It would be easy to dismiss Tribes out of hand. There's something easy to dislike about four lads who still hang around Camden beyond the age of 14, and they don't do themselves any favours by dressing like Razorlight just before they decided leather tassels and cowboy hats were "in". Also, occupying the middle ground between rock and indie is about as enigmatic as a Feeder B-side. With indie-rock still recovering from the collateral damage caused by the existence of The Towers of London, have Tribes simply appeared too soon? [...]

The most wonderful time of the year, right guys? 'Twas the end of December, and all through the blogosphere, not a creature was stirring, except for the sounds of music writers springin' chub, strokin' egos, and Bon Iverin' via the storied tradition of the "best of" list. Well, The Decibel Tolls participates in that jive as well, save for the latter. Be it as it may. So yeah, man... 2011... shit. 2011 was a turbulent and gnarly year, and as such, we've been treated to some truly stellar music. Funny how that works - civic and economic tension [...]

Sunny, poppy indie artists Milk Maid have released a follow up single to Not Me with Dead Wrong which also comes from their debut album Yucca. Admittedly I haven't got much more to say about Milk Maid that I haven't said before [likewise I probably can't express how much love I have for these guys and former Nine Black Alps bassist Martin Cohen either] but well these guys are quite simply - in the words a certain semi-misquoted wrestler- that da... Let Martin Cohen's new solo project, Milk Maid, be a lesson to you: never underestimate the bassist. Until early this year that's who Cohen was for the Manchester based band Nine Black Alps. His new album, Yucca, doesn't necessarily boggle the mind with previously hidden musical genius, but it does offer the promise of great things to come and more than justifies his breaking free from a band that might have been growing a little stale. Primarily an album about broken relationships, Yucca blends lo-fi, mostly upbeat sounds with so-sad-boy style lyrics. The vocals are so disaffected and [...]

Milk Maid From: Manchester, United Kingdom Ex Nine Black Alps bass player Martin Cohen and Milk Maid songwriter took time out from perfecting his fuzzy pop to talk to the Devil about his insomnia and gymnophobia and his alternative career options. The Devil: Why Milk Maid? Martin: You don't want to know. The Devil: What other names did you ponder before deciding it had to [...]

With his band Nine Black Alps on indefinite hiatus, bassist Martin Cohen found he had time on his hands, recording at home Milk Maid's debut album Yucca . The result is an album that might have come out on Creation Records in their 80's heyday, recalling indie stalwarts like Comet Gain and marrying timeless pop hooks to the raw spontaneity of home recording, and sweet, sun-drenched pop hooks pitched against viscerally dark lyrics. On new single Dead Wrong (out on Suffering Jukebox/ FatCat, September 19) Cohen sings ' You're [...]
Milk Maid – Yucca. Download "Such Fun" (mp3). Milk Maid is the band of Martin Cohen, who used to be the bassist for Nine Black Alps. Cohen recorded this debut Milk Maid album in his Manchester apartment while Nine Black Alps was one a break between albums. He has since left the previous band to focus on this new project. Cohen chunks through the brittle sounding dirge of these lo-fi recordings. The album is full of pop songs that vary from anthemic garage rock to divisive ballads, all put together with a little bit [...]

Now, I like my grunge, so I was always going to dig Japanese Voyeurs . Since they popped up on my radar a few years back, I've been following with interest but have yet to be blown away. Other bands who cite strong grunge influences (Nine Black Alps, Dead Confederate, Seether, Trapt, etc.) have stood up and delivered strong, gutsy music, but this London quintet have yet to do so. This, of course, is despite holding one massive not-so-secret weapon, vocalist/guitarist Romily Alice. If you've never heard her sing before, think "attitude of a teenager, voice of a toddler". [...]

'Not Me ' By Milk Maid. We have often banged the drum with regard to the fact that you don't neccesarily need a huge budget and fancy production techniques to produce great music. Milk Maid's debut album ' Yucca' once again adds weight to our argument. Recorded in songwriter Martin Cohen's flat during the indefinite hiatus of Nine Black Alps , [bands never simply split-up these days] it reveals Cohen's keen ear for a pop hook, juxtaposed with dark lyrics and visceral guitars. It's an album that conjures up the ghosts [...]
And you know that Mazes tour? Milk Maid are the support, doing noises like this: That track, Not Me, is on the just-released album Yucca . When you write about Milk Maid, you are legally obliged to mention one of them is Martin, now officially ex-Nine Black Alps, although you are free to decide if you believe this is obvious from the music, or not detectable at all. -- Visit No Rock & Roll Fun to comment, complain and kvetch

"You're killing yourself to cut your arms off / You're stabbing yourself in the gut to keep from holding on" sings Martin Cohen, front-man and only man, of Milk Maid, in his debut album 'Yucca'. With lyrics like these, one would expect to go in heavily armed with a fifth of whiskey, a dark room, and a pack of cigs. Formerly the bassist for Nine Black Alps, Cohen has decided to take a leap into liberation and adventure in releasing a record with his own unique way of doing things. With its lo-fi fuzz-pop feel, 'Yucca' finds itself flirting with [...]

Milk Maid From: Manchester, United Kingdom Milk Maid is ex Nine Black Alps bass player Martin Cohen's new project. With melodies that make you giddy and a guitar so laid back it's practically horizontal it's about as far as you can get from his former band. New single Not Me is a blast of fuzzy pop sounds like the Beach Boys played through gauze by the Jesus and Mary Chain. The other [...]

Lo Fi, guitar Pop is nothing new - in fact it lurks behind many a bedroom curtain or DIY studio. Milk Maid thankfully separate themselves from the crowd with this fine, muddied melody - filtering it through some crackling noise, messy guitars and distorted vocal. It strums and beats intently as frontman Martin Cohen calls across the flooded soundwaves - all of which were recorded at his London flat. Cohen is/was the bass player for Nine Black Alps - though this single unveils a songwriter honing in on some fine tunes. Or as Mazes frontman Jack said about [...]

Vessels & Veins is the second EP from Scottish post-rock monsters Penguins Kill Polar Bears. Following the release of their critically acclaimed debut EP Dawn in June 2010, the band have been busy building their profile in their home country, supporting the likes of Twin Atlantic, The Xcerts and Nine Black Alps. One of Scotland's most exciting young bands, Penguins Kill Polar Bears have paired up with Dromedary to release Vessels & Veins in North America as an intro to this great band. Featuring four brand-new tracks plus two remixed tracks from Dawn, the US version [...]

Springing out of the infinite hiatus of Nine Black Alps, we immediately fell in love with Martin Cohen's new project Milk Maid. Another excellent band out of Manchester, they've signed to the big wig Fat Cat Records for the debut LP. Yucca will change our summer for the better on June 20th. Recorded in his [...]
Dinosaur Pile-Up - "My Rock N Roll" Directed by The Blind Club. Came out last year but has become my favorite discovery of the year so far. The Grunge-iest Grunge that's come out of the UK since Nine Black Alps. If you were unsatisfied with the new Foo Fighters album, get your hands on this. It's that good people. Their debut [...]
