Some of you may know Skye Edwards from her role as the lead singer in Morcheeba and others may remember her from her great 2006 album, Mind How You Go . Suddenly, out of the blue, she's back with a new one this week. It's called Keeping Secrets - that's the cover image above, sort of a cross between [...]

This new commercial for the newest HTC smartphone gets my attention everytime. You know the one, the one that says: "You don't need to get a phone. You need a phone that gets you. And you. And you. And you". I'll admint that HTC phone looks pretty slick, but its the song playing in the background that has my heart. That tune, that probably has your attention too, is Nina Simone 's 1965 version of the American traditional song Sinnerman , with Felix da Housecat 's remxing touch. Download: Nina Simone - Sinnerman (Felix [...]
By Everett True I'm a tastemaker critic. I lecture in music blogging. The title of my own blog is "The Life of Everett True as a Fading Music Critic," and within it, I feature a pleasingly random array of music discovered via social networks (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace) and the odd record-company freebie. There are plenty of links and shoutouts for others operating in similar networks. We're talking Town Bike, Las Kellies, Hello Cuca! , Super Wild Horses, Monster Women, Kitchen's Floor , Blank Realm, Pens . Don't feel bad if [...]
I feel like I'm running a day behind with these blog posts. Oh, wait - I am. Well, let's make a quick mix tape and be done with this so I can focus on the real Monday blog update! CNN's website had some interesting headlines this morning: ...seems a bit optimistic if you ask me. ...it's good to see CNN reporting on timely news stories. Okay, mix tape time! RULES for uninitiated noobs : With roughly 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a [...]
We start with prison work songs from Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas; then we dive down to Jamrock to catch up to reggae songstress Cherine Anderson ; and we end with an exploration of "Work Song" by lyricist Oscar Brown Jr. , composer Nat Adderley, Joe Williams, Michael Wolff, Terry Callier, Cannonball Adderley, Nina Simone and Afro-German vocalist Lyambiko . Plus three bonus cuts featuring Sam Cooke, Jerry Butler and Otis Redding .

Sometimes the connections linking different styles of the music are not obvious, other times the relationships are directly stated. "Work Song," a jazz classic by cornetist Nat Adderley with lyrics by Oscar Brown Jr., represents a conscious effort to acknowledge the debt modern jazz owes to an earlier form of music. The song is also a critique of the American system of injustice that prevailed during the first half of the 20th century. Just as there were differences from state to state and from time period to time period, these musical versions aurally illustrate diverse variations [...]

Sometimes it's the little things. As a recent student of the speech and hearing sciences department, I'm constantly reminded about hearing damage and thus the important need for hearing protection. I'm pleased to report Benaroya Hall is an exception to your average concert experience: no ear plugs required. The massive grand piano, of stage-filling proportions in a smaller venue like Chop Suey , looked almost lonely in center stage. Simple lighting, simple dress: Rufus Wainwright demonstrated that you don't need any flashy business to awe the crowd (ok, maybe his tie/scarf [...]

Over-the-top observations from an over-the-hill rocker: - Weezer 's new CD 'Raditude' is getting so-so reviews from many leading music critics ( check MetaCritic ). Most can't seem to deal with Cuomo's jokey, tossed-off pop lyrics. I kinda like it. He's a smart guy. He knows what he's doing. Listen to 'Put Me Back Together' (sweet!) and 'I'm Your Daddy' over at Mochi Beats . On December 1st, Weezer plays Chicago's cavernous Aragon Ballroom, the same room I saw The Clash, The Jam, The Dictators, AC/DC, Devo, Gang of Four and many other bands [...]

What's good, soul babies? I hope you're ready for me...cuz I. am. back. I've been wanting to do a Souled On Samples post for quite a while now, but it's always somewhat of a painstaking process for me. I give mad props to the dudes who put together entire sample sets 3 weeks before a hip hop album officially drops, but for better or worse, that's really not my style. I started this series years ago in the hopes of illustrating how much the hip hop generation owes to its musical predecessors and vice [...]
Canadian crooner Michael Bublé returns with his 4th studio album, "Crazy Love" , released earlier in October. After collaborating with Nelly Furtado (on the multi platinum album "This Time" , back in 2005) and Boyz II Men (on his previous release, "Call Me Irresponsible" , in 2007), the Jazzy Pop phenomenon teams up with vocal band Naturally 7 , and with Soulful diva Sharon Jones and her backing band The Dap-Kings (famous for their work with Mark Ronson/Amy Winehouse). Watch Michael 's video for his [...]

Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American (Dreamworks) There are 10 other tracks on Jimmy Eat World's fourth effort besides "The Middle" but you'd be hard-pressed to find any average music fan who could name one. Which is a shame because the others are just as good – if not [...]

Listening to a Nina Simone compilation yesterday, a strange rendition of a tune caught my attention. I looked up this song, "Everyone's Gone To The Moon," and found the the original rendition of the song was more tuneful than Simone's (though less campy, and thus, entertaining to me). But as I listened, the song began to remind me of something else.... Is it me? Or does this song sound remarkably like... Read more [...]
The beautiful and really smart people over at NPR's All Songs Considered have taken on one hell of an ambitious list and they are leaving it up to us to decide how it shakes out. All of the details are right here . Yep. The 50 greatest voices of all time. This was a brutal vote...and one that I probably could have done about 17 different ways. See, I am - at heart - an over-analyzer. First of all, I think there could probably be a completely separate post about the 126 "finalists" they picked, but [...]
