Firstly well done to Shaun & Rocky for getting the Bell X1 support Irish Tour slot this winter. I urge you to get to the shows early to catch the Oppenheimer lads do their thing. If you haven't heard of them before check out; http://www.myspace.com/oppenhe imer Also if you are in a band and want in turn to support Oppenheimer in Belfast then here's what to do!
Total Slacker are a band out of Sante Fe by way of Brooklyn sportin' the classy Tucker Rountree on guitar, the sassy Emily Oppenheimer on bass and the mondo rad Condor on drums...I'm not too swell at rhymes these days, forgive me Ross. Turning up the reverb until you can't tell if the banter between songs is still the last tune, the 'slacks are writing uber catchy melodies and the occasional true story about video store rental bros, pandas and basically being way chill. After only a handful of shows under their belts I'm proud to say that our [...]
Boys Noize , aka Alex Ridha, certainly isn't endearing himself to those of us tasked with reviewing his latest effort. Listening to the advance version of Power is an altogether frustrating experience; each track is peppered with digitised voices reminding the listener that what they're hearing is a promo copy and that it's "good stuff." The tactic may dissuade piracy but it's also a nuisance that makes it mightily difficult for anyone with honorable intentions not to give up and smash the CD against a wall. But luckily for you, dear reader, State is made of sterner stuff. [...]

Clare and the Reasons are terrifyingly cute. They could destroy all worlds of lesser cuteness, blasting apart their molecules like Oppenheimer, and the band displayed this menace instantly via th... Continue reading "CMJ: Clare and the Reasons Provide the Twee Quotient at Mercury Lounge" >

While listening to Russian Circles' latest album, Geneva (out today on Suicide Squeeze ), I couldn't help but see some parallels between it and my current vodka of choice, Svedka . Its super distilled, has a clean, crisp taste and a smooth, confident finish. It does all this without the fuss, hype and expense of so many other 'premium' bottles (see: Grey Goose , Pelican ). And, like Svedka, I know I'll be coming back to this album again and again when in the mood for this kinda fix. [...]

In Mother Russia, beard grows you!!! We were lucky enough to nab an interview with Brian Cook, bassist / noisist extraordinaire for Russian Circles , and he provides some interesting insights into thier latest release, Geneva . Geneva is a definite progression for Russian Circles. All the signature elements are there, only more concentrated, more developed. Was that a conscious effort for the three of you? What are your thoughts on the creative process resulting in this album? We definitely [...]
You know the "goth sway", don't you? Head down, sunken shoulders, knees together and the invisible hoola hoop pelvic twirl. Something like this: I'm guessing the ol' pop'n'lock doesn't really fit into the routine. Oh you Goths! Gotta love white people that are even whiter than white people. The powder makeup helps, but the dancing clinches it. This song has that perfect synthpop beat to practice your sway in the mirror. Just remember, the more apathetic the better. The shutter comes down on mp3hugger for 24 hours as another weekend of international football is upon us. This time Ireland face the Italians who only need a point to qualify, a win for us would have them sweating a little in the last round of games next Wednesday (Cyprus you owe us dear). Croker will be full as will most of the supporters given that today is Saturday, kick off is not until 8pm and there is a German beer festival in full swing in the city centre. Fitting then that a random search for football phraseology threw up [...]
Having been off the scene for a while, Oppenheimer return to the Dublin fray this week with a support slot with the fantastic Frank Turner at the Academy 2 on Tuesday night. The other support will be one man guitar dymano Beans On Toast . Tickets are priced €13.50 including booking fee.

The tune of the Irish singer-songwriter has been well and tritely versed, and strummed out on Glen Hansard's knackered acoustic guitar with a hole in the body and minus a string. Yet, can Jon Hughes manage to deliver an album worthy of counting him amongst the abundance of merits attributed to Galway (The Saw Doctors, proximity to the Aran Islands, a Filipino restaurant), with his sophomore effort Voices From A Broken Window ? According to his biography, "Hughes' voice has been compared to Cat Stevens and Nils Lofgren of the E Street Band", yet on first [...]
So the pint of plain is 250 years old next week. We normally don't need much of a reason to enjoy craic agus ceol but next Thursday should be a good night! There are four big gigs in the main venues of Vicar Street, Whelans, Tri-pod and The Academy. Here's the line-ups: Calvin Harris Black Swan Effect The Blizzards David Gray The Enemy Hot Rats Imelda May Jamie Cullum The Kooks Lisa Hannigan Mongrel Noah and the Whale Paolo Nutini Razorlight Republic of Loose Reverend and the Makers Richard Hawley Sugababes Soul II [...]
Monday: Bela Fleck + Toumani Diabate @ Central Park Summerstage 8pm FREE There was a time when being a fan of "world music" took a special breed of person, someone who was adventurous enough to shop in weird sections of their local record store and try things that weren't on the radio. Thanks to the internet that's no longer the case. Instead people all over the country are starting to realize that music doesn't just come from here and England, there's a lot of places with some awesome music. Tonight you get to see two of the [...]
Today is the birthday of Nikola Tesla (1856-1943), the renowned scientist primarily responsible for bringing us the glorious gift of electricity. His revolutionary ideas about the nature of electricity and magnetism led to the patent of several inventions, including alternating current, polyphase power distribution, and the Tesla coil . Tesla's influence, though somewhat overshadowed by his peer and friend/rival Thomas Edison, has stretched across the world, and helped to usher in a boom in technology in the early 20th century. Quite simply, the world wouldn't be the way it is today without Tesla's contributions, a fact even [...]

James Yuill, yes he of the never-sure-if-you've-spelled-i t-correctly last name and the supremely cheery, pastel sounds (and who doesn't want to hear music like that these days) is coming to Dublin's Academy 2 on June 25. Because we know there's some of you out there who would love nothing more than to swish into his concert for the pocket-friendly price of 'FREE', we have wrestled two pairs of tickets off the good man for his gig. Post your desire to go below (with an email address) and one of the State team will rise from their hangover stupor this [...]

Test # 1: The 2UIBestow Sessions begin tonight! 9pm Boyles, Slane. Great line-up, if you can make it that would be amazing. Test #2: Will our government survive the elecions on Friday! General Election on the horizon maybe? Test #3: The English Examinations mess is too funny. It shows the power of communication in our country. Text, amail and Twitter allowed the information to get from Co. Louth to every corner of the country before the government had any idea that there were problems! Oppenheimer: This Is Not A Test

If you are fan of one or maybe more of these bands (as I guess), have a stop at the daytrotter and get the 4 song sessions of them! Incredible concept, incredible acceptance, incredible songs...
