If your not into a night with these two singer-songwriters, than maybe you'll be interested in hitting one of these recently announced [...]

photo by Dena Flows We recently mentioned that members of the North Mississippi Allstars were reuniting with John Medeski and Robert Randolph as "The Word" for a few rare shows this December. Well it looks like the North Mississippi Allstars have put together a more complete tour schedule, with dates before and after the Word reunion in December and in early 2010. The tour includes key cities throughout the U.S. as well as Jam Cruise , but it sounds like they plan to add even more dates soon. [...]

I think it would be only fair to describe this podcast as a little bit messy. We recorded it immediately after first Craigcast two weeks ago, and so by the end of it we were all fucking hammered. I promise I have tried to edit out as much of the madness as I could, but it was difficult. The problem with incoherent drunken rambling is there don't tend to be a lot of natural breaks, so it was devilishly hard to cut down. Anyhow, this won't be the first or last time you listen [...]

Star & Micey are a Memphis band that sound like vintage folk soul group of the early Seventies. Geoff Smith had written a song about his ex (called Micey), ran into Joshua Cosby and the seeds for a band were sown. They became a trio after enlisting Nick Redmond on lead guitar. Their self-titled debut is a sad record that sounds cheerful. They laid down the tracks at Ardent Studios, a facility renowned for great recordings by Isaac Hayes, The White Stripes and Led Zeppelin. Inviting a host of guests [...]

It's not very often Shane or myself really wants to give anyone else the chance to talk - especially about music on our own blog - but after the countless hours of work required to get the Mississippi Sheiks tribute record out the door, Steve Dawson has earned a few moments of your time. Plus, with such an amazing collection of artists talking about music that influences them, well, it's better to get the goods right from the horse's mouth. So here is Steve's own two cents on a project that means more to him than [...]
Chris and Rich Robinson formed the Black Crowes in 1984. There are have been a lot of highs and some lows on their records over the years, but they have always remained a hugely successful live act. One of the big reasons for this is their ability to mix in great covers into their sets. Here are a few of their best that have been captured on video over the years. A fun video (with some hilarious crowd shots) of the Crowes covering Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Woman #12 & 35" at the 1991 Monsters of Rock [...]
By: David SchultzBefore he became known as the father of North Mississippi Allstars' Luther and Cody Dickinson, Jim Dickinson was one of the industry's most respected producers and studio musicians. You can hear him on a slew of albums recorded at Atlantic Records in the late Sixties/early Seventies and that's his piano on The Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses." Last month, Dickinson passed away after
![The Black Crowes – Before The Frost… [Album Review]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2000814_lg.jpg)
The Black Crowes released "I Ain't Hiding" as a free download a few weeks back and, as a result, my expectations for Before The Frost… lied somewhere between zero and negative three on a scale of one to ten. I reserved my opinions on the track when we posted it, but it's a disco tune that falls flat on its ass. Well I've got great news. That track is not representative of what is otherwise very good album from one of America's greatest rock n' roll bands. For the band's eighth studio album, they gathered some [...]
![[GUEST POST] ROCK REPORT: DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS @ THE HOUSE OF BLUES IN MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/1944591_lg.jpg)
Autopsy IV: This post comes from a long time ninebullets.net reader, Adam Fenwick . It's nice to see a review of the Truckers. It's been so long since they've come to the Tampa Bay area I've almost forgotten what THE ROCK SHOW is like. Hope y'all enjoy. It had been more than a year since I last saw the best damn band on the planet, the Drive-By Truckers , live in concert, which is far too long. So, when my brothers girlfriend [...]

Famed musician/producer Jim Dickinson died on Saturday at the age of 67. According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal , the Memphis native and longtime Mississippi resident had been in failing health for the past few months and was recuperating from heart surgery at Methodist Extended Care Hospital. One of the pioneers who helped define the Memphis sound—a mixture of rock, country, R&B and soul—and the father of Luther and Cody Dickinson, two-thirds of the Grammy-nominated North Mississippi Allstars, Dickinson's career highlights are numerous and span over four decades: he recorded the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses" [...]
"During the course of his colorful half-century career, Jim Dickinson built a worldwide reputation as a session player for the likes of Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones, a producer for influential groups including Big Star and The Replacements, a sometime solo artist and the patriarch of a small musical dynasty through his sons, Cody and Luther Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars. Just last weekend, a tribute concert headlined by singer-songwriter John Hiatt and featuring a host of Memphis musicians was held at The Peabody Skyway to help defray Dickinson's [...]

As I was finishing yesterday's Replacements post, a blip came over my Twitter feed that Jim Dickinson had passed away. I thought, "no that can't be the same Jim Dickinson that I just wrote about." But unfortunately, it was. Here is the Associated Press article on Dickinson's life via Yahoo news . Memphis producer, musician Jim Dickinson dies By CHRIS TALBOTT, Associated Press Writer [...]
The music world lost another great one. Legendary musician and producer Jim Dickinson died Saturday at age 67. Dickinson worked with Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones and Aretha Franklin. He also produced Big Star's seminal album "Third" and the Replacements' "Pleased to Meet Me." His sons also made their mark: Luther and Cody are two-thirds of the band North Mississippi Allstars . In the video below, Dickinson talks about working with Alex Chilton . Known for creating the Memphis sound in the '60 and '70s, Dickinson is the [...]

Dickinson, who died way too young on Friday, is one of the great unsung heroes of American music over the last couple of decades, a guy who moved effortlessly between blues, soul, rock, and even punk -- piano player on The Rolling Stones ' "Wild Horses," producer of The Replacements ' essential Pleased to Meet Me , and father of Cody and Luther , whose North Mississippi Allstars are hands down the best young modern blues rock band on the planet. But the thing I'll remember him most fondly [...]

Jim Dickinson, a musician and producer who helped shape the Memphis sound in a career that spanned more than four decades, died Saturday. He was 67. His wife, Mary Lindsay Dickinson, said he died in a Memphis, Tennessee, hospital after three months of heart and intestinal bleeding problems. The couple lived in Hernando, Mississippi, but Dickinson recently had bypass surgery and was undergoing rehabilitation at Methodist University Hospital, his wife said. Dickinson, perhaps best known as the father of Luther and Cody Dickinson, two-thirds of the Grammy-nominated [...]
