At a time when we are all witnessing the CD's imminent demise and the convenience of digital files running rampant, thankfully from an art perspective, a vinyl re-emergence is upon us. While sound quality is obviously seen as the most important reason why we are seeing audiophiles jumping back on the vinyl bandwagon, album artwork is also getting a much deserved close-up. With the vinyl album requiring more elaborate artwork packages, bands are re-thinking the overall aesthetic and producing some great work, which only enhances the overall music experience. 2009 has been a great year not only for the ears, [...]

Rawlings: A couple years ago, at the end of '07, Conor [Oberst] called me and asked me if I would come play guitar with Bright Eyes because Mike Mogis was producing a record and it was running on, and they [...]

Heartbreaker - Ryan Adams (2000) The argument that most of the world's greatest art is derived from sadness is one that I've always worked hard to refute, but a guy like Ryan Adams doesn't make it easy for me to do so. It doesn't [...]

Blacklisted by Neko Case 2002, Bloodshot Records, 14 tracks at 39 min. Listen Buy CD RATING: 47 out of 50 Seeing Neko Case perform "Deep Red Bells" live was quite the treat. Following the concert, I bought some pastries and iced tea at the local CVS, wanting to fill my stomach. No cheese Danish, though, could be as satisfying as seeing someone with such command over the human voice. Case's singing is anything [...]

photos by Vincent Cornelli The set was awesome: she played songs from every single one of her albums and each song was accompanied by a group of images or cartoons visuals projected onto a screen behind her. She also joked about the wattage of the amplifier and her microphone-alluding to her getting shocked by it at her New Jersey show the previous night . But we come back to her voice. She truly is one of the best [...]

Neko Case's voice is so hypnotic to me. It's like a tractor beam and I can't resist its pull. Want an example? Good. Here's "Red Tide" from Jimmy Fallon last night.

Contrast Podcast recently asked music bloggers like myself to submit our favorite 50 songs of the year for their annual "Festive 503 podcast. Our selections were then compiled into a shortlist and now we've been asked to recruit votes to narrow it down. For the curious, I've bolded the 10 songs I personally voted for. I really, really want "Nice Very Nice" by Kurt Vonnegut & Dave Soldier (from their album Ice-9 Ballads ) to make the final list. Not only because it's my favorite song of the year, from my favorite album of the year, [...]
HANK ALTOGETHER: I saw Neko play a pretty disastrous show in Montclair, NJ two days before she performed this gorgeous rendition of "Red Tide" on Jimmy Fallon. At the Montclair show, the songstress got electrocuted not once but twice while the tech crew seemed to twiddle their thumbs. Putting on her sweater, Neko was rebuked by an idiot in the audience who yelled "GO!" "I'm just putting on my fucking sweater," she responded. "You get a rock band. Then you can fucking go." We all [...]
