The xx + jj = whoa. This is not an algebra problem, though it may solve the puzzle of who jj is. The mysterious Swedish group, who have never revealed their identities, are making their U.S. debut this fall with another electronic band of the moment, the xx. Will they play behind a curtain? A U.K.-based electro group, the xx are making many Best of 2009 lists with their self-titled debut, and are touring with Friendly Fires this year and Hot Chip next April. The [...]

Check out " Norway ," the first single to find it's way to the internet off Beach House 's upcoming 2010 release. It's a lovely and haunting song with a stylistically warped beat written by Victoria and Alex on a train ride through the mountains; shot for Norwegian TV at a train station in Oslo. I haven't had a chance to review the full album yet, but people are telling me that Teen Dream is their best and most consistent record yet. Set for release January 26th. [...]

by BBG On Sunday at Le Poisson Rouge, Shrinebuilder played an overwhelming show -- almost meditatively focused, one whose afterimage is likely to stay with those who saw it. It's a band of willful musicians in their 40s from around the country who have given their adult lives to slow-and-heavy music: Scott Kelly of Neurosis, Scott Weinrich of the Obsessed and Saint Vitus, Al Cisneros of Om and Dale Crover of the Melvins. Shrinebuilder is as loosely based in doom-metal as Krallice is in black-metal: it [...]
Contrast Podcast recently asked music bloggers like myself to submit our favorite 50 songs of the year for their annual "Festive 503 podcast. Our selections were then compiled into a shortlist and now we've been asked to recruit votes to narrow it down. For the curious, I've bolded the 10 songs I personally voted for. I really, really want "Nice Very Nice" by Kurt Vonnegut & Dave Soldier (from their album Ice-9 Ballads ) to make the final list. Not only because it's my favorite song of the year, from my favorite album of the year, [...]

Matter of Time mp3 The Leisure Society The Sleeper ..... ..... buy it Well, now this is getting interesting... Over at the Contrast Podcast , Tim's solicited everyone for their favorite 50 songs of 2009, remember? From all the responses he's compiled the top 155. I'm very impressed with the list! If you didn't submit your faves yet, you've still got a chance to get in the game at this point! Help us out, eh? (I"ve highlighted my top 10 in blue) Here's [...]

In 2004, Annie—Bergen, Norway's sunniest export—scored both club hits and indie cred with her debut album Anniemal . Her sophomore LP Don't Stop was initially announced in early 2008, but got tangled up, as she explains it, in a nasty case of record label drama. "I kept on delivering things but it was never enough," says the singer. Fast forward a year-and-a-half later, and Don't Stop has finally arrived on these shores, thanks to Oslo-based label Smalltown Supersound. Idolator met up with 31-year-old Annie (real name: Anne Lilia Berge Strand) in Los Angeles [...]
Norwegian pop-black-metal-punks Lydia Laska report that their new album is done and mixed and confirmed for a March 2010 release. I'm not sure if it has a title, but they did say that many fellow Oslo-based artists make guest appearances on said album including Nattefrost ( Carpathian Forest ), Emil Nikolaisen and Eivind Schou ( Serena-Maneesh ), Kjetil Møster ( Datarock ), Sissy Wish and quite a few others. We've been in love with this song -- which Beach House penned on a train trip through the Norwegian mountains -- since we heard Victoria + Alex play a stripped-down version in an Oslo train station back in '08, and our love grew exponentially when we saw them play a stunning, more uptempo version of the song a handful of times at SXSW earlier this year. And yet, we still weren't quite prepared... click through for more...

There are certain bands that I associate with HearYa more than others. Bands like Ha Ha Tonka, Other Lives and Joe Pug are a few that blend great musicianship with amiable personalities. Port O'Brien is another of those bands and over the course of three albums and countless shows , Port O'Brien has never ceased to amaze us. It has been a treat to watch them evolve since Oz recommended them a couple of years back. I showed up a little late to the session and the first thing I noticed was a slight lineup [...]
