A couple of issues ago, Rolling Stone called Vampire Weekend's latest album Contra a project that harkens back to the classic Paul Simon work Graceland . Since Graceland stands as one of those albums that defined my childhood, I had to give Contra a try. Maybe the review already planted a seed in my head, but Simons's fingerprints are all over the album. West African drum patters are strewn across the album while lines delivered in "White Sky" sound like they were read from one [...]

Their songs are of ashtray broken hearts and lansdscapes of beauty and [...]

This is it. The best of the best. As determined by me and in alphabetical-by-artist order. This list has been a labor of love and it is an honor to pay tribute to so many fantastic albums. With that said, don't hesitate to lift your leg and leave your own mark in the comments. Or just track down the albums here that you don't know and get down with a good set of headphone. I know these lists are self indulgent and often pointless but they are fun nonetheless. A big thank you to all the TBE readers who [...]

[image by Songbirdnest ] A new update just three weeks after the last one! Its a busy time for nyctaper with new shows being added every day it seems. One hint for our readers - be sure to pick up the Village Voice this Wednesday! Below is the updated schedule. We expect to attend and record these events. However, circumstances will prevent some of these from being done, and others will be added in the meantime. If you want nyctaper to record your band, a band you [...]

I'd love to be able to say I did this list in one shot, fired from the hip, and came out fearlessly and decisively with my rock solid Top 20 Albums list ready for prime time. The truth is, unfortunately filled with scribbles, crumpled paper balls, wishing I had 25 slots, and a few question marks that will inevitably be answered in a year or two from now when I look back on this list and laugh at myself. I must admit my 2008 list held up pretty well for me over time. Even my 2007 [...]

Fresh from beautiful "Georgia" burrowing its way into hearts aplenty after we let it soar out the cage last week, Yuck have made another new track available for download over at their glistening blogdom . "Automatic" throws a bit of a curveball from its careering, headrushing predecessor; those spectral boy-girl vocals stripped to their most naked and cathartic with only skeletal piano sketches to spare blushes and bruising. Yuck - Automatic

For the 12th year Brainwashed Readers have voiced their opinion on the best and worst music of the year. While some of the results shouldn't come as a surprise, there are, as always, plenty of anomalies. Brainwashed Readers have once again, and probably moreso than any other previous year, distanced themselves from the mainstream. Thanks to all who took part. As always, the Brainwashed Staff have added their comments. Album of the Year:Sunn O))), Monoliths Dimensions Their best album by a country mile. I get the feeling their collaborators have a lot to do with [...]

2009 was an interesting year in music. We witnessed the triumphant return of The Prodigy , Muse , a-ha and The Bravery , the death of Michael Jackson and the split of Oasis ... not to mention the disappointing offering from a certain Basildon trio (Yawning of the Universe anyone?). Newcomers White Lies , War Tapes , The Anomalies and Me My Head haunted my iPod and and The Cure picked up the 2009 NME Godlike Genius award from Hollywood director Tim Burton - [...]

The dreaded Christmas album. Always risky. Never cool. Even the best barely get away with it once or never try it at all. But there is much to admire for musicians who celebrate the Christmas season, however flimsily veiled it may be as a collection of 'winter' songs or just a bit of ironic fun. There is a third option, however. Religion is a tricky subject but not when it's Christmas; usually an excuse for blatant faith-driven rock and spiritual crooning. It's accepted. And it's even better with a slightly sceptical slant; questioning not embracing, pointing a finger at revelry [...]
Many of the Top 10 tracks listed below, appeared earlier as part of I Rock Cleveland's Top 20 Albums of 2009 . There's "Watching the Planets," inter-stellar album closer on The Flaming Lips' Embryonic, and "Sea Within a Sea," the first single released from The Horrors' Primary Colours. It was the latter which first announced to the listening public that this band of horror punks from England may not be the flash in the pan we had all assumed they would be. Who knew they listened to kraut-rock, The Smiths, The Psychedelic Furs, and The Stone [...]
