, which is understandable for a band that has been touring constantly since the release of the last effort, Hazards Of Love , last March. [...]

Άλλη μια ενδιαφέρουσα συνεργασία εικαστικών με μουσικούς. Αυτή τη φορά ο εικαστικός Matthew Ritchie συνεργάζεται με τους μουσικούς Bryce Dessner and Aaron Dessner για το project The Long Count . Εκτός από τη δωδεκαμελή ορχήστρα συμμετέχουν οι τραγουδιστές Matt Berninger (The National), Kim and Kelley Deal (The Breeders, The Pixies), Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond).
