See the Austin-based band that The Onion calls "this year's hottest ticket" at Fun Fun Fun Fest next month. Listen & Re-Post! [MP3] The Laughing - "Runner": http://tinyurl.com/thelaughing -runner Recorded over the course of a near year, FEVER is the debut album by Austin band, The Laughing . With an aural aesthetic pulling from somewhere between early Roxy Music and the stretches of contemporaries such as Animal Collective , The Laughing [...]
Good stuff tomorrow night at local vegan restaurant, bar, and de facto freak flag flyin' headquarters The Swan Dive (which has a website now). Curstillistas , hailing from the Pine Tree State (that's Maine, ya'll), are a mysterious freak folk collective who amalgamate soaring, sunny rhythms with totally schizophrenic instrumentation. Freak folk, yes, but there's also a visceral accessibility and pulsating, aquatic vibe that makes you feels comfortable while it secretly slips LSD in your earl grey. These dudes are enlightened. They're on MySpazz , of course, so go see 'bout them. Recommended [...]
Whether you want to admit it or not New Jersey bands tend to fit a particular sound for the most part, luckily The Black Hollies give the Garden State some diversity when it comes to rock n' roll. The Jersey City quaret have just released their 3rd LP Softly Towards the Light , out on Ernest Jenning Recordings and is already picking up steam. Justin Angelo Morey, singer and bassist of The Black Hollies was nice enough to answer some questions for us regarding their new record, touring and the history of the group. [...]
I wish I had seen Os Mutantes on their latest North American tour, especially after The Dead Weather forced me to miss their set at Outside Lands this year. The Brazilian rockers selected a suitable opening act to compliment their foreign flare, enlisting DeLeon's mixture of old world comforts with indie rock modernity. However, DeLeon toned down their sound this tour which really highlights Dan Saks vocals and makes them sound better for it. Here is a clever tour video for "Almond Trees" shot in a bunch of unique cities [...]

On Thursday afternoon, I was out at Queens College, running through some of my music with the student bigband. This was fun but also unbelievably draining, and by the time I got home and dropped off the music folders, it was already getting kinda late -- but it was also Amanda's last night in town, so I quickly refueled and headed back out to meet her at Ace of Clubs for the French/Brazilia showcase. We both got there too late to catch any of the French groups, but the Brazilian rockers Sweet Fanny Adams [...]

Apparently Them Bird Things is a collaboration between two American songwriters that have been around for a bit, Steve Blodgett & Mike Brassard, and the Finnish singer Salla Day. I only caught a couple songs, but I'd say they were a bit like Stevie Nicks being backed by Os Mutantes. There was a very heavy [...]

Words and Pictures by John Bohannon Os Mutantes have carved out an odd niche for themselves in the current music world. The initial "wow" factor of the band's reunion is gone, and the trend-crazed fans have seemed to fall off a bit, leaving only the true disciples along for the ride. With very few exceptions the band's actual fans came out of the woodwork for their show at New York City's Webster Hall, and, let me tell you, this blew the...
Brazil's "Mutants" rock Austin with tropical beats. No Portuguese required!
Ever hear the cliche "I'm never washing this hand again" after someone shakes hand a celebrity or hot girl? Well, that's pretty much how I felt with regard to my ears after hearing Os Mutantes live. They were such a fantastic live show unlike any I've ever seen that the last thing I wanted to [...]
Not to give anything away, but Os Mutantes was the best show of Boomslang. Sorry Mission of Burma, but they took it from you at the last minute. This video is pretty good proof, but still only a fraction of the greatness. Still, it's fantastic and you should enjoy a samlnh of what we saw [...]

Date 10/18/09 Location La Zona Rosa Doors 8pm Tickets $27 from Gettix So how does a band take a break for close to 30 years and then make a comeback with a tour and brand new album? Who knows. I guess people really did like the 60s that much. If you're one of those 60s lovers, head down [...]
Boomslang ended up being kind of a long weekend. There was so much going on and so much great music that kept me out until ridiculous hours of the night, that I was downright exhausted on Sunday. I decided to take it easy for most of the day until the last band at Buster's which I was expecting (correctly) to be the highlight of the whole festival. That band is the irrepressible Brazilian band Os Mutantes . Originally formed in the mid-60s by the Baptista brothers (Arnaldo and Sergio Dias), [...]
Buster's was significantly less crowded for day 2 of Boomslang . While audiences packed the former warehouse the day before for Faust, Mission of Burma, and Atlas Sound , the crowd was comparably sparse on Saturday. While Disappears was setting up, I headed to the parking lot to check out the Boomslang Carnival. It was freezing outside, but apparently it didn't phase the Girlie Girl Burlesque dancers. While I was shivering in my sweater, a woman with hot pink hair and tattoos [...]

Last week I had the pleasure of catching legendary Tropicalia rockers Os Mutantes at Webster Hall in NYC. The Brazilian band has been around since the 1960's, with a reputation nearly as massive as their sound. Sometimes called 'The Brazilian Beatles', Os Mutantes ("The Mutants" in Portuguese) have released 11 studio albums, with countless other items included in a massive catalog, including rare compilations and hard-to-find EPs. Led by psychedelic shepherd (and only original member) Sergio Dias, the band ripped through a kaleidoscopic set replete with old favorites and some new material. In [...]

I found myself in the heart of horse country this weekend for Boomslang , the three-day experimental arts & musical festival in - of all places - Lexington, Kentucky. I've already expressed my bewilderment and (pleasant) surprise that the city is hosting a pretty monumental lineup of experimental rock bands, but let me revisit one more time. Mission of Burma , Faust, and Os Mutantes?! All three bands are legends in their own respect, and Os Mutantes is especially epic, considering the Brazilian psychedelic legends recently released their [...]

I have a confession to make. For years I would loudly proclaim my opinion that Lexington was vastly inferior to Louisville and that nobody in their right mind would ever want to live there. Now, my love for Louisville hasn't waned a bit (I still think it's the greatest town in America), but Lexington is quickly making a case for being one of the most exciting towns in the Midwest. With this year's Boomslang Fest courtesy of WRFL , they are [...]

Mixwit has been dead for some time now, and today I spent like 3 hours trying to make it work on my server - unfortunately, it was to no avail. Enter 8tracks.com. Mixes can only be 8 songs long, they play in random order, and don't look like tapes at all, but they'll serve the purpose until I find one as cool as mixwit was - anybody have any suggestions/know how to fix it??!?! Please lemme know! Anyway, here's a mix I've probably re-distributed 10 thousand times to 20 thousand people, but after spending 3 hours with the [...]
