Dave Dupuis is familiar figure to Eastside clubgoers, and not just for his head of hair, which seems to occupy the whole room. Dupuis, who plays guitar in Film School and was a sound man at Spaceland and for several bands (including Silversun Pickups ), recently debuted his new band, the trio Nightmare Air . It features Film School drummer and longtime friend James Smith and bassist-singer and fellow New Hampshire native Swaan Miller, and it's not just their local associations that have ears turning. Nightmare Air's freakout-meets-space rock sounds like a Silversun Pickups vs. No [...]

MP3: Nachtmystium - Cold Tormentor (I've Become) from Nachtmystium (2003) To me, "black metal" means a style of music pioneered by Norwegian bands like Darkthrone and Mayhem in the early 1990s. The (again, for me) defining elements of the genre are densely layered trebly guitars, often low-fidelity production, high screechy vocals, lyrics about darkness, despair, and evil (as opposed to dismemberment, gore and violence), and riffs that are more melodic than one finds in other extreme forms of metal like death metal. In recent years, American bands have produced some of the best music [...]

Let me be the first to wish all of our readers a very merry Thanksgiving holiday. While you're stuffing your gullet with turkey and dressing, we'll be here all holiday long providing you with the latest Chicago music news and reviews. Also, beginning in December, we'll start our best of the decade/best of the 2009 lists. So that'll be fun. This weekend, we're spotlighting tonight's Pixies' show, Peaches and Permanent Records Third Anniversary Bash at The Hideout. But before we get to our picks for top weekend shows, a reminder: [...]

Interview with Rhymesayers artist Toki Wright – recorded live at The Metro in Chicago, Illinois on November 18 th , 2009. The Fresh Air Tour featuring Brother Ali, Evidence, Toki Wright and BK-One. Being a fan of hip-hop for some time now I have seen quite a few hip-hop shows and have met quite a few artists. I can't enough how true and respectful and giving the artists on the Fresh Air Tour are. This was easily one of the best hip-hop shows I have seen in my life. A total party from start to [...]
Merge just put out some videos from a Neutral Milk Hotel show at the old Knitting Factory in 1998 in conjunction with the reissue of In The Aeroplane Over The Sea on 180-gram vinyl. They're good quality and certainly showcase the sound and song of the band. They also weirdly showcase Jeff as a budding style icon, as one Stereogum commenter astutely points out, rocking what can only be considered a precursor to the Anton Chigurh No Country For Old Men haircut. But that's another story. The only sadness comes in here when we, as (fairly) young music [...]

Its a fine Friday here in Halifax, and if you are here, you are no doubt busy working out your weekend plans in order to take advantage of the lovely weather we seem to have on tap. Well let's see if we can assist with a quick rundown of some events of interest. I say some events, but really, we all know there's only one can't miss show this weekend: Rob Base at The Palace. I keed, but only slightly. If you know the Ack and I at all, you know very well that [...]
Story by Adam Daniels Photography by Dorothy Hong "Do you need a drink?"
"Yes, I need four double whiskeys and four PBRs." It was Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson's record release show at Williamsburg's Union Pool, and while he was among a roomful of friends, he was not at ease. Robinson's former fiancé obliged the request, assuming it was on behalf of the entire band. This was not the case. Robinson wasn't a household name in indie rock at the time. But he had a lot of the pieces in place [...]
by kevin diamond It's my Birthday today, and I'm 26. I'm on the old side of Twenty, and I'm never going back. So I've made the decision that I'm gonna post whatever I want to today. I hope you enjoy, but really, I don't care if you do, because this post is for ME. Being friends with your favorite bands is awesome, because you get access to songs that may never see the light of day. Sam Sundos, of The Sundelles , sent me this little ditty a week [...]

Jasmine Solano - "Coco Puff" Jasmine Solano - "That's Not It" "..Punanny, Electric" that is, NYC party promoting connoisseur, poly-rhythmic femcee, phenomenal, crazy dope DJ, producer of illyness - Jasmine Solano. Her resume makes you want to sign up for the next Boston marathon, if only to not feel like the fckin slacker you can be. *** AS: Of these few characters, which do you feel best represent an intelligent, fly, no nonsense, fun loving, down-ass, lady; Cat Woman, Olive Oyl, Wonder Woman, Storm or Betty Boop? Why? [...]
Kyuss - " Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop " The genre of stoner rock probably has a somewhat maligned reputation, by virtue of its misleading name. Certainly, the genre used to be known for its artists and fans being stoners — it's said that the effects of marijuana complement the music quite well — but there's no reason anybody can't enjoy it, provided slow-to-mid tempo, low-tuned guitars, melodic vocals, and a whole lot of bass sounds good to you. Stoner rock's influences go right back to the 1960s if you look hard enough, with [...]

