It's weird to recommend going to The Studio at Webster Hall on BOTH nights of the weekend, but This Is Ivy League might just be worth it. Considering Ivy League members Ryland Blackinton and Alex Suarez are also both in Cobra Starship , there's a possibility for a number of younger fans. Prepare yourself for that. The Weight @ [...]

We've been a little slow on the site lately thanks to my new full-time job out here in the Bay, but that isn't stopping us from welcoming friends to the site to start dropping some contributions in their own way. First up is our long-time friend, Ross McKillop, a recent New York City transplant from Vancouver. Hi, my name is Ross, and I'm a live music addict. So this is my first post on the Live Music Blog. I'd like to thank Justin for giving me the platform to bather on about [...]
It's undeniable: the highlights of the year are always good for a nice, bust-out-the-smiles kind of story. But really, you wouldn't be into popular music if you didn't have a distinct sense of morbidity and cynicism. And you couldn't be a morbid cynic if you weren't at least a little fascinated by the mire into which the year in music, on more that one occasion, has sunk. With that in mind, Melophobe offers you the totally subjective, probably biased, quite certainly non–peer reviewed, Top 10 Lowlights of the Year in Music . And while we did sort of rank [...]

Kingblind's Top 15 Albums of 2009 2009 has been a fantastic year for music. It took us quite a while to come up with a Top 15 that we could all agree upon. But alas, here it is. From old favorites to new kids on the block (No, that that new kids!) We proudly present. The top 15 albums of 2009.. and away we go! 15) Built to Spill: There is no Enemy Three years after the release of its last album, "You in Reverse," Built [...]

Kristin, can I just say something for a minute? Why did you have to grow up to be such a bitch? You totally carried Laguna Beach for two seasons with your mildly innocent scheming and comparatively unspoiled persona. Your drama was real(ish) and your heart was true. Then came college. Remember when Stephen moved to San Fran and you guys would get together sometimes for those awkward, staged reunions? Those were the days. I had high hopes for you— both of you! Stephen even left SoCal. You two [...]

Recommended Show: SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2009 DAMON AND NAOMI @ SOUND FIX RECORDS 44 Berry Street Brooklyn, NY 11211 FREE, 2PM Though there are an amazing number of live shows going on tonight in the City (Trail of Dead at the Music Hall of Williamburg, Mick Barr at Union Pool, Alexis Gideon at Death by Audio, and so on), the opening of Sound Fix's new location is definitely the place to be. Damon and Naomi play the opening event at 2PM this afternoon. Miike [...]

Few bands morph from synth pop to what a friend of mine calls "devil music." He's clueless of course, but Industrial music does have it's detractors. When Ministry released With Sympathy on Arista Records in 1983 I thought it was great. It was so 80's, but it was also very cool. I know frontman Al Jourgensen tries to distance himself from this record, but it's a still a great record. They say Arista took artistic control of the release, much to the chagrin of Jourgensen, but for him to refer to it as "an abortion of an album" is being [...]

Recommended Show: SUNDAY, APRIL 25, 2009 ONEIDA @ MONSTER ISLAND 128 River Street Brooklyn, NY 11211 I'll be honest. I don't know what time this show starts nor do I know how much it costs. Other NYC shows tonight are posted below... Travis @ Webster Hall Lemonade @ Bruar Falls Box Elders @ Cake Shop Jeremy Jay @ Silent Barn Julie [...]

We sent WW's Mark Stock to the desert. What follows is part one of his three-part series on this year's Coachella festival. Three days in Indio, California become one long day in the desert when it's 100 degrees. You begin to imagine your limbs are long enough to reach Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and rip the just-opened water bottle from her gloved hand. Coachella, now in its tenth year, is built on flashes. Like a reel of film, the three days are devoted to many, many, many single frames [...]
The Airborne Toxic Event seem to be a buzz word on every one's lips over here in the UK at the moment. Who else but Rock Sellout would grab an opening tour night interview? I caught up with Mikel, Daren and Noah from the band pre-show at Norwich Art Centre. We chatted about the LA scene and that Pitchfork review amongst other things. I left the interview mightily impressed with the warmth shown to us. There was no rock star pretense or clock watching by the tour manager (thanks Stacie). In fact, the interview ran for a good 25 [...]

Everyone can relax. Kevin Barnes has gotten over the break-up and is doing much better this time around. After the high drama and catharsis of last year's epically dark Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? , Barnes and the rest of Of Montreal have dusted themselves off and returned to the celebratory psych-pop days of old with the anything but Skeletal Lamping . Contrary to its qualifier, Lamping is huge, busting at the seams with ideas, style shifts, and sexed-up enthusiasm. Barnes would appear to have reached the epiphany that the best [...]
