Warpaint also makes nice in the museum's Hall of Mammals. ... Dave Davies plays the El Rey Theatre, with the rock trio that [...]

Overlooked in Ohio: Vol. 3 (Greenhorn)

Overlooked in Ohio: Vol. 3 (Greenhorn) Editor's note: "Overlooked in Ohio" is a feature in which we ask an Ohio-based artist/music enthusiast to tell us about a few bands (past or present) from the state of Ohio that deserve some love. Our second installment comes courtesy of Bela Koe-Krompecher , a staple of the Columbus rock scene and head of the soon-to-be-revived Anyway Records - former home of Gaunt, The New Bomb Turks and countless other "important" Columbus bands, including this volume's subject, Greenhorn . ...This is a long one, but do yourself a big favor and read the whole [...]

SOMEBODY'S DARLING-Somebody's Darling

SOMEBODY'S DARLING-Somebody's Darling I'm enjoying the self-titled debut of Amber Farris' band, "Somebody's Darling." It's kind of like Lucero or Old '97s fronted by a woman with a powerful set of lungs. Rock and roll/country, straight-ahead four-person rock and roll on Shiner Records / PaloDuro Records. In fact, it's hard to write much about them, because the music is so up front and pure. It makes you want to grab a brew, sit at a bar, and stare at the chicks who will definitely dig the band. That's the best thing about alt-country sung by a [...]

Help Haiti… by attending a concert!

In the days and weeks ahead, several of our favorite artists and bands will lend their time and talents in hopes of helping the victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti. Names like Amy Millan, Patti Smith, Yo La Tengo, Ted Leo, The Swell Season, Rosanne Cash, and the Cold War Kids are among the many who are set to appear at Haiti benefit concerts across the country. It only seems appropriate that we take a moment to not only note these events, but put together a simple guide for your viewing pleasure. Awesome music + an amazing cause = [...]

Rhett Miller

Rhett Miller Hang on a minute, what's this? Something new on lonesome? Why, yes, newish and very fine indeed. Rhett Miller (of Old 97s semi-fame) released an eponymous album last year that very nearly passed me by, so I'm pleased to have caught up with this. [Likewise, I nearly missed the Sara Hawkins one - more on that in another post]. It's a cracking album, with unexpected twists and turns and very good company indeed. The Guest's Best: Albums, Tracks and More!

What does it say that I don't have a top ten albums list, but can only can pick a few that I'm certain really deserve that to be on A list? I don't think it's about quality –I consistently get annoyed by folks that say there's no good music out there. But, technology has changed my listening habits – lots of playlisting and shuffling going on. And I'm more honest now than I was before and less concerned about scoring hipster points. I never really listened much to the Fugazi, Matthew Dear or Youssou N'Dour records that I put in [...]

Coverville Countdown 2009: Voting is now closed! I've closed the voting for the Coverville Countdown 2009, and I'm tabulating the results right now. And as promised, following the break, see the entire list of nominees: Here is the full list of nominees (minus the songs inducted into the Coverville Hall Of Fame ) '19992 - Red Dirt Rangers [orig. Old 97's: The early years

Old 97's: The early years Remember alt-country? The Uncle Tupelos , The Jayhawks , the Whiskeytowns and Old 97's that were going to take over the world the way grunge bands did only a few years before? While the genre never quite took off the way record labels had probably hoped, some of the bands did all right for themselves ... or at least spawned bands that would go on to make some pretty decent twangified noise. From the ashes of Uncle Tupelo came Wilco . Ryan Adams left Whiskeytown to become the much-loved/hated, [...]
