A Classic Education A Classic Education are a six-piece band from Bologna, Italy whose epic melodramas seem to attracting much attention. They played Indietracks in 2008 and are frequent visitors to London and further afield. Following a trip to CMJ in New York in October, they're back in the UK this month: they play at the Lexington on 26 November and the Buffalo Bar the following night. They have released two records: an [...]

I'm with you, kids - let's celebrate the end of another week. Before we leave, though, let's do a quick recap: - We had more fun with Magnetic Fields covers . There's a whole slew of more fun coming this Sunday, when Part Five drops. - I dreamt of crack . which was whack, but it helped to remind me of The Moldy Peaches, which was whacker. It also reminded me to subtly plug my nascent dream blog , which was the whackest of all. - We saw Random [...]

It was my first time seeing Reigning Sound live, and it was certainly worth the drive to Detroit. The city's garage-rock faction was well represented. I'm told that was Detroit Cobras guitarist Mary Ramirez front-and-center for most of the night, singing and dancing like a superfan. Head Reigning Sound honcho Greg Cartwright , a legend in garage-rock circles for his work in the '90s with the Oblivians , was appreciative, taking several opportunities to thank everyone for coming out on a Monday night and calling Detroit "my home away from home." [...]
Artist & Title: Joan Osborne & The Holmes Brothers- Brokedown Palace Date & Venue: 2009-11-10 Shea's Performing Arts Center, Buffalo NY Taper & Show Download: Lenny Stubbe Joan Osborne gives a great introduction to this Grateful Dead classic, explaining it is her all-time favorite but that she could never convince The Dead to let her sing it. I played with the levels so you could hear the introduction a bit better, but you'll notice a somewhat harsh volume swell, what can I say? An audio engineer - I [...]

Frank Yang Q: Without a new record to promote - Mr. Love & Justice has been out for close to two years - what reason did Billy Bragg have for staging an ambitious cross-Canada tour ? A: Who cares? Any time you get the opportunity to see Billy Bragg live, you take it, no questions asked. Of course, I say that having missed his last three appearances in Toronto - the September 2006 show at the Music Hall for not one but two weddings, [...]

It's going to be my album of the year, at least based on its placing in my top 5 of all albums released this decade, but I still didn't know for certain every lyric to every song on the album, which was mildly annoying. Sunset Rubdown hadn't included a lyric sheet with the album's release and although I'd waded through the threads on the Wolf Parade forums and on songmeanings.net at various times this year, there were enough discrepancies to throw me off on more than one lyric in more than one [...]

For the past 12 years and for over 1700 shows John Kadlecik has played the role of Jerry Garcia for the Dark Star Orchestra , a Grateful Dead cover band got its start with weekly gigs at Martyr's several years ago and has since crafted a following across the country and into Europe. Kadlecik announced yesterday in a letter posted on the band's website that he will be leaving Dark Star Orchestra to join Furthur , the newly formed ban comprised of founding Grateful Dead members Phil Lesh and Bob [...]
Last week I posted about the first of the three This Land is Your Music shows at The Mill Restaurant in Iowa City featuring Pieta Brown and selected regional artists. Last week's show featured Pieta in a solo acoustic setting. This week's show featured Pieta in her most common live configuration- in a duo with Bo Ramsey . This was a show I was really looking forward to as it also had Bo as the opening act as a solo acoustic performance, which I hadn't seen before! As much as I look back [...]

Dark Star Orchestra on Monday confirmed that guitarist/singer John Kadlecik is leaving the band. The official word on Kadlecik, who has played "Jerry" in the well-traveled, well-oiled Grateful Dead tribute since its 1997 inception, is that he has officially resigned. [Photo of Jeff Mattson and John Kadlecik by David Gans ] According to a statement from the band, Kadlecik's last show with Dark Star Orchestra will be its Dec. 5 date in Buffalo, NY. Kadlecik has in recent months been playing with Furthur , the Bob Weir/Phil [...]
Sorry about the lack of a post yesterday; I was in Buffalo for my friend's 30th birthday last night and didn't have a chance to write anything up, and Dave was working/taking care of his daughter. As the year winds to a close, there seems to be less intruiguing ...

Does video art sap the life right out of musical lyricism, stifling imagination? I begin today's Radio Dick with my simplistic and probably naive assertion that one ought to still read words and not dive too heavily into visual culture. My thoughts have been weighing pretty heavily on this idea lately; my 9th grade class is moving through Romeo and Juliet with me and I can't help but notice the dwindling patience with the text, the lack of analysis without strong coaching from my end with visual stimuli. The largely thematic aspects of the play still garner interest, [...]

With only four shows left on the Working On A Dream tour (wrapping up in Buffalo on November 22nd), and with much buzz about how the band will be taking some sort of extended hiatus, now's the time to savor and cherish what Bruce and the Band have been bringing all year - and that's night after night of powerhouse performances. The tour started out in April with a healthy dose of tracks from Working On A Dream . Last night in Cleveland, only the title track was played. The tour has morphed into more [...]

( Editor's note: My father and I went to New York City to see a Mets game in the fall. While there, we toured a submarine. It was his idea. I am a vegetarian and, obviously, a pacifist. I took pictures of everything on the sub that was circular. The picture above ties in with today's theme of randomness. Does establishing a theme of randomness this early in the post diminish its inherent randomness? Mrs. Citizen says "yes." Shit.) Let's start off today with some cold, harsh truths: (1) There is no order to the universe. [...]

MUNICIPAL WASTE DRENCHED BUT NOT DEFEATED MASSIVE AGGRESSIVE FLOOD CAUSES VENUE CHANGE Last night in Houston, TX at The Meridian just as MUNICIPAL WASTE were getting warmed up for their show a freak flood occurred inside the venue. During Goatwhore's set, a fan decided it would be a good idea to climb on the pipes in the ceiling. Little did he know, that climbing the pipes would pull down one of the pipes causing the sprinkler system to go off and flood the venue. The WASTE guys were in their dressing room and the [...]

If you ask Gotty ™ about Wale , he'll be sure to tell you that he's been a fan since the kid was kicking freestyles in fifth grade or something. Me? I was late. I didn't become a fan until Wale dropped " The Kramer ." It was his ability to take a topic (the "N" word) that was being run to the ground by every rapper with a pulse at the time and add an emotional layer to it that few could put in their songs. Attention:Deficit is [...]
