Wire formed in London, England in 1976, the group consisted of Watford Art College students. Collin Newman was on vocals/guitar, Bruce Gilbert on guitar, Graham Lewis on bass/vocals and Robert Gotobed on drums. Influenced by the emerging UK Punk scene at the time, Wire began playing live shows and gained the interest of Mike Thorne, who was a producer that had connections with EMI Records. Thorne, who was recording local Punk acts at The Roxy for a live compilation album, recorded Wire and included two of their songs on the compilation (titled Live At The Roxy ). Shortly after [...]

Penny, pointing the way as usual ... Lee Hazlewood / Nancy Sinatra - "Some Velvet Morning" I realized the other day that I've written scant little about being a dad and all that. I guess I always figured those blogs are boring as SHIT. I don't read any of those blogs, is what I mean, and so I wouldn't expect that anyone else would want to read anything I'D have to [...]
Soft Pack, formerly the Muslims, have an easy to spot reverence for the pop and garage rock of the 1960s, so its no surprise at all that the video for "C'mon" would position the band as the object of devotion for screaming teenage girls. Granted, the girls are via archival footage and are probably not screaming for Soft Pack (unless, of course, the women could see into the future), but if they keep it up with more single like this, it might not be long before Soft Pack get their own screaming girls peering through fences. [...]

Filed under: News The White Stripes are not happy with Uncle Sam this week. The object of their displeasure? An ad campaign for the United States' Air Force Reserve that launched during Sunday's Super Bowl broadcast. The 30-second advertisement uses what sounds like an instrumental re-recording of the White Stripes' famous hit, "Fell in Love With a Girl," set against video footage of extreme sports. "The White Stripes take strong insult and objection to the Air Force Reserve presenting this advertisement with the implication that we licensed one of [...]

Angles of Disorder by Zachary C. Bush (BlazeVOX, July, 2009) "There are children trapped inside my face!" I have had this collection/novel by Zachary C. Bush on my desk for awhile, and it took me some time to figure out why I hadn't picked it up and read it. I think it was the word disorder that keep me from cracking the cover. The distance between order and disorder is extremely slim, and one I feel closing in on me often. Yet, I recently cracked the cover and beneath it found a world chaos [...]

I first heard Franklin Bruno when I picked up an album from his band Nothing Painted Blue (ØPB). I'm not sure what led me to the purchase; perhaps a good review in a fanzine or simply the visual appeal of the album cover, but it was a fortuitous purchase. A Baby, A Blanket, a Packet of Seeds started what has been a 20-year streak of dependably outstanding releases. My look back was precipitated by Bruno's own. He just released a collection of his solo odds and ends from 1992-98, dubbed [...]

Things rolled off to a big-team kick start as Tempz and the rest of Slew Dem Crew arrived at the BBC studios for a 10 track session. This was the shattered remains from the entire recordings - everything laid down was so offensive and intense all that was suitable for broadcast was a Next Hype barking rewind that is pure hilarious. We can't wait to see the next pirate [...]

Another day, another list, and before you know it, it's already February. The obligatory chocolate giving holiday is just a couple of days away and everyone is seeing hearts. For our Friday's list, what better way to welcome Valentine's than to showcase some songs by people who've taken the term 'let's make beautiful music together' - literally and figuratively. Here now, is my list of songs from indie music duos who share a partnership that's more than musical - 1. Viva Voce - Mixtape=Love [...]

Scary : "Under an agreement that is still being finalized, the National Security Agency would help Google analyze a major corporate espionage attack that the firm said originated in China and targeted its computer networks, according to cybersecurity experts familiar with the matter. The objective is to better defend Google - and its users - from future attack." Sure, the object is to defend Google from cyberattacks. But how comfortable do you feel with the notion that the NSA (hello digital aged wiretapping!) is in cahoots with the one company that has more stored private information than any other. [...]

Columbia Pictures is moving forward with The Lost Symbol, the third installment of the Da Vinci Code franchise. Steven Knight has come on board to adapt Dan Brown's novel. The book is described as follows: The Lost Symbol is a masterstroke of storytelling-a deadly race through a real-world labyrinth of codes, secrets, and unseen truths... all under the watchful eye of Brown's most terrifying villain to date. Set within the hidden chambers, tunnels, and temples of Washington, D.C., The Lost Symbol accelerates through a startling landscape toward an unthinkable finale. As the story opens, Harvard [...]
Good morning! While we're pretty sure Katy Perry is no doubt livid with jealousy over this set of photos between her fiance and budding musician Jason Segel, all we're picturing is a very homoerotic Forgetting Sarah Marshall sequel. Which would be awesome. Til that epic comedy comes to a theatre near you, let's mix it up: Did You Hear? :: Lil Wayne tells Rolling Stone he's "looking forward" to spending a year in jail. To paraphrase a quote from [...]

Magical Radiophonic Heart. Banda de Turistas Nacional Records, Argentina Rating: 79 By Jean-Stephane Beriot Argentina's new most hyped band had never been (properly) reviewed by Club Fonograma, now, that's a surprise. I base myself between the states and Buenos Aires, so I've been obviously exposed to all the justifiable attention the band has come to receive, [...]

This review was originally published by Foxy Digitalis . [Daddytapes; 2009] Jack Callahan is a percussive sound-explorer who currently calls Amherst, MA home. Having spent two years there, I know it's an interesting, cozy, and snowy community filled with people making strange sounds and studying funky academic disciplines that have little to no value within a world driven by death and capital. The Pioneer Valley is a safe haven for crazies and a place that healthily nurtures bold artistic spirits. These two sides show Callahan, [...]

To reiterate a common cliché; the fear with a sophomore release is always the expectations listeners have built-up from the first album. This is especially problematic for the instantly-adored indie sensations, the Bloc Partys and the MSTRKRFTs of the world. For these bands future releases often fall flat just by virtue of the success of the debut. This however is not the case with the second full-length from Toronto-based, dance-rockers Woodhands. The duo's debut Heart Attack was not an album that garnered much immediate attention from myself or that internet echo-chamber of the blogosphere. It was [...]