Make all the Williamsburg hipster jokes you want, but there have been few sweeter deals in recent memory than the Jelly Pool Parties. They've resided in parks within Brooklyn's music mecca for a half-decade now, but are in jeopardy at the moment because the New York State Parks Department and the Open Space Alliance says their current home at the East River State Park may not be available next summer. Among others, U.S. Senator (and BK native) Charles Schumer is fighting to keep the concert series alive. He even invites you to give him a ring at 212-486-4430 [...]

The summer of 2003 was a hot one in eastern Washington, and my concrete bunker of an apartment contained the heat like no other. Granted, the above image wasn't shot by yours truly until 2004, but it sure seemed hot enough to ignite even the least combustible of items. I wrapped up my undergraduate that December, which was cold as Antarctica, and upon that milestone I moved to Seattle. It was a good year for the Northwest; many of my favorite albums came from Seattle labels like Sub Pop and Barsuk. As for the list, I've [...]

Well thirty-four seems little different to thirty-three, apart from the fact that it seems to involve a severe headache and an aversion to bright lights. What I need is a lunch and the King's Wark and a couple of pints and I'll be right as rain. Hopefully. You'll be blindly indifferent to know that after my back injury (yes, months ago) I am now finally feeling brave enough to go back to playing some gentle 5-a-side football again. It's weird with backs - I've done some running, and it feels fine, but because I'm not all that confident [...]
From Pitchfork: TV, a mashed up semi-cover by the "super group" Jim Jarmusch, Bob Mould, Bradford Cox & No Age of Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer".And this vid is rather tough to figure out what's going on. But if you stick with it, this is basically some hotel room rehearsals for ATP (All Tomorrow's Parties). Fast forward to about 4:30 to cut to the chase. Thanks Kyle Ellison!More on why

it's hard to call Them Crooked Vultures anything other than a supergroup (the line-up features ex- Nirvana and Foo Fighters leader Dave Grohl , Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones , and Josh Homme of Q ueens of the Stone Age ). to be honest, we must say that the trio gel in a way most supergroups don't, it all crunches vigorously along, and the kind of irredeemable character who talks approvingly about a guitarist's "licks" will love it. it's more that it's superfluous: it doesn't make you long [...]

Here's what my encyclopedia says:- Formed in Glasgow in 1991 as Dove by Applied Biochemisttry student/graduate Dorothy 'Dot' Allison, along with Ian Carmichael and former Altered Images man Jim McKinven. Initailly released on the local Soma imprint, the dreamy ambience of 'Fallen' was subsequently remixed and re-issued by the 'Boys Own' label, an operation partly run by DJ extraordinaire, Andrew Weatherall. The band's association with Weatherall helped create a buzz that peaked with the release of 'White Love' (recorded with the help of Jah Wobble and Primal Scream's Andrew Innes amongst others), [...]

It's been requested that my blog posts for WFMU, from this moment on, pertain specifically to music. It was a lot of fun sharing weird off-beat stories with you, but I guess now is the time to get serious and write about things other than softball, beer, and American concentration camps. Here goes nothin' ... Usually when I find CD-rs out in the world, they've been tossed out of car windows or left on the [...]

Words: Jodi Root | Photo: Clayton Huack Maps and Atlases served as the perfect bait to lure me to my most (and quite frankly, only) anticipated field trip into Chicago's Lincoln Park – the city's newest venue, Lincoln Hall . While Maps & Atlases put on an incredible, entertaining set– thanks to Muzzle of Bees contributing Champaign writer Jon Stone, we already knew that . Instead of repeating his previous praise, I'd like instead to focus on the highlights (and there are many) [...]

Los Angeles' Le Face have a cool Warsaw meets Wire post-punk thing going on. This track in particular, from their 1st LP Isolation has been on repeat a bunch this week. Kind of a lesser known band out of the same Smell scene that brought you No Age and Mika Miko, but maybe not for long? Le Face - Manic Depression Download audio file (Manic_Depression.mp3)
Linn have announced that they're ceasing production of CD players : Gilad Tiefenbrun, managing director of Linn Products, said: "Our customers have fast recognised the limitations of CD players and in the age of home networking, people now want better control of their music and the ability to enjoy it in any room of their home. "CD players no longer belong in the specialist domain." To be honest, I suspect hi-fi heads have been looking for an excuse to drop the format ever since you started to be able to buy CD players [...]
