![CD Review: Daniel, Fred & Julie [You've Changed Records, 2009]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2134523_lg.jpg)
What's the deal with collaborations? In recent months there has been Mosters Of Folk , NOVELS and now Daniel, Fred & Julie . This most recent addition includes some heavy hitters from the east coast. The Daniel part is Daniel Romano who sings and plays guitar in Attack in Black . Fred is Fred Squire who sang and played guitar in legendary indie-rock group Shotgun and Jaybird, and the Julie is none other than Julie Doiron, as in the legendary songwriter, singer, guitar shredder and member of Eric's Trip. [...]
Today's song is another gorgeous effort from Toronto's The Rural Alberta Advantage . In the Summertime is the closing track from the indie-rock trio's debut full-length album Hometowns , independently released in early 2008 and then re-released on July 7th of this year following the band's signing with Saddle Creek Records . I know I've mentioned it before, but I just can't get over how much Nils Edenlof sounds like Jeff Mangum when he throws himself into a lyric. If there are any readers from Ontario/Quebec reading this post, The Rural Alberta advantage [...]

As we make our way through fall out here in Halifax, things are finally getting back to business, or rather posting, as usual. The Polaris is over, HPX is over, and so we're back to bringing you that sweet, sweet can-con, errrr, content. And because it's Thursday, that means one thing, Videos! As you might imagine since we haven't run an episode of Video Hits in a while, we've got quite a backlog of them. So if you've sent us a vid in the last few weeks, our apologies, but perhaps send us [...]
Has any music loving Haligonian actually recovered from another amazing HPX? '09 brought in an embarrassment of National and International talent but the rocking just doesn't stop here in Canada's ocean playground. In the next 10 days, we have some absolutely stellar acts playing shows and the hill wouldn't be doing it's duty if we didn't talk about the bands still willing to make the extra 12-hour trek from Montreal. The Sunparlour Players are probably one of the best live acts in Canada. That statement is said so [...]
Filed under: Video of the Day Artist: Octoberman Video: 'Thirty Reasons' Highlight: The group's lovesick frontman makes his plea in front of a one-woman audience.
Last night was another recovery evening for me (what can I say, I'm old and 30 Rock was calling), so I didn't get a chance to check out any bands, but tonight I'll be back at 'er like a college kid after a few rounds of beer pong. Here's what's on my radar for this CMJ Friday ( Oct 23 ): The Uglysuit - Rockwood Music Hall Holly Miranda - LPR Daptone Records Showcase - Knitting Factory Calypso - Bowery Electric Cymbals [...]
Today's song is another from the Toronto, Ontario indie-rock band Octoberman; on a side-note, Octoberman is tied with Green Go for my favorite music discovery of the year. The Backlash can be found on the band's third full-length release "Fortresses", which was released in Canada on September 1st of this year and in the US on October 1st. The band is currently on a Canadian tour, which can be followed via their tour blog on Exclaim! 's website here . [...]

Check out this list of all 41 Canadian artists at CMJ this year: Download the "2009 CMJ Canadian Artist Sampler" over here . Here's who I'd put on my must see list: Beast - According to Bill, these Montrealers. I like what I've heard on record. Black Diamond Bay - I've been a long time fan of BDB's self titled debute and Patrick Krief always brings his best "O" face to the stage. Elliot Brood [...]

Warpaint Here's our guide for next week's CMJ Festival in New York. from Awkward Family Photos Canadian Thanksgiving this weekend, which means a couple things. Most likely, I'll eat too much and regret the entire holiday. Also, I'll probably be working for a good part of the weekend. Seems to happen the same way every year. But, its a good time to hang out with family, relax and enjoy fall weather. Bust out some sweaters. Or more likely bust out of some sweaters. Before the weekend though, I'm thinking you might want to know about: -Good news, this is [...]

[ download ] This past Tuesday, Marc Morrissette and his partners in Octoberman released their third full-length record, Fortresses , on White Whale Records . Installment number three finds Morrissette moving even further away from the project's roots bare bones roots toward a more fully fleshed out, full band vision while still retaining the spirit of the troubadour that defined Octoberman's first recordings. Its quiet passages are never boring, and there is an immediate familiarity to most of the songs on the twelve track set. "Trapped in the [...]
CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]

The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]

After quite a long absence, the Graboid is back and this time around with a proper title. As much as I liked the original 'The Daily Graboid' title, in the grand scheme of things it just never really made much sense considering it had always been a weekly post. I've always meant to have the change eventually, but considering how long it's been since I've last put this up, it just felt right to start back anew with this different title. So with that being said, you can expect to see this every Tuesday since I [...]

Frank Yang You may have noticed that the Sunday Cleaning features I used to run on, well, Sundays have largely fallen by the wayside this year. In fact I've run a grand total of one in 2009. Shameful. Fact is, time has become more and more scarce and it just wasn't possible to put together reviews of even that length on top of the regular week of feature writing. But I continue to get stuff sent to me, both physically and digitally, that I want to at least put out there in [...]
